does this work with creases i am trying to do wrinkles or creases on a fabric and in the 2.10.8 gimp all you had to do is go to bump map
@JSAbbott

It could potentially work on fabric. You would need to use a combination of a normal map and a height/bump map.

thanks. thats what i have been looking. but the size of maps 31mb is huge please guide to make it as low as possible [is going to 1mb possible??]
@JSAbbott
6 ай бұрын
The total size of all of my maps from this tutorial is only around 10MB. It is really going to depend on the size you are using (512px, 1K, 2K, 4K) and the scale and 'density' of your photograph. Only make and use the texture maps you absolutely need. 1MB for multiple texture maps from a photo is pretty much impossible.

Welcome. I've never used Source so I have no idea how it uses materials. If you are using it for modding, then you need to use the same file format (PNG, JPG, BMP) that the original material used.

very helpful many thanks.. is it possible to make an alpha from a photo to use as a displacement texture in blender i.e an old coin or medallion image ? TIA
@JSAbbott

A displacement map is just a desaturated image so you can use the same technique as the height map.

@@JSAbbott we had a go did not seem to achieve smooth clear result as with some alpha images we tried.. maybe we not doing something correct..

@@hasger1941 If you are making textures from a photo it could just be the photo itself. If it has even lighting and no warping it is best. You may just need to keep playing with the levels for get a clean texture map. Also, make sure you have enough geometry on the 3D mesh or your displacement map won't work properly.
@hasger1941
8 ай бұрын
@@JSAbbott correct, the image is very clean though it has speckles of black on the white areas (just noticed by zooming) which is causing the roughness... the geometry is ok, we just use a subdivided plane. The only thing we can not seem to know how to get the hight to be rounded rather than flat. we know its to do with the whiteness at peak of the image for example we have some donut shape alpha's that actually look as such rounded. maybe there are other setting that need to be adjusted..

This is an older tutorial but I followed it and it still works: kzitem.info/news/bejne/sYuOxaNnoqlhq6Q You just need to add a displacement map node and connect this texture map to the height and then connect the displacement map node to the displacement of the output node.

I like the tutorial and 1 am going to try this because it looks like it works, is there a way to use texture paint in Blender 2.78 to create custom stylized textures. I have a tutorial on how to do that but it does not seem to work the way the instructor shows he, goes a mile a minute and skips steps and doesn't show you how he got to an option he is using. I can see where this could be expanded to use blender with a new layer on top to paint your version of a texture and then use this method to create all the other maps. Is the texture paint method in blender harder. I see most people are using using adobe tools for this. Do they do that instead of using texture paint in blender because it is easier to use substance paint instead of texture paint in blender to create the stylized textures.
@JSAbbott
Жыл бұрын
A lot of people use tools like Photoshop, GIMP, or Krita for texture painting because they offer more flexibility (brushes, layer options, etc.). If you really want to learn texture painting completely within Blender I would highly recommend checking out Grant Abbitt (www.youtube.com/@grabbitt). He has a bunch of easy-to-follow tutorials for texture painting.

This is fine and all, but the texture will still tile horribly because the diffuse image contains obvious gradients. I'm looking for a method to remove brightness variance across the diffuse image to improve tiling, and this tutorial will not do that.

This is not the best way of making textures but it is simple, quick, and free. You can also try Materialize (boundingboxsoftware.com/materialize/) which is free or you could use Substance Sampler (www.adobe.com/products/substance3d-sampler.html) which is a paid product.
