My step-father's Honda 6HP would not idle. After an hour of tinkering around with all the wrong angles (plugs, fuel filter, linkages, screws, etc.) and taking the carb apart, went online and found your video. Did exactly as you said. Once again, the engine purrs. Magic. Thanks for the excellent tip.

Appreciate that Man. Following your procedure, I solved idle and start problem on my Mercury 3.5hp outboard (Tohatsu made). They all use similar Keihin carburetors. The problem is that smaller engines use tiny hole in that jet and they got easily clogged. On my 3.5hp, I cleaned carburetor multiple times and didn't know the existence that particular hole. I had to use strand from copper wire to clean mine. Apparently Tohatsu 2.5/3.5hp outboards need frequent cleaning of that jet because the hole is just too tiny.

Thanks donyboy for this very helpful video! It solved my problem. As usual, my BF5 didn't start this spring, just like last year, and the year before, but instead of dropping $200 at the Honda dealer, I came across your video and gave it a try. Sure enough I pulled the jet and it was completely plugged. I cleaned it like you said, reinstalled it, and the motor started on the first try and has been running great all summer, starting on the first pull. The Honda repair guy told me the new motors are very efficient so the jets are smaller and have a tendency to plug up faster. An understatement! I'm pretty much doing everything I can except tucking the motor into bed at night. I buy fresh non-oxygenated gas each Spring, only keep about 3 gallons in the tank, close the tank vent when not using it, remove the gas line from the motor and run the engine dry if I'm leaving it set for more than a day, and run the correct amount of Mercury gas stabilizer in the gas. Can't do much more than that. Thanks for sharing your solution for clearing the plugged jet. I will just add a jet cleaning to the Fall winterization.

Legend! Just bought a BF8A which wasn’t running. After fixing a stuck float needle and fuel going everywhere (thanks to another video), it still would only idle on choke. Cleaned the idle jet just like shown (after cutting a corner on the first try and not sticking the wire brush in the jet!) and motor now works perfectly. The magic of KZitem..

Another recommendation from my part: Ensure that the choke works properly. If the wire gets caught up / the choke isn't fully inserted, you will encounter errors further down the road when you try to put a higher load on the engine - and your spark plugs will look like a mess :) Especially on those older engines, this can become an issue that silently creeps up on you and keeps getting worse bit by bit

Something you should be aware of especially with 2 strokes. You can get an overly rich running condition because the engine will draw in air from the exhaust that is rising inside the barrel. The engine does not know any better as you will lean it out. Then on the water the engine will be getting clean air and a leaner running condition. This is how it happens on older outboards. Ken

My engine (same model as the one you show) idles, but can't rev up. Only way i can increase the speed is by pulling the choke, using the accelerator makes it choke and die. The funny thing is that if I block the air-intake it manages to work well. Have cleaned all the jets and what have you (dismantled, cleaned and put together the whole carburator several times). Obviously the fuel/air mix is wrong, not getting enough fuel when trying to rev it. Any suggestion of wht could be wrong?

Great tip. I have just purchased a used 5 hp Honda like the one used in your video. It idles and runs for trolling just great. 2 issues. It always blows smoke like a 2 stoke when it first starts up. I had a shop change the oil and put in fresh gas in a new tank. The motor has almost no hours on it. Second and main issue. It runs rough at higher speeds. It seems never to really open up to full speed. The prop has some dings which I filed down. They were fairly small. Any ideas? Thanks.

HI I just bought a Honda 15 hp 4 stroke 2009 it runs quiet no problem. It starts perfect . The only issue is I tried for high rpm y half of the way of acceleration it had problem . I played with the choke at the same time it was running and it started to accelerate more for few seconds . The choke it's like loosed and doesn't stay where you want it to be it goes back to the same position. So playing with the choke helped the motor to accelerate more there's something happening with that? Also inside water leak when acceleration sorry of my grammar . Greeting from Puerto Rico

I have I believe this exact engine, runs great always. Only problem is that when it's been trolling for any long period of time "over an hour or more" when I put it into neutral it revs up high. I called the dealer and he said that's normal to rev up like so. Yet when it's cold and not running runs perfect. Any idea's on what might cause it to rev up? As I don't think the idle adjustment will fix the issue as it runs great when cold.
