The accuracy comes with consistent usage because even tho it may be off, when it’s always off the same way it’s becoming a source of validation for a trend. If you calculated the calories you need properly with several calculators online and track your intake it works just fine :)

Hi Bryan, just want to drop my thanks because you improved my life! I watched your calorie deficit video last August 2022 and I lost weight and felt better about myself since! I started working out Feb 2023 and 3 months later I'm already seeing results mentally and physically. :) And just like you I am reliant on data! I just got my Apple Watch Series 8 today and I'm excited to see how much this will improve my development! Thanks again for the inspiration you give.

I recently (4months) started my “fitness journey” and my Apple Watch has been such a great tool not just to keep track of my workouts but to keep me inspired and keep me healthy as well. So cool!! I have been using my series 7 while doing strength training. I have a scale that connects to the health app so it will automatically keep my weight up to date. I also keep it nice and snug and clean of course so even when benching, I get good readings. I would also use my finger on the Digital Crown to help get a heart rate faster if it can’t get a reading. Also use treadmills and elliptical that allow a Apple Watch connection which helps keep my cardio very accurate.

If you have trouble getting an accurate heart rate reading during workouts you can do what I do and use a Bluetooth heart rate strap that’s paired to the Apple Watch. I use a Polar H10. It also saves battery on the Apple Watch since it doesn’t have to use the laser. I get much better readings. I can do HITT. Go for long runs. Bench press. Hope this helps!

I’m the same way with mine! The only time I ever don’t wear it is when I’m charging it. Lol it’s not accurate to the bone but it’s helped me so much on my fitness journey. At first I thought it wasn’t necessary and technically it isn’t, but the tracking has helped me stay more motivated and helped me to get better sleep.

@@Mohith7548 I think so mainly because of the phase of life I’m in for now. I have less time for various workouts and more time spent on busy mom life. Smart watch features more valuable to me right now than fitness features. Plus it works better with my iPhone.

I'll be getting an Apple Watch soon. I'm curious, about detecting HR. I use a Garmin Tickr HR Monitor when I go cycling, either indoor or outdoor. Would it be beneficial to wear the Tickr when I lift weights? Maybe using both would show more accuracy. Thoughts?

do u think using the default traditional strength training is better than using strong? i find that strong does not track heart rate accurately but i usually start my workout there because im logging my sets and reps after each set during my rest. do u think i should switch to the apple training app and just type in my stats to strong afterwards the entire workout?

Hey Bryan, do you use a HR chest strap or would you? I’m thinking about getting the Polar H10 chest strap, Also, I can’t wear my Apple Watch all day because I drive a trash truck for a living and bumpiness adds a crazy amount of steps, like a few thousand per day so that’s a bummer for me, unless you know of a workaround to this….I don’t.

Where did you pull the 10% from? I know this is not an exhaustive test, but compared to a direct calorimeter measurement via a respirometer done at the performance lab at Stanford, the Apple Watch showed as much as 50% or so error.

I use the peloton app with the Apple Watch for my runs. I’ve experienced the heart rate monitor ghosting also. I fixed this by wearing the Apple Watch upside down during my workouts. With the screen facing the underside of my wrist on top of my veins it no longer loses connection

Thanks for the tips. For the ghosted out HR I would recommend a BT chest strap like the Polar to you. You can pair it with our watch and the HR will be as accurate as possible throughout your workout. I would really love to find a solution to the AW extremely overshooting on calories. Especially on workouts that have shorter bursts with longer breaks in between like street skateboarding. Here the AW overshoots like 2-3x for me constantly. You do a couple of tricks that really get your HR up and have some breaks afterwards so your friends can hit the same spot. Here my Garmin shows like 600-700kcal for a 1.5h sesh. 800 if I have an extremer session. While the AW sometimes goes up to 2000kcal for the same session which is just plain wrong and makes this value worthless if you also align your diet to you calorie count :(

How do you deal with the apple watch when doing kettlebell swings? If i keep it on my wrist the kettlebell smashes into it when doing cleans. I turn the watch head around on my wrist. But then it won’t monitor my wrist. Very annoying..

I posted this on an earlier video. All amazing info. I have a hard time tracking calories in and out. Apple Watch does sound like the perfect fit however I have one major question. How do I protect it during kettlebell workouts? I’m afraid I’ll destroy it. Do you keep your phone in a pocket while working out? It just seems like it would be annoying.

Awesome video! I am a 4-5 year Apple Watch user, and also experience the grayed out heart rate during workout sessions. It’s very frustrating! For me, it seems to happen primarily when switch heart rate zones. For example, if I’m going low intensity 90-105bpm and then crank it up the sensor cannot seem to track from 95-135bpm and grays out either until I maintain the nighter heart rate zone for some time or I wait some moments until it comes back down to the lower zone range. I’m not sure if it had to do with the position on my wrist or how snug the strap is. I’ve tried every combo and just end up frustrated by it. I find the watch to be fairly accurate regardless for Active burn at the lower HR so have been living with annoyance. I’ve in part thought maybe it’s just my Series 4 acting up. Open to others thoughts here but overall great info! Second observation - why are the Apple Watch age/weight/heigh settings not simply pulled from Health from your own iCloud data? Seems redundant to need to set it in multiple places and watch setting never changes even when another app updates your Health body measurements. SUBBED!

Apple Watch Ultra behaves similarly, with quicker recovery/recalibration… my suspicion is still transition between HR zones. The quick fix trick seems to be to pause a moment, take a deep breath with the watch held steady around chest / heart level. Would love someone with real knowledge on this to chime in and elaborate or clarify.

I'm confused about what your point is for "earn it correctly". I'm a fast walker and my heart rate when I'm walking goes up to around 120 (cardio isn't my strong point), and I find it always triggers an outdoor walk; should I not let it do this?

It over estimates for me. But I’m ok with that! So for 1 month of use tracking all calories burned with the Apple Watch. Tracking all calories in as honest and accurate as possible with My Plate by live strong: Calorie deficit= -52723 Actual Weight lost= 11.4lbs Obviously it’ll work out different for everyone. But it was consistent through the month. So instead of looking at a lb as 3500 calories, I look at a lb as 4625 “Apple Watch” calories. Works for me and as I said that stayed consistent.

My Apple Watch series 10 is showing heart rate while kept on any surface like bed or table. It’s even measuring the heart rate of table. How come is this possible. It should show some warning when am not wearing the watch ryt? But it’s showing the heart rate of the table when clicked the heart app.

I have found that if I record all workouts as high intensity work out it more matches the calories burned when I use my polar 10 hr strap.with polar beat. I mainly walk.

Why don’t you use a more accurate HRM like a chest strap? Or a forearm HRM if you want it to be more accurate? And a lot of the problems you describe are fixed by a Garmin device, including more accuracy, recovery data, and better battery. Is there a different reason you keep the Apple Watch?

I love my watch, I just don’t like feeling hostage to it! But I’d recommend everyone get one (smartwatch) to hold them selves accountable.

I personally put my watch a notch looser when working out, but this is just so I can move my watch easier since I tend to use wrist wraps and straps often.
