The dimensions do not have to be exactly 255 by 150, but whatever you decide on, they all have to be the same. Just remember you have to lift it up later, so something 36 inches square might be... a bit too much! Brother Adam made boxes with frames that were 2 or 3 foot square as an experiment. Suffice it to say the brothers had to get an engine hoist to lift the boxes once full.

Burning is for disinfection and kills possible parasites. You can also use linseed oil on the outside to make it last more.

Why are the joints in the wood put together in that side-to-face-to side fashion? What is the advantage to it?

Here in Europe, some people think, that Jappanese hive dimmensions suit better for the Apis cerana japonica, because it makes smaller colonies than Apis mellifera carnica. Does anybody have any experiences with Apis mellifera carnica in Jappanese hive dimmensions? Would Warre hive dimmensions be better for carnica? I would like to follow Jappanese metodology incl. no top bars, just a wire or wooden cross with carnica bee, but wonder about "best" hive dimmensions. Thank you for Your great video! PS - I love the Apis cerana japonica ability to deal with mites and their anti - hornet strategy.

Hi. I know it's been a while since this comment. Just wondering how you got on, if at all? I'd definitely follow the overall dimensions of the Warre hive for Apis mellifera. It doesn't seem much bigger, but one standard Warre box is actually equivalent to two of the standard Japanese boxes - with European bees you're basically gonna end up with a ridiculously tall "leaning tower of beeza"... I don't see why you couldn't adopt the Japanese approach of cross-bars with Apis mellifera, but to be honest, I'm not sure why you would... In an exact reverse of yourself, I just started a colony of Apis cerana in a standard Warre hive. The only difference is that the height is only 18cm per box, instead of 21, and the top bars are removable, with a notch that fits over the nail.

Will the pile box hive overwinter better than other popular hives with higher survivor rates of colonies? I'm interested in this type of hive to look at this type of question. Especially now with varroa problems. And I don't know if apis cerana has as much trouble with varroa as apis mellifera...?

Originally apis cerana bees have varroa mite so that it is not big problem for them. Survivor rates of colonies could be lower because it is hard to inspect inside and do something for bees.
