Quick Summary of the 5 Tips: 1. High Pass/Low Cut (80Hz) & Low Pass/High Cut (10khz) presets. Mimics tube amp and speakers natural roll offs. 2. Compression on last block to (a) mimic studio outboard compression to even out dynamics & tame high end harshness & (b) mimics effect of a tube amps natural compression when cranked. 3. EQ: Pull out frequencies. Subtractive EQ to help gain staging down the chain. Remove low end mud & boom. High end harshness. Position: Post amp and cab & Pre Fx. EQ in the FX loop position. 4: Soft Clipping/OD pedal post amp & cab position to mimic speaker breakup and power amp saturation. More for ‘feel’ as opposed to more gain. 5. FX placement: Experiment with before and after the amp. Delay reverb B4=like pedals straight into amp & After = Studio effect/clarity.

I've started using a Hotcake OD as a way of adding more sparkle to my sound. Pedal has a ton of output and go from completely clean to fuzz territory, and it has a tone knob labelled "presence". Knobs are somewhat interactive. I've been using it set completely clean, with the presence knob all the way up, and it's wonderful after a compressor that kills highs. It does something to the signal that an EQ can't do.

great tip on the compressor last in the chain: I have an HX stomp and while it is very responsive to the guitar volume in terms of gain level, the volume drop is quite annoying in most of the amp models, so the compressor last will keep the "front end" gain dynamics while evening out the volume Great content as always, Rhett

I think that's what's so exciting about where this technology is at...people who want to experiment and use these new tools to create new sounds can. People who want to create a traditional sound can. Whats more, both of these groups can do so without needing 10s of 1000s of dollars of gear...or a bunch of different pieces of gear connected. A 13 year old can recreate the tones (or close enough) that inspire them to play...or have the freedom to innovate...in their bedroom with gear that can be amassed over a couple of xmas' and bdays. Pros can do the same without needing a full time roadie and tech hauling and maintaining a crap ton of gear.

Sometimes a song calls for a classic sound, familiarity is something to be thought of when coming up with tones of your own. Something recognized is what originally draws the audience in, until you've gotten recognition and can begin altering a sound to fit yourself. This is the evolution of musicians over time, and if you notice a lot of people get frustrated when artists change their sound. Its what they're known for. A lot of the greatest bands started out as cover bands.

The EQ section of this video is really hard to see on the Kemper's screen. Kemper's Editor is now out in Rig Manager most recent public release (not beta). If you plan on using Kemper content, you may want to consider using the Editor instead of the Kemper. Would be a lot easier to see.

This came at the right time for me! I have a 60W Tweed Blues Deville 410 which is great... until the kids go to bed. I got hold of Amplitube for bass since I don't have a bass amp but I decided to try using it for guitar for late night practices. Total $h!t show but a lot of the pointers in this video clearly point out my problem areas, especially the HP/LP tip. One thing that stood out to me was the use of EQ after the amp. This is something that's become a huge no-no for me when recording an actual tube amp. It robs the guitar/amp/cabinet of it's warmth, leaving it with a colder, more digital tone. Is this just less of a concern with sims? Typically, if I want to bring it out in the mix, I apply a harmonic exciter, accentuating the highs. If it's a little too hot, I apply tube or even tape saturation, re-purposing the unnecessary highs. Punch? Add compression with attack. In the past, Parametric EQ was my hammer and every problem was a nail. Now, I'm conditioned to hit the breaks every time it comes up. =D Thanks for everything, Rhett!

One thing I like to do with the kemper when playing through a real can via monitor/power amp out is to mess around with “sag” and “tube shape” under the “amplifier” section. You can add a bit of squish and resistance to it and it makes a huge difference to me and feels like I’m really interacting with the whole setup while playing

Add your favorite overdrive pedal or distortion or fuzz in front of your amp block. It helps with the feel and for me the sound. With the helix put it in the loop though not in the front.

The "Pride (In the Name of Love)" riff during the pre-/post-amp delay and reverb demo was amazing. I do really like how those two effects sound in front of the amp, although it sounds good either way. The grit that comes onto the tails and repeats from running into the preamp is an oft-overlooked part of the tone. Pete Thorn did a great video about EVH's use of the Echoplex delay into the front of his Plexi and how that's the key to really nailing the sound of the riffs (aside from practicing your butt off to get the tempo and the notes right, of course).

Spent some time just applying some of the things that you have mentioned in this video. Really helped me clean up my tones on my Helix. I normally use a parametric EQ to make a few narrow cuts in areas that I felt were really harsh. Really great stuff!

Great video Rhett, another thing you can do which I do is adjust the sag in the amp, that will have more of an effect to the feel than sound but you can hear and feel the difference, if you want more of a spongy feel this is a good way to do it.

The thing I’m always wondering is how come these amp models do not intrinsically include compression & hpf/lpf. It’s weird to me that these supposedly « on the spot » models do not replicate these components of the sound. Am I missing something ? Great informative video as usual Rhett!
@seanc2550
4 жыл бұрын
Because it all has to do with what sound your going for. The amp settings are pretty decent stock. However where a lot of people get confused with modellers is amp in the room feel/sound vs amp in an isolated control room. I can almost guarantee there hasn't been an album recorded without high/low pass, and compression. This is what the Helix does. You choose your mic, mic distance, early reflections among a host of other things. So to pre-emptively compress or cut signal with no information as to what the end user will doing is rather useless. Yes they are complicated but in my mind it is much much easier than trying to midi wire a board and program a midi controller. I can have a live use patch for most of what I play in around an hour or 2. It takes that long for most people to figure out where to place there pedals on a board.

They are set to give a signal that is the same as you get in a studio. The sound from 1” away. This includes proximity effect that boosts the low end and high frequencies that are very directional and only heard if you stick your ear right in front of the speaker. The studio tracks are given these cuts as are the mics feeding the PA by the engineer... the modelling is realistic but requires the engineers knowledge. The latest Helix firmware defaults do include default cuts.

So with my Axe FX setup I was working under the impression that models of the amps already have the frequency range to match what the amp its copying has. No need to go in and carve out more with high/low cut. Sure, do it to create and shape the tone you want but not to match the sound of the amp. On the Axe FX they have room reverb built into the cab block. You can dial in as much or as little as you'd like. Including things like room size, reflections, and dampening. This completely separate from reverb and delay blocks that can be added anywhere in the chain. Nice opening btw, looked and sounded great.

FYI, regarding low cut, the lowest note on a guitar in standard tuning and A=440 Hz is E2 (open 6th string), which has a fundamental frequency of about 82 Hz. The lowest note on a 4-string bass is E1, 41 Hz (an octave lower). For completeness: the open 1st string is E4, about 330 Hz. If you go up 24 frets from there, you're at E6, 1319 Hz. So the range on a modern electric guitar is about 80 to 1300 Hz. Above that you're getting overtones/harmonics.
@TheDilligan

Here's another trick: If you like spring reverbs and you want it to sound like a real spring tank inside an amp, put the reverb BEFORE the preamp in your chain. On amps, like Fender Blackface, the reverb is part of the preamp section and does get distorted with drive. So even though you may put your plate and hall reverbs post pre-amp, stick your spring reverb before the pre-amp. It can get dirty and horrible if you are driving the amp, but the same is true for a real amp.

I've got a question for you regarding high and low pass filter settings Typically I'm playing my guitar in standard 440hz tuning, currently my guitar is a half step down and the low E flat string is this playing at 78 hz on the chromatic tuner. so why would we want to put a filter above what that bass frequency is? I feel like we would be relying on harmonics alone and not the actual parent frequency which would take away from the actual sound on its own but perhaps wouldn't be as lost in the mix???

Yeah mic technique used to make the IR makes a world of difference on even the same speaker. Good IR packs give you lots of mic, placement, distance, and angle options for each speaker and cab combo. I've done all thes tricks. They matter less if you are using a modeller into an amp, Which I wouldn't do with a helix or Kemper. but The Boss GT1000 has an output select feature that allows it to reshape an amp. So you can model an amp, plug into a different amp and get a realistic in-the-room sound. In that situation, I let the real amp takes care of the filters and compression. But going directly into a PA, these tricks are very great. With a good model, it's not about making the model more realistic as much as pre-mixing your signal when it goes to a FRFR speaker at small gigs where someone isn't mixing for you.

Ya gotta be careful with that low cut if your playing extended range guitars. I play drop double b on one of my band's tracks, and drop double e on others. That's as low as 40hz, when drop tuning my 8 string. If you cut out 80hz and below you're only left with the overtones.

Added a hair of midrange around 800hz with a very wide q as well. Set another parametric eq going in with agressive, narrow cuts primarily in the low and low mids. Then changed the effects chain to have the "fx" block come after the amp. Used a limiter instead of a compressor since it had more tweakability vs the compressors. Set the ratio super low, like 2:1 or lower. Slow attack, 30ms+, fast release, 30-40ms, and let the threshold be adjustable from the fx knob on the amp. This drastically transformed the katana for me. I'd take it over many budget tube amps now. Pretty wild how much simple eq and compression can do to your sound.

Hey Rhett, question. When I click the link to get the patches used in this vid it gives me an error. I’m specifically looking for that second/third tone played on the single hum bucker blue guitar. Where could I find that preset?

Great video. Very helpful. Loved the tones. Wish I could have those tones as close as possible for my PODGO.

I don't understand how can you eq the 80hz freqency and 25khz if you already cut at 80hz and 10khz in the first place...

how to make your tube amp more like the real thing( a vintage tone monster): 1.swap the crappy chinese speaker to alnico (150$-300$) 2.swap the first crappy russian preamp tube to vintage used rca/ge/mullard (under 100$) 3.that's it! enjoy! no updates no learning curve no programming degree needed

Hey Rhett, love the channel. New subscriber. Found out who you are from Rick Beato’s channel. When I first saw the guitars that you’re playing my first thought was “Wow”...reminded me of old 60s 3.. Rickenbacker’s. Novo guitars I’m not familiar with ...yet. My regulars are a couple of 80s guitars built in San Dimas CA. Anyways love your guitars...they scream Play the f@“$ out of me, Content is very cool..inserting. Guitars and equipment I’m not familiar with.

We musicians can get anal about gear in general. Reality .....your audience doesn't know the difference . .....Talented musicians ( like you Rett) really don't need help from "gadgets" . Thanks for posting . Enjoy mostly the "on the road , getting to and reality of touring, playing gigs.....the good and not so good. :-)

I've got Helix LT awesome machine, however the one and only confusion for me is Global EQ cutting low and high frequencies in context of mixing... If we set on Helix global EQ to cut low and high frequencies like on your video should we still cut low and high frequencies while mixing (EQ in DAW) or not?? I guess yes as on Helix global EQ we're cutting only in order to match real amp cabinet sound?? But please correct me if I'm wrong 😜👍😉 Also what about IR's as IR's itself are cutting lows and highs so what I'm doing once using IR's I do bypass global EQ... How about you guys???

Has anyone been able to achieve post amp soft clipping on Helix/HX Stomp?

Thanks Rhett! You're killing it. I cant wait to get home and work on my hx stomp now. And that track was killer. Cool about the high pass and low pass too. I really noticed the low pass doing its thing. My best tip right now for using the stomp integrated with a board is to use midi control. I'm able to use all of my favorite strymon pedals and overdrives/fuzz and switch them all with a single button push.

You know, using that deluxe compressor and the high/low pass really made a HUGE difference. I was using the 5 band MESA EQ in the Helix before but I was able to get better results with the high/low pass. The compressor at the end, just as you described, really does add that slight "tubey" feel. Good stuff Mr. Shull!

I'll support you Brett Skullp. I pay your bills, indirectly.. technically speaking.. I pay for this channel and everything that's yours is mine.. I'm going to need to borrow my Skylark next weekend.

You are a humble guy bro. It may be the best quality any of us could wish for. Compressor? A guy gave me a Boss compressor about 20 years ago and said he didn't like pedals that didn't do anything. I had a nice guitar and rig and noticed a little difference but the more I played, the more I noticed it. I sold it and got a Keeley Compressor and it has been on 85% of the time. It's probably the sustain I like the most.

Rhett could you set up a Quad Cortex by Neural to function through a Fender Vibro King. Neural suggests it is best with a FRFR cab. After watching your video it seems it could probably be done. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Also I'll apply the same question to a Fractal Ax8 ii. Thank you!

We've been trying to use a PodGo for recording into a DAW and it sound's terrible (we tried amp and speakers cab sims both on and off). We can't figure out why it sounds so bad because on many demo videos it sounds great. This is also true using a Valeton GP-200 model pedal, sounds great on demos, but does not sound good recording. Any advice from anyone would be really appreciated as this is frustrating. Thanks. Phil NYC Area

I do not have a HX Stomp or a Kemper...all I have at my disposal currently is a Zoom Multistomp MS50g. I have been using it as my “amp” going direct...can I still use these same guidelines with my pedal? I can put several effects in a chain. I will need to wrap my head around that “high cut / low cut” thing though and even if the Multistomp has the capability. Great video, many thanks

What kind of soft cliping you put after the cabinet and EQ? A TS9 emulation?

I love compression first stage to smoothen my playing and to help hit the sweet spot of a modeled amp and stay there. A little roll of volume makes for subtle tone response. If an amp is modeled correctly it should have the natural compression when pushed. Totally agree with post compression use to get there, all an art. I was using the hi roll off on cabs starting at 6k but lately have gone as low as 3600hz.
