So, Jeff, I was soooo proud of myself (designing my battery bank & surrounding safety systems), but- this was incredibly eye-opening! Almost every single wire run has multiple wire gauges installed, and, every single one needs a properly sized (nuisance tripping) fuse. NOW, I 'get' why a tired owner says "I'll add the fuse next weekend, when I get back." Which, never happens. Love the smoke show over 14AWG wire catching fire- very good footage.

Everyone of the don'ts spelled out in this video has been found on my houseboat due to my previous owner's incompetence. Never assume because everything works that it's wired safely. Great video

Another great video Jeff. Can you do a video on boat electrical earth/ground/neutral wiring? It's one thing I haven't seen properly (clearly) discussed anyway.

Best collection of boat wiring videos I have seen! Just bought new sailboat, and doing tons of electrical upgrades and rewiring. Still in R&D mode planning my circuit diagrams. I have watched multiple videos of your many times. Really enjoy the videos and hope you make your way to New Orleans for a seminar someday.

Jeff, can’t thank you for the amount of information, knowledge, abd experience you are sharing. I have a question regarding for my 28 feet boat from ‘79. I am planning to rewire the whole electrical cabeling soon. However, on my boat the engine is on bow with start battery next to it and house battery and DC panel is on stern. It is quite long distance (one way about 9 meter so full way about 18 meter) between alternator and house battery. In modern boats they usually placed next to each other in engine room. But in my case they are far away from each other and I think voltage drop on cable from alternator to house battery will be a lot. And probably I should use 2AWG cable for such application, without knowing my alternator output current for an engine from 79. I haven’t checked and measured yet. What do you recommend in such cases where distance is a lot? Huge thanks and please keep up this great work! Regards from Sweden Deniz

Great series. I was watching your episodes 1-12, but lost track. How can I watch them sequentially? I'm taking screenshot of the presentations so I can follow through while I work on my refit. I tried to get ABYC trained once but looks like it takes an act of Congress to do. My dc wiring on my boat (1984) is all original 10GA yellow/black, but there's no fuse box, and it's my goal to correct that. That's why I subscribed and get notifications, to enhance my knowledge. Thanks.

I've been getting into the houseboat world and working on designing my own large boat. I've noticed all the manufacturers of the big lake style boats appear to still use solid conductor (home) wiring for A/C. Could it be because these boats don't see rough waters or is there another reason?

A very useful video, has been very helpful in correcting past owners "cheap" fixes. However, are there not a lot of Euro built boats in the US ? Beneteau, Lagoon, Jenneau ? I currently have a 2005 Beneteau. I know two owners that imported Oysters into the US from the UK. As they were first registered in the UK they were built to the CE/IEC standard. Now on my Beneteau all the 12v positive wiring is red, and all the -ve black, which does seem to also be the ABYC standard. They have not bothered to colour code the separate feed wiring, everything from the panels is also red for positive. The 220/110V wiring is live Brown, the neutral is Blue, and all the grounding wiring is yellow/green. The separate grounding cabling is also yellow/green. I really think you should have pointed out the different US/EU standards to avoid confusion on imported boats. By the way, if a shock from 220V AC was fatal I would have been dead dozens of time.

Hi Jeff, thank you so much for all the info. I have one question that I’m struggling to find the answer to. If I have an inverter that outputs 10kw constant, but can output 14kw in short bursts, do I have to wire for 10kw or 14kw? Can wires that can handle 10kw handle 14kw for very short periods of time, say like when starting a hoover or something similar? Thank you so much for all your help.

I would follow the wiring chart in the manual. the wiring and the fuse size should be able to handle the bursts.

Wish you were in US. Bought a project boat and the electrical is a bit scary. Spaghetti and then some. I'm a General Maintenance Tech with a decent amount of electrical experience with both 120/240/480 and 12 volt. But boats scare me. Don't want to go boom.

Great video Jeff, what do you think of the digital switching coming out? I’ve seen it advertised on some new boats. They reduce the resistance of the circuit (no fuse), by implementing a programable circuit breaker (digital fuse). I’m thinking of things like Carlingtech’s CML: or EmpireBus by Raymarine. It seems to have offer some nice monitoring and control features not available with mechanical fuses. (That’s at the distribution level, there is still a fuse at the battery to the supply trunk).

Great videos Jeff....thanks for all the information. I have a question. I have a Microlog DMM-1 installed and I would like to install a Xantrex LinkLITE Battery Monitor. Is it possible to use the same shunt? can I have more than one monitoring devices sharing a shunt? thanks Michel

When you buy a Xantrex Linklite it comes with a shunt. You'll need to make sure that both shunts have the same rating to be compatible.

Love your videos but .... as a Brit I take issue on wire guage or should i say AWG -- American Wire Guage, somthing we do not use here especially as it is for solid conductors relates to the number of times a wire is processed to get it down to a particular size. Also you guys need to get up to speed on colours. Red and Black are purely for DC Brown is AC Live and blue is AC neutral.
