How to check Capacitor with a multimeter?
Multimeter setting: Insert Black probe at common Jack and Red probe at Voltage input terminal jack,
Identify the Capacitor symbol on the dial and turn the dial to that position,
The multimeter powers up and enters into Resistance mode first, press Shift button, the meter enters into Capacitance mode, We can see nanofarads (nF) marking appears on the display.
Precautions before testing capacitor:
Disconnect the power from the circuit and Discharge the capacitor by connecting 20KΩ, 5W resistor across the capacitor, Visually inspect for physical damages and bulges, and Disconnect the capacitor from the circuit.
Sometimes we can observe a small capacitance reading on open ended test probes, We must consider this capacitance value as zero. Otherwise use the Relative function to make the display value to zero.
It is highly advised not to touch the metal parts of the test leads,
Follow all safety procedures before taking the measurement,
If the component is in the circuit, the measurement could be affected, because of the other parallel components in the circuit. So it is advised to remove the Capacitor from the circuit to get accurate results.
In case of polarized capacitor, connect Black probe to Negative terminal, Red probe to Positive terminal of the capacitor, Keep the test leads connected for a few seconds to see the reading on the display. We must compare the marked value with the reading on the meter's display, in order to know whether the capacitor is ok or not.
In case of Non-polarized capacitors, we can connect the probes in either way.
Testing Capacitor by using Resistance mode:
This mode doesn't gives capacitance value, but we can differentiate between a good and bad capacitor.
Connect the probes to the capacitor terminals, capacitor starts charging, So the series of resistance values appears on the display and finally progresses towards "OL" reading, Now reverse the test leads, the capacitor starts discharging, So the resistance value keeps on decreasing. This type of action shows capacitor is OK.
We can also check Capacitor using Continuity mode and Diode test mode of the multimeter.
Manual Range: If we press the Range button, The meter enters into Manual range mode, and now the user needs to select the best range for his measurement.
It is to be noted that the higher the range we select the lower the accuracy in reading.
The auto range can be restored by continuously pressing the Range button for more than 2 seconds.
Hold Function: If we press the hold button with the meter still connected to the circuit, then the meter captures and locks the measurement on the display. So we can view the measurement after disconnecting the meter from the circuit.
