One of my favorite non standard cards is Ob Nixilis’s Cruelty. It doesn’t say destroy, but -5/-5 will get rid of a lot of problems and the exile effect ain’t too bad either. You find a lot of treasures just looking through bulk commons you otherwise wouldn’t know about

One deck I've made and am truly proud of is Lurrus of the Dream-Den, with a theme around Milling. You can mill yourself to get card advantage, and then when your pieces are assembled, can control the board or mill out your opponents. I've made myself a mass reanimation ally deck that I enjoy playing. There's a bunch of loot cards to draw for a mass reanimate card (rally the ancestors, living death, command the dreadhorde, etc.), and then discard the important ally creatures (hagra diabolist, chasm guide, kazuul warlord, etc.), also a hint of self mill. With the way the older allies are worded, they'll all individually trigger for each single ally entering the battlefield at once. Which can usually kill at least one person through the diabolist and/or through combat right after. It's definitely really slow, and takes a lot of set-up, but man does it feel good if it goes off.

I’m attempting to build a Hazoret deck and it’s relatively different than most deck techs I see on KZitem for the commander because there are SO MANY new tools released since Amonket was released. It’s even different from edh recs mainstays because even though I’ve used that site a lot for the deck I’ve added my own synergies and a burn plan. It has discard and recursion but those are to start an engine where I draw a few cards every turn but either use or discard them to damage my opponents. The recursion package is to generate value so I don’t have worry about discarding most of my cards and I’ve got some other ways to get card advantage, I’d say more than most mono red decks.

47:20 I think the problem they reach when discussing Uniqueness with Feather is that they are using "Unique" to describe two different qualities: The Popularity of a Commander & The Rarity of a Commander's Effect. Feather is a Unique Commander; no other commander does what it does. That is what unique means: "One of a Kind". If they used different terms like Underplayed to suggest low Popularity/Familiarity and Unique to describe rare strategies, that would have been more straight forward.

One of the big problems I think with a lot of the discussion around uniqueness is that most people aren’t putting much thought into other people’s decks. When you sit down at the table and see the other person’s deck you may see some synergy’s that don’t quite get there and go with oh look a good stuff pile. Not saying that people never play good stuff but for example but a lot of the build around my Tayam deck is about reusing children of korlis. There are creature tutors specifically to grab it the plan is to keep recurring it with Tayam use it with something like a necropotence or ad nauseum and a Vito to dome somebody to death. If it doesn’t get there though it just looks like I’m playing a Tayam deck. The point being if you sit at a table and someone’s unique deck idea doesn’t get there and they don’t introduce it beforehand to obscure their game-plan keep things surprising you wouldn’t know that they have something cool going on behind the curtain.

When I was little, I liked to open my toys to learn how they worked. And used to put them back in. But, I also used to put them back in somewhere else, by that I mean, for instance, using pieces of wood and paper for the outside, and fitting them there in another shape. Yes it was jank, it usually got stuck a lot more than I'd like to admit (3d printing was not even a glimmer in my eyes) but just accomplishing something akin to what seems to be so far from my skills, even if just a bad copy of what I had, created in me a sense of accomplishment that I cannot express in words. Yes it was jank, it didn't work as well and I just used pieces from another thing that was "better" at "thinging" than mine, but I DID IT DAMNIT! IT IS MINE AND MINE ALONE! AND WORKS (badly) but works! And I am _probably_ the only one with that thing. I don't admonish anyone that just takes things that are readily available, I just like to use what I did with my own hands, whenever possible.

Great episode! Speaking of Kelsien, The Plague: When I first saw the last precons, I was like "screw all the main commanders and just give me Kelsien!" And I went on and built my own Goblin-Sharpshooter-Style-Deck but with Deathtouch and giving my opponents creatures to shoot down. Once Kelsien has Deathtouch through Basilisk Collar, Aspect of Gorgon, Death Pits of Rath, Gift of Doom (this one is MVP), etc. and is equipped with Thornbite Staff which untaps him everytime a creature dies, I can just shoot down everything that hits the table and generate a lot of experience counters (a lot of other untap-effects are included, too). When my opponents run out of creatures I just give them some through Forbidden Orchard or Akroan Horse for example or in the best case Varchild's War-Riders - they have a cumulative upkeep cost: Have an opponent create a 1/1 red Survivor creature token! Awesome! But wait there's more: Giving Kelsien Infect let's me kill indestructible stuff! Finishing the game with a Surestrike Trident hitting my opponents for however big Kelsien is at the moment feels really great! The deck is really consistent and everybody is bamboozled playing against it at least for the first time. Perfect!

I know this is an old post but I build Atraxa without +1/+1, -1/-1 counters or plainswalkers. Didn't really work but got to include 4/5 Myojins.

My most unique deck was "Skeleton Ship that can't win." 99 cards and after lots of testing I removed any way of winning even by accident (and still milled people out, so that was a fail I guess). The card in there I don't see often was Mindlock Orb.

I agree with the Craterhoof hate. It's easy to see what's unique about my playstyle, I have 30 green decks. I know the color inside and out. You don't see Molimo? He was my first commander (I think), but I ultimately replaced him with Multani. I do have another deck list ready for him, once I build it.

Recently built a Vadrok Mutate deck. I included cards like Shamans Trance, Reinforcements, Breaking Point, Retribution of the Meek, Risk Factor and Josh's favorite: Sevinne's Reclamation. Breaking Point can be punishing to the player who is ahead, giving someone the choice to wipe the board or take 6 damage. if they take 6, mutate on vadrok and cast it again...rinse...repeat. meanwhile Shamans trance gives me value from other people's graveyard. Combo it with Reinforcements and I can put creatures on my library from my opponent's Graveyard.

For the Damage Prevention deck I'd run "Archangel Avacyn" as the commander. Shes Boros, and fits the theme perfectly. When she comes into play everything gains Indestructible until EoT, then she has a flip that deals damage to everything.

So I have a bit of a "unique" win-con in my Edgar Markov Vampire tribal deck. Instead of mercilessly swarming my opponents with vampires until they are no more, I use "Approach of the Second Sun" to try and win. The flavor in my head being that vampires are looking for a way to be able to walk freely in the daylight. By the second time I cast A.O.T.S.S the vamps have figured it out. I also used to run a five-color Harry Potter themed wizards deck with the alternate win-con being mazes end. My in head cannon of flavor was that Voldemort had finally become truly unstoppable by the time all the mazes were complete. It was supposed to be him making more horcruxes and amassing global domination lol.

I have a Arcum Dagsson deck that the method it wins is unique. It wins by self mill, but I use arcum to tutor up cards like mirror of fate to exile my deck and grab my win cons I've exiled throughout the game.

I have recently build my first edh deck and i think its pretty unique but not sure about it so its a azorius fliers deck and i wanted to do something against a problem i had, which was that decks who want to attack arent attacking at all and just attack with 1-2 creatures and then do nothing and play cold war. I hate that, i want to see action and i dont want that others have that much time to find their combo pieces. So I chose Isperia, Supreme Judge as my commander, which is a big flying sphinx and whenever a creature attacks you, you may draw a card for each creature attacking you. Next you swing with most of your creatures every turn, so they dont fear that anything bad happens to their precious creatures. To make them attack you, you add stuff like Curse of Verbosity (so they draw a card when they attack you) or Azor's Elocuters (when they dont attack you, you will win the game). Next you finish it up with some lifegain so you won't die after a round of the table, not much but just enough to survive. One of my favorite cards in this deck is "Teferi's Veil" which is a 2cmc enchantment which lets your creatures phase out when they attacked, after combat. Had a few good fliers in my deck with vigilance and I wanted to solve, so they cannot block. But it protects your creatures as well. So swing with everything, which you do normally every turn like the deck tries to do, let your creatures phase out and then wipe the board. And then your next turn all of your creatures come back and you have propably a open board for all of your fliers. That was some text, but it just excites me that i saw this card and had this idea and thought: "what if i make some kind of grouphug deck, but very aggressive" and I was happy how it worked out, even if I havent tried it out yet (cos... reasons.) but very excited to see it in action.

Kazarov (Sengir Pureblood) with timmers and other creature damage effects. He has red for his ability, so he grants access to black and red, or Rakdos colors... ... He gets a +1/+1 counter whenever an opponent's creature takes damage, and he tims for 2 damage if you pay 3 and a red. The deck doesn't run any infinite combos, which means I keep the deathtouch in the deck, but I exclude cards like Goblin Sharpshooter. For deathtouch: > Void Beckoner, an Ikoria horror which grants a deathtouch counter by cycling it > Necrobite, save a critter with regeneration, and give it deathtouch until end of turn > Gorgon Flail, equipment which grants an additional +1/+1 > Gorgon's Head, equipment Even more deathtouch synergizes with creature damage with Pestilent Spirit, a spirit which gives your instants and sorceries deathtouch. > Spontaneous Combustion, instant, sacrifice a creature, deal 3 damage to each creature > Volcanic Fallout, instant, can't be countered, 2 damage to each creature and player > Ravaging Blaze, X cost instant, deals X damage to target creature, with the X being dealt to the creature's controller if you have spell mastery, which is somewhat similar to threshold > Cosmotronic Wave, sorcery, deal 1 damage to all creatures your opponents control, they can't block this turn > Barrage of Boulders, sorcery, 1 damage to all creatures you don't control, but they also can't block this turn, provided you meet the ferocious criteria > Famine, sorcery, 3 damage to all creatures and players > Last Kiss, instant, 2 damage to target creature, you gain 2 life > Sorin's Thirst, same thing > Pharika's Cure, ditto > Dry Spell, sorcery, 1 damage to each creature and player ...some of which become deadly board wipes with Pestilent Spirit on the field. Meet the timmers: > the commander > Kaervek (the Merciless), not the commander, Kaervek draws too much aggro > Judith (the Scourge Diva), don't worry, I run reanimator cards with different effects > Syr Carah (the Bold), because card advantage > Jaya (Venerated Firemage), because extra damage, and I'm also running Torbran and Furnace of Rath > Drakuseth (Maw of Flames), because napalm death stapled to a dragon's breath > Kamahl (Pit Fighter), because memes > Brash Taunter, because you can give him infect and have him fight something with 10 or greater power > Inferno Titan, because a countryside won't burninate itself, also memes > Goblin Cratermaker, because get wrecked, eldrazi titans > Mayhem Devil, because people just adore their fetch lands and additional casting costs It also helps to run a bit more alternative graveyard recursion than usual (like Artisan of Kozilek, Grave Upheaval, Nim Deathmantle, Torrent of Souls, Garna (the Bloodflame), and The Eldest Reborn), some undying effects, Black Market, and non-Pestilent Spirit board wipes like Massacre Girl, In Garruk's Wake, and Decree of Pain. Mana rocks, draw, and other card advantage: > Sol Ring > Arcane Signet > Rakdos Signet > Rakdos Locket > Firemind Vessel > Thought Vessel > Commander's Sphere > Seer's Lantern > Traveler's Amulet ... > Chandra (Fire Artisan) > Theater of Horrors > Arguel's Blood Fast > Brass's Bounty Odd ducks: > Silverclad Ferocidons, good with timmers > Backlash, nasty with infect > Delirium, same here > Traitor's Roar, ditto, has conspire Additional protection: > Mask of Avacyn > Voyager's Staff > Dark Dabbling ... My brew thrives on goofy old cards and jank. It used to be dumb, but I kicked a lot of butt with it after some extensive editing. Rakdos isn't just Rakdos, provided you look far enough. A dumb, but happy project which actually came to fruition.

I've built that damage prevention deck you've theorycrafted a few years ago. I went with Gisela as the general and it was quite powerful, although not very consistent. Playing stuff like Repercussion + Blasphemous Act while having a Personal Sanctuary in play definitely feels good :p Also there's no better home for Purity and Hostility!

I tried to build it with Rune-tail, Kitsune Ascendant, but it just doesn't work in mono white. I'm probably going to try again with some sort of boros or mardu commander

@@calebsaenger3344 Yeah, Rune-Tail is more suited for lifegain/pillowfort strategies. You need at least the boros colors to make that archetype works I think.

My ''unique'' idea of a deck is one that has a lot of spells and effects that protect u and ur permanents in every possible way. I'm talking about granting hexproof & indestructible to your board and hexproof for you, preventing attacks with all propaganda effects available. Cards like Platinum Angel, Platinum Eperion, Teferi's Protection and even Time Stop. Azor's Elocutors would be like the coolest win con imo for this. Angus MacKenzie would be the best commander for it but since he costs so freaking much i would settle for Tuvasa since the decklist has a lot of enchantments. Or i could go with Shalai if i drop blue which is not advisable.

Elf-Ball isn't a unique strategy, but I always get positive looks from people when I bust out my Hogaak deck and people see that's what's going on. Also, I love Brion Stoutarm and Rienne, the Angel of Rebirth. Both of those always seems to have a positive experience from other players.

I make my decks unique by throwing in effectively a combination of what I have laying around and like... net deck stuff that is obvious to make a blend of something that I would say is at least focused with a bit of jank on the side. Stuff like Fanatical Devotion and Energy Flux were my jam until Mitch started mentioning them. >_>;;

as for unique decks... I have Ramos, Dragon Engine that I run as sort of a +1/+1 and Multicolor matterd sort of deck thgat either can generate a ton of mana, or can just kinda voltron smack someone out of nowhere OR go wide. it's pretty versitile and free-form, and I've totally won games just by like.. .having 3 or 4 win cons on board at once that cannot be all answered unless somoene played like... planar cleansing or something between having a go wide army of +1/+1'd up stuff, Simic Ascendency, and Ramos who can just commander damage someone out in the air. Besides that, I have a Hatebears-y stax thing lead by Rarity, but I realistically only pull that deck out when like... someone has that coming to them. On a totally related note, it'd be really nice to have a GP Promo Sol Ring...

My favourite is a deck I call Mutually Assured Destruction, inspired by Nine Lives and the idea is to give other people enchantments that say 'When this leaves the battlefield, you lose the game'. The idea is that if I lose the game, they control the enchantment so the effect still triggers and so they also lose, so it incentive' them to target other players to make me the last one left. Not seen in anywhere I've played so not sure how unique it is, but I find it a fun political alternate win con.

My samurai deck is super unique. its not super strong but it can hold its own in a casual game. Sensei golden tail is the commander to make the few creatures in it that arent samurais into them and to keep giving more cases of bushido to normal samurais.

I actually built a deck exactly like the Damage Prevention deck, but it was really only fun to play a couple times. Too linear. I did 4 color, everything but blue. Pestilence and Red damage board wipes, White for Prevention, Green for ramp.
