thank you for your tutorial because I have been having trouble trying to find a good one for unsponges myself. Yours turned out great and I will be making some this week. I have some left over burlap that I am going to try and use up for my scrubby side. Thank you.

My only advice would be don’t use anything too absorbent for your stuffing or they end up getting so waterlogged they become heavy and unable to dry easily - maybe stuff them with fruit nets or burlap? The stuffing is partly for the hand hold shape anyway, as the flannel/terry cloth will soak up plenty of moisture alone xx

Thanks 🥰 it’s from John Lewis - I prefer a simpler but heavy duty mechanical machine that I can easily repair myself to the complex computerised modern machines and this machine does everything I need, takes standard parts and feet, and is gorgeous looking to boot! Xxx

Good idea. I use loofah for scrubbing and it is great. It is natural and biodegradable.

I keep meaning to try this for scrubbing actually - I think it would be more durable than a single sheet of fruit net xx

You could just bias bind around the opened out fruit bag and use that to scrub things. It would rinse easier and dry quicker. Then use a cloth for wiping which would also rinse easier and dry quicker. Interesting idea though and very cute looking.

We do use cloths as well - I don’t think bias binding would fasten to the fruit net very well as it (the net) is so flimsy. I was thinking of stuffing one fruit net with a load of others to form a ball of fruit nets - but then I don’t want to buy fruit nets in the first place as that causes a demand for more plastic wrapped fruit xx

What is the black stuffing part made of? I couldn't catch it in the video, but be great if you tell me☺️

It is black flannel fabric - not the face washcloth towelling, but the flannel you might get pyjamas made from xxx

I couldn't really determine the measurements to cut can you let me know?
@LizzieDeanMakes
6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jenni I made them with scraps that were all the same size so I didn’t measure I just used what I had - the pieces of towelling and printed cotton were about 12cm x 18cm and the black flannel squares were about 20cm x 32cm then folded into 4 to make pouches about 10cm x 16cm which I stuffed with tiny scraps. I wouldn’t use the plastic fruit net again as I tend to use them to wipe the electric hob when it is on and the plastic melted - but if you are just scouring dishes with them I would say add an extra couple of layers as that stuff does really help with scouring stuck on food. I hope that helps xx

Do you wash it cold? I wonder if the plastic net would release bad stuff if washed hot?
@LizzieDeanMakes
6 жыл бұрын
There is always a risk of micro plastics from this - just as there is in putting the nets into landfill - I figure reusing them first at least gives them some second life - if you have a guppy sack to wash them in that would be best. They wash fine at 40 degrees C which is the hottest we use here. I hope that helps xx

what about scraps of cotton quilt batting as stuffing?
@LizzieDeanMakes
5 жыл бұрын
Yes that would work - having used them now though I would say that you don’t actually want the stuffing to be too absorbent or they will never dry out between uses, and will be heavy and prone to moulding. Xx

Wouldn't the fabric inside get moldy cause of staying moist so long?
@LizzieDeanMakes

We wash them regularly then dry them fully, but when I make more I will use less absorbent stuffing material for that exact reason. I think I will stuff them with fruit netting perhaps - it depends if I can ask people at work to save it for me. The aim is to use something that a) is recycled and b) is not going to produce micro plastic in the grey water from the sink (and when laundered). It’s a tricky balance I think xx

The clementine mesh is a good idea, however, I wouldn't use this sponge. The layers can't dry out and the bacteria gets in. Maybe fold regular towel strips into thick sponge size squares and stitch the corners until you are done washing, or even roll them and stitch through. then you can unstitch them and hang them to dry until you've collected enough of kitchen cloth to do laundry because they are too dirty to wash with your regular clothes. edit: now I see you put only one inside, that could work then. I thought you said you would put them all inside a single case. I wanted to see you add the mesh though

The mesh was part of the sandwich of layers that I sewed around before turning out so you can’t actually see it when I sew it in place. I would suggest adding less absorbent stuffing instead of cotton, as when it gets wet you are quite right that it stays sodden - perhaps even stuff it with more fruit nets, as the toweling is absorbant enough and the stuffing is just to make it 3D and easy to hold in your hand. I hope that helps xx

@LizzieDeanMakes

I must film it soon - sorry - my update is to use less absorbent padding - I am thinking of stuffing them with fruit nets next time. The benefit of the unsponge is the shape and the scourer - but the downside is that they take ages to dry if the materials used are too absorbent. Also don’t wipe the stove when it’s hot with the fruit net side - it melts! Hope that helps xx

panty hose nylon might work as well? By the way , my grandmother used to have some that were mde by her in the 40s and 50s tht were very similar to yours so I think this my have been a thing before plastic was a thing.

That’s a good idea - it would certainly make better stuffing as less absorbent (they end up very heavy and prone to moulding as they stay wet if the stuffing is too absorbent) xx

What do u make unpaper towels with and how do u keep them stain free?
@LizzieDeanMakes

Yes they can! After using these for a few weeks I would say that a less moisture retaining stuffing would work better, like a loose wadding rather than the dense flannel. They work well but can be heavy to handle as they get full of water. Poodles rock 😍
