Spot on. My 181k (delivery miles to Volvo owners) benefits from quality oil eg Shell, OEM oil/air/pollen/fuel/turbo filters every quarter and yearly fluid changes in both the front and rear diffs as well as transfer box. In addition the auto gear box is serviced annually with fresh fluid and filter etc. Over the top? Maybe, but I like to think it makes a difference, however, the peace of mind it gives me is priceless! Keep up the great content and interesting information. In case you’re wondering it’s not a Volvo.....yet!

Firstly there is no problem with the cambelt at all on these engines, its very robust and reinforced with Kevlar and change interval is at the 108000 mile service or 10 years which ever comes first. It is completely safe to follow this service procedure which volvo recommends. This car should have had a volvo cambelt change about 3 years ago due to the low mileage. Now yes cambelts can break but the cause is the AUX Belt failing and getting tangled in the cam belt so the attention must go on this problem not the cambelt. In 2007 volvo switched to a thinner narrower Aux belt , and from about 2009 to 2013 they tried 2 or 3 fixes via recalls and altered the change interval of the Aux belt to 54000 miles ( Previously 108000 miles with the belt) this was the cure... what is vital is that the Aux BELT is changed every 54000 miles and at every cambelt change as previously. Always use the genuine volvo belt ! MILES are the crucial thing NOT age of the belt but it will be changed with the cambelt at 10 years if you do low miles. Whilst on the subject , the water pump is rock solid they never fail , ( Unless they are non volvo then YES they will fail sooner or later ) I have seen so many un educated mechanics take off a volvo water pump when doing a cam belt and put it in the bin and fit a cheap quality non volvo one which WILL fail sometime in the near future . All that is needed is to check the spindle for play and smoothness and coolant leaks. I have been working on these engines since they were introduced in 1990 in the 960 I have NEVER come across a faulty one yet. Another point, oil change interval volvo servicing is every 18,000 miles and as long as you use the CORRECT oil (Castrol Edge 0w/30 ) it easily does the job for the 18000 miles, It is expensive oil you are wasting your money changing it sooner.

I have a 2009 v70 d5 2.4 with 78 k on the clock and it runs like a new one as I have a year old ford as well and I would say there's no running difference because my Volvo is so well looked after .I'm going to change the transmission oil my self in the spring by giving it a gradual flush over a few weeks , I've just gave it a carbon clean yesterday I don't know if it was needed but I had it done anyway and I had the cam belt changed December 16th with a full service done at the same time and I put a full set of breaks on last winter and there still like new . I only do long drives in the Volvo but make sure it's drove at least twice a week for at least an hour each time as fast as I can on the motor way . Absolutely mint car I'm the second owner, came with full Volvo service history and everything it should have in full working order with a tail hitch to boot . The car drives like a dream and has a shit load of grunt .

I own a B5244t5 S60, currently have 226 000 kms, have it since it had 62800 km. Full synth oil every 20 000 kms works just fine. Manufacturer gives up every 30 000 (that's too much). Driving to max 2000-2500 rpm when the oil is cold is much more important.

As for the gearbox, and not driving it hard - These are big, powerful engines - They can take a hard drive lol obviously not ASBO all day every day but they are made to last and driving it hard or spirited is no problem - You never mentioned the DPF, this can be an issue if you're constantly doing short journeys, you NEED to take it on a motorway run at least once a week - Also the geartronic boxes are sold as sealed for life by VOLVO but anyone who knows anything will tell you that you absolutely should get them flushed!! If the box goes you're gonna be paying a fucking lot to get a new box in there. Mine is currently on 112,000 ish miles and drives amazing - Got the Michelin PS4's on there recently too and it has transformed the car

volvo have never said the auto gearbox is sealed for life , There is an optional service schedule for it ! Change the oil at the 72000 miles for peace of mind or 36000 miles if the gearbox gets hard use with towing or taxi work according to the volvo service schedule

Volvo state 115 k or 10 years which ever comes 1st for cambelt with full kit change... under normal conditions they are very strong as u said reccomend under seal or oiling via pressure machine to keep rust free mine is a 07 plate D5 on 77k full history.. also recommend a dose of Stanadyne performance fuel additive brilliant stuff around 80 ml for 31 litres of fuel protects the system injectors the works.... this is made by the company who make the injectors best on the market instant difference...

Hi there, I have a 2008 Volvo S80 3.2 with 155k miles in United States. I'm changing all 6 spark plugs, 2 control arms, Coolant/Radiator hoses (Upper and Lower) and then Power steering rack and pinion as per the repair dealer guy. What else should i change or pay attention to? I guess the car doesn't have any timing belt right? So, what other engine component should i focus on to keep it driving and cross 200k miles. Also, my dad drives it which is around 20 miles daily in the city and that's it no highway runs

I have pretty much the same model - 2009 S80 with now 252 000km's on the clock and runs wonderfully. I've driven it myself for about 120 000km and haven't had any major repairs up to now with the exception of a steering rack, which is about 2000eur/1800pound/2200usd range when you get an OEM one (or about a third of this from a scrap yard, i've been told it pretty much can't be fixed/rebuilt). Someone already commented here about this, but in addition to the regular maintenance, you should do a transmission flush every 70 000 miles or so. One thing that kind of annoys me is that the leather quality on the seats wasn't up to par to audi or bmw or Mercedes, I'm thinking of having these redone by a local leather shop.

Was you ever worried about your timing chain going on the 1 series? Mines done 75,000 miles and I think the chain it starting to rattle slightly. I've read that the later models like mine (63 plate) get a rattle but shouldn't snap as it's a revised design, but it still always sits in the back of my mind knowing it was a common issue for so long with the N47 engines. Thanks
