As someone who has matched paint for years, I offer the following tips to ensure you get the best color match possible A) NEVER bring your sample to a hardware store to get a quality match. If you want quality, go to your local paint store where theY have qualified staff. IF you want quick, go to Home Depot or Lowes. B) Make sure you pull your sample from an area of the wall that best represents the color you are trying to achieve. Several factors cause paint to fade. While pulling a sample from behind an object might seem clever, remember its been hidden from sunlight and smoke and other things that can cause the color to change. Bringing in a sample that doesn't match the actual color you're trying to touch up is frustrating to you and the person who just spent time matching your sample when you come back to have the color adjusted. C) Whenever possible, bring in a sample that is at least the size of a 50 cent piece. This allows the person doing the match to put some paint directly on your sample to ensure a high quality match. Contrary to popular belief, the computerized color eye used to match paint is not always accurate and may need some tweaking. D) Unless you know for a fact what manufacturer and what product was initially utilized and go to that same company to have the match done, there is a good possibility that while the color may match perfectly, the sheen does not. You may notice the difference when the lights are on and you look at it from different angles. Hope this helps. GOOD LUCK!!

Thanks for your info. For Australian users, Lowe's here is a menswear store only and Home Depot does not exist. DO take your sample to a hardware store - take it to Bunnings (Australia). All the other info sounds logical and useful 🙂

Hey Paul, maybe you can answer a question for me? We have plastic shutters that were painted with a spray paint that has been discontinued. Would like to match it with a roll/brush on paint. Can I take the shutter in to get it color matched or the cap from the empty spray can? Or a piece of door trim? Does the sample have to be thi and flat like this video shows?

The problem with removing a sample from behind the cover is it's never exposed to light. Over time paint will change color as it's exposed to light. Remember how beige office PC's turn yellow under florescent lights. Exposed painted walls changes too.

The tip you showed to get the sample from behind the plastic plate saved me so much time. Thank you!! I am just doing a small touchup to my kitchen wall and the wall uses a light tan colour. The difference in shade between the paint hidden by the plate and the part exposed to the elements is not noticeable in my case.

Hey thanks a lot for this. I just moved into a place the previous tenant left a HUGE black mark on the wall and I don't want to pester the landlord about it. He gave me permission to repaint, but a color match over that spot would do the trick perfectly. This was very helpful.

I always remove the plates prior to painting rather than trying to hand cut around them typically it is only 1 or 2 short screws 4 if its a larger size. And after removing the plates I normally can find one with enough painted sacrificial pained surface for a sample for matching of color

PS. I realized that taking a sample from behind a wall plate wasn’t a good idea. The paint matched the sample but was lighter than the colour of the wall I needed to touch up. The reason, for this is simple: a sample taken from behind a wall plate is somewhat protected from the elements and ages differently than the paint that is on the actual wall especially if you’re trying to match a colour of paint that is at least 10+ years old. I managed to get it looking good after a lot of dry rolling and feathering the new paint to blend with old.
