I've been living off-grid for years. Built my house with battery powered tools. Works fine. It's the expensive batteries that hurt the most. Last thing I have to install is the wind turbine.

looks like a very simple connector, just the sequencing is the trick to learn

It's a simple connector, but doing it right is important, so please, please do NOT take this video as instruction...

I own an MC cripper purely for clamping new floppy power connectors (and A600 leds)😁

Could we have a tour of your solar system, including the panels? As much as I'd hate to take a break from Amiga stuff, I'm just curious.

(+) connects to (-) in a series string between panels so using the label/trace to identify polarity does not work. I trust that that confuses.

Crimping on to the plastic would mean that it could loosen with heat. I would have thought the next part up would be crimped on to just the wire.

Yes, exacly. The contact is to be crimped ONLY to the stranded wire. And it has to be tinned wire for safety reasons. You will find all the details on the Stäubli home page (the inventor of the MC4 and enhanced MC4 connectors).

@TLang-el6sk it is crimped to the stranded i use the shielding as girth as it would just rip the wires

Hello Chris, I really like your restoration videos. But here, regarding the Stäubli MC4 connectors, I have some points to correct: First, the connectors are not meant to be used with solid core wires. Use tinned stranded wires according to IEC60228 class 5 or 6, so the typical solar cables. Second, the crimping style you showed is completely wrong. The wires must not be drilled and folded over, the insulation must not be crimped. And a cosmetic remark: You mixed up males and females. The hollow (bigger) contact is the female, not the male. The style of the housing is not relevant here. You will find all three points in the Stäubli assembly intructions and flyers. Doing the assembly right is important due to the relatively high currents. Especially when crimping the insulation you will lose a lot of contact surface and will weaken the crimp due to the soft insulation, so the crimp will most likely not be gas tight...

Mine works great. Seals. Water tight. And i have stranded wire

Be sure you only use stabuli brand connectors. All others are imitation, and will have mating issues.
