You can practice scrimshaw on plastic or beef bone. But really, it's pretty easy to find people throwing out old upright pianos with genuine ivory keys -- pick the keys with stained or cracked keys to practice on, and reserve the good pieces for production later. It's frightening how much ivory goes into landfills with old upright pianos that have seen their last tuning.

How do deer bones work? I've got those in abundance.

7 Year old question, did you ever get an answer? I found a very old looking deer jawbone with most of the teeth intact. A native American friend of mine suggested that I scrimshaw it. I hate to clean the patina off of it, haven't decided yet.

New sub, thanks for the content. I found your video interesting informative and entertaining. I am a retired carpenter, artist and carver. Never tried scrimshaw, but think I will. About 40 years ago I had a good friend who did excellent scrimshaw, honor to you "Blackfoot".

Thank you for this great video. I was given a small packet of piano keys a couple of years ago and they sit in my stash waiting for a project. You have inspired me to give this a try.

How difficult are materials like this to work with when you're carving out a solid piece? I have something in mind that I want that I cant find anywhere,& I'd started to wonder if I could buy a blank & try it myself.But I specifically want mammoth ivory;is it very easy to carve & shape,or no?

would this same technique work on wood? or would the paint not rub away?
@artheen4713
7 жыл бұрын
With wood, the stain will seep into the capillary parts of the wood grain, making it spread out with the grain. That said, you can do a similar technique on end grain of very fine wood, but the end grain needs to be chisel cut and not sanded, so the fibres are straight. But it's so much easier to burn wood, so that's what almost everyone does.
