I was only 11 when Daley Thompsons Decathlon came out on the speccy and never understood how my dad was so good at waggling the joystick and winning the 100meters.. he was defo a natural.

Back in the day, I spent ages sat in front of a computer screen waggling my knob. Not much has changed really, except I'm no longer playing Daley Thompson's decathlon.

I rewired an auto-fire to be an auto-waggle and I tested it with Go For Gold (budget re-release) and the character shot off the screen and kept reappearing on the left. Was very funny :)

Back in the day my joystick would stay hard and strong when waggled and I could play Daley Thompsons for hours. Now however, it leans to the right, fails to react to serious waggling and any gaming now relies on the loading times being even longer.

I made something similar from a thingyverse design a few years ago. I went together really well. I used one of the cheap chinese USB converters inside the case. It feels solid and good in the hand. My only complaint with it was difficulty finding the angles when playing games on emulators running on my PC. I've been thinking a bit on how to make something with a smoother transition when trying to hit the corners. The old Atari joysticks with the pads had to be pushed less to create the lever angle as the pads seemed to be much closer together than on the Sanwa microswitched type so when you did for an example a sweep from moving forward on the screen to jumping at an angle up onto a platform it felt easier to do. Not sure if thats a clear explaination.

This would probably add to cost but: you could use quick disconnects for everything, including the joystick (if you get something like a Seimitsu style with fastener type or the 5 pin connector thing). ...and going by that route you could fit a DB9 in there (with Borne connectors no less), so it's just a matter of getting the extension cable to play or the tester whenever needed.
