There are many videos showing buckets being built. I like the sites and videos that show the end products with yield. Actual end of season tomatoes or veggies with produce you'd want to grow. I appreciate you effort on making the video. You get a 10 for effort. And a 5 for completeness.

Where you are using the drain grate, I use a net cup. I wrap the net cup with piece of weed barrier (gardening cloth) and pack it with my potting mix. Then fill my bucket with potting mix and my plants. That's the best wicking system I have found.

That's cool. I have a lot of those type of buckets but they are taller and white. They used to have pool chemicals in them. I get them free :) Yes they are super cleaned so no chemical residue is left. I mostly have been using them for years to clean up stuff in the yard - like rocks etc. My yard grows rocks really well. :P - Heidi

Enjoyed your video. Not so much blah blah ad nauseam. Your demo was short, sweet and finished quick. Liked. I'll be trying this in the spring.

Good video. I have a lot of buckets with holes in them and now figured out how I can convert them into self watering. When I travel I always have his issue!

Always good to have planters that water them selves. ;)

alot more engineering involved based on what buckets, and wicking baskets you have. i made 4 of these with home depot buckets, some hydroponic net cups, i figured out the depth of the net cup and determined what hole size i needed, then i got the correct holesaw and went from there

a small old butter container or anything like that would work.. the bottom of a 20 oz water or soda bottle would work too.

Do you ever use these for indoor herbs or veggies? Summer does not last long here in PA! Would be nice for Winter crops, or maybe make a Micro Earth Bucket like the other KZitem vidio post

I thought of using drain fittings, too, but abandoned the idea when I realized they probably make those parts with the nasty plastic chemicals. Drains don't conduct drinking water and they must withstand chemicals, weather and byproducts of fermenting foods and waste.

I got some blue lowes buckets but when i put the bucket in the other there is only about three inches of space between the two? What can I use as a wicking basket?

Why do use the paper ? wouldn't that block the water from coming up ? great idea with the roof grate .. they'll last much longer than plastic cups

Is 1/2" air gap enough between the bottom of the inside bucket and your water level?
@VarnHomestead

if the water isn't coming into the bucket you may need to put a wick in place to soak the water up into the bucket. you could just use an old T-shirt in the drain grate... I placed the over flow hole on the bottom bucket so the water comes into the bottom of the top bucket.

Right-on, Firehouse Pickle Buckets rule! Much better looking than used white or Home Depot buckets any day.

just cut the end of the pic that goes at the bottom at an angle rather than bothering with all the notches and holes.

I was thinking the same thing. I cut a 45ish degree angle on the end of the pvc pipe. Never had any problems with water filling the reservoir that way.

If you want root rot follow this build. The only reason i say that is because if you can see light through the buckets, it's going to cause problems. 0 light in the root zone or you'll get root rot.Use black buckets!

to keep the soil from falling into the water reservoir. It will degrade and eventually breakdown. Now I'm just balling up a small peace of an old T-shirt and placing it in the grate to keep the soil in place. It will allow water to be pulled up into the soil and breaks down slower.

Using 2 buckets is wastefull and unecessary. Use one bucket and an internal water reservour.
