I was an an OCD mood, & wondered how much a batch of your tea costs. Luzianne: Iced Specially Blended Decaffeinated Tea, 514 Oz $3.54+tax=$3.81 24 Bags / 3 per batch = 8 batches. $3.81 / 8 = $0.47625 per batch. C&H: Pure Cane Granulated White Sugar, 5 Lb $3.58+tax=$3.85 According to the Joy of Baking website... 1 pound = 2 1/4 cups, so 5 pounds = 11 1/4 cups $3.85 / 11.25 = $0.3422222222222222 per batch. Water 100 (cubic feet) = 748.051948 US gallons $1.4921 per CCF Tier 1 (Cost of CCF) / (Amount of Gallons in a CCF) = (Cost of a gallon of water) $1.4921 / 748.051948 = $0.001994647569583 12 Cups = 0.75 gallons (Cost of a gallon of water - 25% = (Cost of 12 cups of water) $0.0014959856771872 SO!! (Cost of Tea)+(Cost of Sugar)+(Cost of Water)=Cost of a pot of Sweet Tea. $0.47625 + $0.3422222222222222 + $0.0014959856771872 = $0.8199682078994094 Now divide that by 12 (Cups of water) = 0.0683306839916174 $.82 cents for a batch of Sweet Tea $.07 cents a cup! WOW! That kicks Coke & Pepsi's butt.. Check my math... Now should we go one and determine the cost of heating the water?? Me neither..

I tried substituting 9 regular tea bags for the 3 family sized tea bags. My tea came out tasting weak though. Then I decided to do some math: The regular sized tea bags are meant for 8 ounces of water. 8 ounces = 1 cup. This sweet tea recipie uses 12 cups of water total. So, I should have used at least 12 regular sized tea bags. But wait, there's more. I looked up the Lipton family size tea bags and according to Lipton, a single family size bag is enough to make 1 gallon of tea (128 oz of water). This sweet tea recipie uses 96 oz of water. She seems to be using enough tea bags to make 384 oz of tea. There are 2 possibilities: 1. At the time of this video, Lipton's family sized tea bags were set up for 32 oz of water and she is using the exact right amount of tea for 96 oz of water. In that case, I should use 12 regular size tea bags. 2. She's purposefully making the tea extra strong. In that case, I should use 48 regular tea bags. I'm going to start with 12 regular size tea bags and see if that tastes right. I can always work up slowly from there.

My mom would use two family size Lipton tea bags for a gallon. She would double boil the tea bags a quart at a time then boil another two quarts to dissolve a cup of sugar. She would also squeeze the teabags as well. She would boil the water in a one quart pan until she got a microwave and started using a one quart Pyrex measuring cup instead. It tastes the same either way. My way is almost the same except I double boil the teabags in a two quart Pyrex measuring cup. I like mine a bit stronger and sweeter so I use six of the family size bags or two of the large gallon size bags. I add two cups of sugar after the first boil and stir until it’s dissolved. After the second boil I have a gallon and I don’t squeeze the teabags because that gives your tea a bitter taste and it only gives you about a tablespoon of tea. I then add a pinch of baking soda and mix thoroughly by pouring from one Rubbermaid one gallon pitcher to another ten times. Then set it on the counter on a wire baking rack to cool before putting in refrigerator. I also wait about fifteen minutes before adding water to the second boil because I don’t want to risk shattering my Pyrex measuring cup. Even though it’s rated for high heat, they will still shatter after quickly going from one extreme to another as my mother found out years ago when her two quart Pyrex measuring cup shattered on her when she was making tea. I add a pinch of baking soda to a pot of coffee also and it tastes a lot better without the bitterness plus you can’t taste the baking soda at all.

Lemonade will be: boiling 2 cups of water with a cup of sugar til dissolved pour into a good sized pitcher or jar. Add as much lemon as you like then add cold water. I use fresh squeezed lemon, about 6 and slice one lemon thinly to drop into the pitcher. You might want it sweeter, but this is the start. I also use the bottled lemon juice to make lemonade. There is a brand at Costco that is good, Italian Volcano 100% organic lemon juice. It comes in a package of two 1L bottles. Hope you like this! Thank you for the comment!

You said it!!!!!!!! LIQUID GOLD - SOUTHERN WINE - DEEP SOUTH ELIXIR. . . . .Your recipe is the best. I heard from others that you should put a pinch of baking soda into the concentration to help ensure the tea isn't "cloudy". I do it but I can never tell ??? Who knows. But your recipe is the BEST!

that was the best iced tea I ever tasted! I almost always drink hot tea, never really liking cold tea, but one day, just had a craving for cold tea. So, I watched your video. And I was totally amazed. Your recipe is definitely going into my repertoire. Thanks again!

You are right about the tap water in some areas, thanks! The boiling should help the steeping water and then you could add the purified water to dilute instead of tap water. Thanks for the post!

I'm from Wisconsin and my mother's parents were from Arkansas. My grandma used to make sweet tea in a big aluminum pot with the small teabags. I remember how sweet and black it was and she'd pour it warm over ice cubes in our glasses. I grew up drinking sweet tea and my husband and daughter love it too. I always let my tea (regular) steep longer than five minutes though. I wonder if it really makes much difference. I just want it to be a strong as possible. Just made some today! Luzianne!

Thank you for sharing your tea recipe with us tea lovers. My tea turns out different every time...too weak...too strong...just off and then really good. I really need a recipe to follow ha ha. I think the tea that sets over night in the frig with the tea bags still in it is my favorite. When I rush the tea it is my worst.

Heather! Thanks! I plan to make more vids, but there are a lot of details that must be in place, such as exact measurements, exact baking times!!! I cannot post a fabulous recipe without the exact proportions. I make my food without a recipe. I have, many times, tried to exact the slaw and it is never up to par! I made my barbecue, cornbread, corn pudding, slaw and pound cake for the rehearsal dinner. Don't ask me how though! HA! That's one reason I LOVE the tea! It's precise! Maybe I could post my shortcake, hmmmmmmm. Food for thought!

A lot of other people don't use measurements either though (myself included)which is why video is so perfect because you can explain and show the reference points (enough to cover etc.). Maybe?

My grandmother in the 60's would make hers & pour into a large brown crock, metal ladle to pour with & a wet kitchen cloth to keep the flies out covering it. No shortage of sugar used. That old house still stands in South Fort Worth but I have no idea where the crock is.

Made it last night for the first time (Southern Thing videos made me want to try sweet tea). Not bad. I’d personally cut back on the sugar a little and maybe use four bags but I didn’t have any Lipton or the other brand because I generally drink Twinings. It’s super hot in Sydney today so I thought this would be a good day to try iced tea. Thanks for giving this noob some info on good iced tea. Curious though, after taking the pot off the heat how long do you recommend leaving the teabags in the hot water? I find tea tastes bitter after a while. Someone in another vid mentioned baking soda?
@SinceYallAsked
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this nice comment and the question! Only let the tea sit in the pot with the bags 5 minutes. JUST 5 Minutes! This is crucial. (The baking soda trick is lackluster and alters the taste considerably.) If you are using decaffeinated tea, then let it sit up to 30 minutes. I hope this helps! Have a good day!

I tried this recipe using Twinings Orange Pekoe, since we don't have Luzianne in Australia, and it still worked out excellent! Putting the sugar in before means that I don't have to heap it in later, and it turns out a lot more refreshing and not nearly as 'heavy'. Delicious!

Twinings is a super tea to use! (I don't promote Twinings in the video because it is pricey here, and doesn't come in family sized bags, but it is an excellent tea!) Thank you so much for the comment!

I have done some math and your sugar amount is right on. I have been paying close attention to different brands of sweet tea in the store. The best ones have about 16 grams of sugar per 8 oz of tea. or roughly 1 and 1/4 Tbs per 8oz ( 1 cup). You are slightly over that amount at 21grams per cup. I tend however to like my tea a little sweet. I also like how you pay attention to all of the little details that make sweet tea the best drink on earth. Or maybe one of the best.

I made it as you did, it was wonderful. I will probably cut back the sugar some next time; 1 cup is a lot more than I usually use and we're watching our sugar consumption. 2/3 cups should be fine for us. I used Lipton (I usually use Luzianne) and it was very good. Thanks for your very homey and informative video. Liquid gold is right!
