Also, is there any point in adding a rust or is it pointles in this mix? Why did you not use it in this case? I thought it gives more thrust to the rocket. Thanks in adance. Your fan Juraj.

Hey Grant, what's the biggest sugar rocket you can build? Are these scalable? Looking to recreate H-type rockets for an Iron Man flight project I'm working on... So we need 50+lbs of thrust per rocket. Is that possible?
@TheKingofRandom
8 жыл бұрын
I suppose it's possible, but beyond the scope of my experiments. Have you thought about working with commercial motors?
@hacksmith
8 жыл бұрын
We've been working with G-Class motors, which are the highest you can buy without a license. They top out at about 25lbs of thrust for 1.7s, which isn't very ideal. We'd get a license, but there aren't actually any licensing clubs in Ontario, so we would have to drive down to the states to do a course ... and then as soon as they saw what we're using these rockets for (human propulsion) we'd have our license revoked haha.

Didnt expect to see you here. I have a major concern about your big project, you might get the right materials but can you try to experiment with cooling systems? DARPA developed a glove that you can cool your hands in to lower temperature, and that can be used in your project. Cool the suit, and your body. That way, even in high temperature you can work to the maximum of your ability. Good luck!

I made similar rockets in 1970, we used equal by weight potassium nitrate and powder sugar, a pinch of sulfur and pinch of charcoal. We just rolled paper around a marking pen, put part of a cotton ball in the top and masking tape, we put our fuel and fuse, folded the paper and taped the bottom end closed, added a stick. We could make one in just a few minutes. We were 12 and we made our own fireworks also.

@@ldtexas1648 Love to hear from Mik on how cornstarch is "explosive by itself" as even heat/shock or extreme pressure is required to detonate any explosive. Therefore, my guess is that he is referring to aerialized corn starch (or any combustible fine powder) is extremely flammable. Depending upon the situation (amount aerialized, humidity, space size, airflow, etc.) it can create conditions that are ripe for a flash fire. Even then though, there has to be an ignition source. Grain elevators and factories that produce lots of fine powder require extra ventilation and grounding straps (and sometimes non-sparking tools during operations) to avoid this very issue.

Here's another trick: make the fuel and then put it in a metal pot. You can put it your oven at 125-150°C for just under half an hour. This takes the potassium nitrate's ability to act like potassium naturally does.

If you want your sugar rocket to be more powerful add crushed celluloid to the mix. The celluloid will provide more oxygen so you get more power when burning the mix. I used to make rockets and found it to be the perfect mixture. Ping pong balls are made of celluloid. You can add two or three crushed ping pong balls to mixture.

EGHHHHH, imperial system. 2000ft? What? :/ 2000ft = 609m.. Whoa! That's insane. You should make a staged rocket! Make 4 of these motors to lift higher stages that uses an FPV set up with some aerodynamic fins and a servo release to detach the stages/deploy the parachute. Should get you up to about 2km, easy :) Or you could make the nozzles smaller to increase the burn time? Or you can use it as an SRB powered JATO RC aircraft :D
@aval1998
10 жыл бұрын
smaller the nozzle you'll need to make the motor smaller because if the nozzle is too small it'll explode due to pressure, well that's what I think at least...
@xl0xl0xl0

His calculations are very wrong. The formula he used does not take atmosphere into account. More like 50-100 meters, still nice.
@Xenro66

***** Mine or..? If you meant mine, I didn't put any maths into it at all. I can't be bothered to work out the Δv and work out the lost of said Δv through atmospheric drag. If I wanted to, I _prooobably_ could but that takes long lol aval1998 Hmm yes you're right. How would you control the burn time on a normal SRB then? o.O
@xl0xl0xl0

Jordan O'C The authors calculation, see towards the end of the description how he got the height. He plugged the 12 seconds the rocket spent falling back into d = 1/2 * g * t^2, which I hope you agree does not give anything close to the real height.
@pyromen321
10 жыл бұрын
The rocket could not have reached higher than 1,150 feet, but it most likely To find 2,300 feet, he just used the 1/2(9.8m/s^2)*t^2 formula, which would only be accurate if there was no atmosphere. I calculated it using drag formulas, and found that for a 12 second fall and a rocket like his, it would not be possible for the rocket to have reached more than 1,150 feet. I explained this in greater depth in another comment.

Found out once upon a Superbowl halftime that if you shoot 100 sky rocket fireworks over the only gas station in a small town... a) they have a little known sensor that kills power to EVERYTHING, b) ppl wanting chips and such are beyond pissed[& in the dark], & c) yes, the cops DO show up eventually.

Fortunately I didn't know you MUST have a hollow core !!! I tryed launching it beside & beside the house ?! All I got was a flare out the nozzle !!! This was in the Beaches in Toronto. @soxrok2212

GunEnthusiast Because they are not compacting it. When you cook it, the sugar becomes sticky and holds everything together like a dough so it can be put in engines or molded into other shapes. It really doesn't matter, both work great!
