Usually you would use a 7 sand to 1 cement mix but after making several test batches we found 7 to 1 was not up to the test. They broke if dropped from a 1.5 meter fall and after fully curing the blocks when you hit the block with a hammer it should ring like a bell. The mix we ended up using was 5 to 1. Not sure why maybe it was the quality of the cement or the sand? It may sound strange to everybody but I always tasted the sand to make sure it had no salt in it as salt can comprise the end result. Tasting it and spitting it out was the easiest way to test for salt LOL.
Water is very important to get right. If you have a hand full of mix in your hand and squeeze the mix it should stay in a ball but no water should come out of the mix while squeezing it. This is a handy web site you may like to read.
The Rebar we used in the walls are 12mm. They were placed vertically 500mm apart and horizontally every second coarse from memory. The architect in the plan asked for 10mm but this house is all about strength and surviving natural disasters of which it has already proved itself.
We brought the machine from a manufacturer called Oberly in Manila and found them through a web site called Sulit.com.
You will also need to buy pallets that go under each block while it cures so they cost a bit and they have a few different styles available but I recommend the cast ion pallets as they are very strong and rigid.
