Thanks so much! I haven't been to find the air pots in the US and this is great that i don't have to and i can just reuse the pots i already have. :)

The presumption is that your roots will air prune. This is not always the case. In humid environments, the roots do not prune well. It takes much larger holes and more of them to air prune roots, and even then if humidity is high, the tips of the roots won't dry out enough to air prune. HOWEVER, roots can 'sun prune' meaning the tips of the roots exposed to the sun will die (not in all cases though).

Hey thanks for getting me started. It might not be the exact method I'll use but I dig how it works now. Appreciate it!

Thanks for sharing this idea. Have you thought about extending this idea to make a DIY more like the commercial version? Make it from flat plastic (cut up coffee cans or 5 gallon cans) and reassemble with duct tape. While this requires more steps, it could result in a container that would allow easy removal of the plant when transplanting. It would also allow you to place the bottom an inch or so off the bottom more like the original.

+Paul Miller Hi Paul. Thanks for your feedback man I appreciate it. There's an Aussie version of the Air Pot design called Rocket Pot. The Rocket Pot works in the exact same fashion as an Air Pot but can be sourced much cheaper (it works via Air Pruning) :) some online outlets are having them on sale at the moment if you wanted to check them out. They work exceptionally well too!

If you use an electric soldering iron and taper down from the inside you get a good affect on the outside,

Hey great tip man! :D I never thought about using a soldering iron. It would probably work better than a stepped screw. The key to making this work effectively is having a smooth taper just like you see with regular air pots and using a solder would probably work best. Cheers for the idea.

That's def a good idea, i usually just use a leather awl to poke holes from the inside... either way, air pruning holes are the way to go

Hey, some are saying that these small holes will not prune like the bigger holes do. Can you refute that? Have you seen that even these small holes do the job? Thanks!

Yeah, I'm into this too, may be doing the simpler "air pruning" method - just large holes and landscape fabric. Your idea is not satisfying unless the holes were drilled way bigger, then a heat gun and a metal or wood funnel shape pushing from inside to create the bulge outward. I don't know if this air pot thing is better than the air pruning method with large holes. I have to investigate further. Thanks for sharing.

po3tik1 Thanks for a gracious reply. After viewing more videos on better pots I've concluded thus far that larger holes may be better but not so large that soil would likely fall through, so maybe 1/2 to 3/4 inch holes easily drilled would not need landscape fabric as much larger holes would. I've also heard that uncontoured holes, that is flat holes without pushing toward the outside as a guide for the roots, are just as worthy as contoured holes, as the plants are so sensitive they know the hole exists and is drawn to it even without contours. Contoured holes are superfluous is what I have heard; I suppose one would have to test both methods and look at the root results to determine which is more efficient. In any case, your video has added some fuel to these exciting options for best potting methods. Thanks again, ciao.

I did this filled it with soil and put a seed in every hole but nothing happened.

+James Needham You don't put a seed into every hole James :) you use it like a regular pot (just one plant). When the roots grow downwards they will try to exit out the holes (as long as they're big enough) at which point they will be air-pruned. The plants natural response will be to grow more roots and this is how the air pots work.

i used a 4mm metal drill bit for the holes (i found this size hole to be a good size for my own home made compost mix to not fall out or block the holes too much) i did find that when watering it was best to give a really good soak once the pot was dry in a bucket as the water/food wood run out, in comparison to the pots i didn't put holes in the roots were noticeably more vigorous when i checked at the end of the growing season, it is something i will continue to experiment with, overall I'm sure it will make a difference long term, I've over wintered some chilli plants in my house using homemade aerated pots and haven't had any problems either so far (fingers crossed)

This is not a good way to make a air pot. First of all get a drill bit instead of drilling a screw in your leg. For get this air pot method and just use a laundry basket and a mesh gym bag. I have found both items at a dollar mart or every thing a dollar store. So just put the mesh bag in the basket and fill with medium. Pretty simple.
