Alicia you rang my bell once again. As you know I’ve been using a green screen for a while now. For the most part I shoot and collect hopefully usable video backgrounds when I see an opportunity. Sometimes I use a still shot without people or anything that should be moving. The storyblock backgrounds you used were stunning so now I have a new source. Your laborious setup and takedown of lights, greenscreen and studios needs would cause me to slash my wrists! I’m so pleased to have a permanent setup in my apartment. Since I gravitate to doing news or legal interviews my scripting is usually in my head. However doing other videos or vlogs you’ve reinforced my failings to forget needed shots. A beginning and a middle is awkward without a simple ending. Trying to do an ending after you’re home is messy. I’ve forgotten a time or two and then that green screen video I shot at the location is a Godsend. I simply put the same clothes on and Im back in business. I did pick up on a few subtile tips from you that may have been unintended. I must admit I’m somewhat lazy and love any and all hacks and shortcuts. Also now that you’ve learned the power of the green screen, you will not let it collect dust. Find a place to keep it hanging smooth. You don’t want fold marks on it. Last but not least, lose the pants! You don’t need them and I adore the eye candy! Thank you again for another great instructional video!

#2 tip - Lighting - SO important!! You get it right! I am amazed at how many big subscriber youtubers are sitting in the dark and their videos look, well....terrible. I guess they think it's cool? Artistic? On the lighting note, FotodioX makes a "Flapjack" light that is incredible!! They are more expensive than the softbox lights, but so much more practical. They can even be battery powered giving you far more flexibility. Put them on a stand, turn them on - set your K value and you're done!

Haha yes that dark moody look is quite popular.. I just happen to prefer the bright and clean look! I will check that light out! Sounds interesting 💡

Great tips! I always forget white balance (actually I'm too lazy to deal with it) and I always regret it. I just bought a white card on Amazon, costs about $13.00.

I have been following you and your channel since 2015 (I discovered you from Secure Ninja TV). I have been a huge fan of yours since that time. Anyways your new video just popped up in my notification, and I just wanted to say Hi to you. Hope you are safe during this crisis moment. God Bless You. Peace.

Dang Alicia I wish I would have watched this before making my last video! Excellent tips! (Brian traipsing around the house lol) I really went crazy with the M50 and Sigma which is great at the cinematic stuff. Check out the mysterious ending. I really need to focus more on white balance and lighting. Cheers!

Hi Alicia! Love your videos. I notice that you like to use Prime lenses (fixed mm) instead of zoom lenses. Can you share your thoughts on that? I do know that prime lenses are more affordable and better quality than the other lenses. Please give us some sharing tips. If I were to invest in a prime lens for vlogging, which lens do you recommend?

Thanks!! I only started to recently.. so just the last 2 or 3 sit down shots. Prior to that I used the canon 18-135 EF at about 25mm, but not with the large aperture like the Sigma

A question about tip one. I assume then that you script your videos. You never glance down or to the side. So, where is your script? Also, you have a good sense of when to break eye contact with the camera even if it's just for a moment. Could you talk about that? Thank you in advance!

I don’t script all of my videos but when I do I either have it printed out, or I just grab lines from my computer and memorize them. I’ve tried a teleprompter before just to grab the lines but I don’t actually read them from there.. Honestly I have a weird ability to memorize, but the edit points and B Roll breaks are a huge part of making it work because I never have to memorize much at a time.. hope that helps!

Love the videos. All of your videos are very informative and helpful. I do have a question about getting a blurry background. My little office space is 9x7.5 and my desk takes up 2 feet from the wall so I have a small space to use. How can i place my camera to not be so close to the lens and get that blurry background? I know the question can sound silly as I am extremely new to this.

That's ok! It can be tough in a small space, but the most important thing is using a lens with a large aperture. What kind of camera are you using? It's ok to be close to the lens, but definitely put distance between you and the background as much as possible..
