Motivation at the half of the process
@AlexKnauth
5 жыл бұрын
Lack of full fretboard familiarity is probably one of mine. However that seems related to another barrier that I have. I can arrange in the keys of G and C, and their relative minors Em and Am, staying within the first 6 or so frets, but if a piece goes temporarily outside of one of those keys, or requires a note higher on the fretboard than fret 6, I often get lost. This might be related to the way I "hear" the melody. I don't really hear the melody notes as notes by themselves, but only within harmonies. If I can't hear it relative to a chord I can find easily, then I have trouble finding it on the fretboard, and have trouble remembering where it is on the fretboard once I do find it. There needs to be a way to place it relative to something else to make it easy to find, and for my first arrangements so far that has only been relative the standard chords in the keys of G and C. I need to find an alternative set of anchor points, maybe, to hang everything else off of

It's tough for me because even though I have very good technical skills, I don't know a lot of chords and I don't have very good intuition of the fretboard. I'm also pretty ambitious with the songs I want to arrange.
@BeyondTheGuitarAcademy
3 жыл бұрын
It's ok to be ambitious with the songs you want to arrange - but at the right time. Give yourself permission to start with some simple tunes. Just like when we first start playing guitar, we might be ambitious with the songs we want to play - but we know we can't jump straight into the super technical stuff immediately, we have to work up to it. As far as not knowing a lot of chords, that's where my Fretboard Freedom training comes in (it's free, link in description). It teaches you how to build chords rather than having to memorize a bunch of chords

I appreciate the encouragement, which compelled me to tackle "Come By The Hills" for solo guitar. I did a nice, simple arrangement with the chords and melody, but wanted a second time through with arpeggios, so there I cheated a little. I didn't have confidence in my ability to do a respectable job of creating the melody with arpeggios, so I "borrowed" someone else's arrangement done that way, transposed it down a step from E to D, and that became my second stanza. Now I'm working on playing that arrangement with Ashokan Farewell as a medley:-)

For the 1st and 2nd barriers, I was lucky one of my friends was a really chill classical guitar player. As he helped me get started, he was able to make simple things sound just as good as complicated things, and he seems to have a skill for guiding the next step without making it overwhelming. For Guitar, but also for Math and CS tutoring. However, I think there's another barrier that I seem to be hitting now... every arrangement I've done so far has been in either G or C, or their relative minors Em and Am. Whenever a piece wants to go outside of one of those keys even temporarily, I'm lost. In addition, I have trouble playing melodies up the fretboard higher than 6 frets. Equipment. Money. Time. these are the only barriers. the rest are personally obstructive. most people, play too fast OR want to play FASTER than they can/should. others don't exercise while doing boring stuff like watching TV/movies/audio stuff.... the only other personal barrier, is incentive. being capable, being able or being allowed to make music, isn't enough, the DRIVE is the only motivation you need. lots of people give up because they want instant gratification and don't want to spend 10 years trying and failing all the while getting better. i will probably reply to this if i dislike your advice mr video man.

i can help anybody arrange AN ALREADY EXISTING SONG because the work has been done. find the chords online/in books, learn them and the order. play them, learn the song. learn the song first. always learn the song first. second, play the song to yourself to a metronome (tempo click) and experience the urgency to hit every note at the right time. One thing too many people have a misconception of, is that musicians who write music, aren't copy/pasting from other songs, they know other songs in order to gain the skills needed for the playstyle they are developing. all too often it annoys me when someone is playing a popular song and a smartass pretends that it's okay to expect a jukebox performance and complain about songs with gaps or songs that aren't available. learn your songs before rearranging them. use the basic note wheel (identifying steps and half steps made easy). music is more than just where to put your fingers. it's timing, it's memory it's maths it's science, everything about playing an instrument encompasses most of the human experience. it's sad, it's happy, it can trap you or free you, it's comforting it's fearful, it's a rush and it's draining. it's not like normal work, it takes literal dedication since there aren't "open calls for bands" to envigorate creativity. motivation is lost and the first 3 real hurdles actually halt a lot of progress. the first song i changed, was simply nothing more than neccessity, the vocals were too high and i couldn't open the song without exceeding my limit high or low, so i changed the key and hardly anybody notices because 1-2 steps difference could just be bad room acoustics or they're too drunk to realise. changing, rearranging songs, is NOT hard. it's lengthy and it can't be expected to be quick or overnight. there was a song i rearranged which had like at least 8 note switches, into one single chord, i changed the tempo, kept the lyrics and feel, tried to seperate it from the original and i think the single chord does a brilliant job, and it plays all the way through never really going away...... now, i know that some finger positions and some smartass music theory pureist is gonna tell me it has 5 chord changes since this certain ConFingerAtion is a CMajb3rd and the change is an A7Min5th and i can't be arse with that shit..... trust me, i chose a Dm and it is fine. the only thing you gotta do for the song i changed is use your little finger as a "bass" note and then open the e string near the end of the phrase. my point is, don't get stuck with music theory, go with your head and your gut..... do you like it? then record that shit PRONTO!
