Hi Tony, I just started looking your videos and learn alot already, thank you. I see I did it all wrong about compost, now I build a 3 bin compost frame. My question to you is can I mix in the "compost" I already have only from greens, its like dark and wet, but can I use it? I will now make it mix it right with greens and browns, maybe put in some horse manure for get it starting! Again, thanks for your videos 😀

Hi Tony, quick correction: the pallets that you used in this video are standard 4-way pallets and not euro pallets. Euro pallets tend to measure 1200mm X 800mm and so are not as square as the standard 4-way pallets which measure 1200mm X 1000mm.

By the time compost fully matures the larvae should be long gone. They have short lifecycle. They should not attracted to finished compost. Also are they black soldier flies or regular houseflies. The larvae look sort of similar but still very distinct. If its black soldier flies this is not really a bad thing. They can be allies. May need to cover food material better so house flies dont land on it to lay eggs. Whereas Black soldier flies lay eggs neat and above the old food not on it.

I wouldn’t recommend using plastic floor protection. I did, the exact same stuff as used in this video and it quickly disintegrated (I presume from UV exposure) and now the crumbling plastic has contaminated my compost. I would recommend lining the inside of the bins with more timber, perhaps from dismantling more pallets if available. I think the size of your compost bin is more important than design. Pallet size bins are great, anything smaller isn’t very efficient. Just throw some sort of cover over to keep out the rain, especially in the uk.

Well this stuff has been on my bins for over 3 years with no issues other than a slight bleeching by the sun. If it starts to break down I will just remove it and add new. However I will also be building a roof structure over these so its not an issue

The main problem with the hot composting method is that the heating process create a lot of CO2, so you loose a lot a carbone so useful for your soil. When it is possible do like nature does, that is to say cold composting. Put your organic matter directly in any beds and let the micro organisms degrade the matter. Yes it takes more time than hot composting but it is a lot less work than hot composting and you keep a lot more useful carbon in you soil.

In the United Kingdom, where this video is made, we are permitted by law to apply for an "allotment" which is a small allotment of land to be used to grow fruit and vegetables. It came into force after the Second World War, as there was great poverty in the country and families were having real difficulties. So an Act of Parliament was passed to allow people a very small piece of land for growing food, or for keeping chickens or pigs. The land is not sold, but rented per year. This is a yearly fee, and is usually a small fee equivalent to one or two days work by the lowest paid person in the UK. There is a waiting list for these allotments, with some people waiting many years. We have an allotment, and we waited around six months to get ours. We pay £50 (GPP) per year, but the amount varies just depending on where you live and how much the local councils set the amount for.

Nice, I finally stepped up my compost game this year, previously it was just a pile in the garden. Got four palettes and lashed them together, it's the ugliest thing, nowhere near as neat a job as yours! Added two more bays as and when these filled up. Three bays is enough really, for the volume of material I have available to put through the system, even though more bays would be handy for turning over and the compost would be ready quicker. This year I'll have enough of my very own lovely dark compost to top-dress a couple of large beds without buying any in, just from my own clippings, kitchen waste and what I can scrounge from the neighbours, so I am super pleased.

Most designs have "open" sides as to let air in so it doesn't go anaerobic? Do you turn yours more frequently or?
@simplifygardening

The reason compost turns anaerobic is when its not built correct in the first place. usually contains way too much nitrogen as people don't understand the ratios each material contains, they see things as green and brown, where as in reality there are both green and brown of varying amounts. the video in the pinned comment walks you through that. Air does not work into the compost from outside of it.

Cool! Didn't know that :) didn't like the open designs, seem like the holes would get full of dirt/compost anyways :)

We have 2 pallet 'bays' here at the moment that are filling nicely. Just starting the compost journey and learning as I go. We have a spare piece of land behind our shed that we hope to make 3 or 4 bays. I have seen that plastic sheeting so will definitely grab some and use it to line it. 👍

Great video. Planning to build a set up like this in the winter. One question though, how do you get enough material to fill that amount composting space? I'm struggling to fill my 2 and I'm doing it over long periods of time so it never gets hot as there's never the full mass that you describe, in the bin at any one time.

If you are willing to ask around, you can get a lot from neighbors and community members nearby who just throw things away. I have a bucket with a lid to keep rain out, outside my shed. It holds empty large garbage bags for my neighbors to use to bag their fall leaves. They come get bags and drop off their fall leaves anytime that works for them. I encourage them to mow them up so they fit in the bag easier (plus it saves me a step from having to run them through my mower too). They are grateful to do it. I found a horse barn nearby that loves to give me free manure- just be sure it doesn't have chemicals (talk to them to make sure they use clean hay or test it if you don't know). Charles Dowding has videos. I get used organic coffee grounds twice a week from my local coffee shop for free. I stop at houses nearby that have large trees and ask if they'd like help with them etc. People are grateful for the help- especially the elderly. We use a large tarp and then put the whole thing easily into the back of our truck to transport. Be sure not to get black walnut leaves, though. They contain a substance that inhibits seed sprouting.

Hi tony, I'm using this system of composting. Is it advisable to add fairly fresh poultry manure to the pile with plenty of dry leaves and should I be concerned about medication that the chickens may have been given? This material is from a poultry farm.
@simplifygardening

Poultry medication usually breaks down suring composting process. its dairy and horse medication to usually watch for because of the broad leaf weedkiller they ingest
Tony, how does the compost BREATHE? I've never had a system that only allows air from the top? Thanks.

John compost if made correctly has most of the sir required to get it into the high thermolific temps. then as it cools you turn the compost once, this is sufficient. the problem with most people making compost is that they dont understand structure in the compost, water content and carbon nitrogen ratio. I cover all this info in my new book coming out around the end of April 2022
