As someone who worked in a laboratory, the lack of calibration for greenhouse thermometers always annoyed me. And no instructions on placement to get the best out of them, so good job, you! Up there with explaining the difference between soap and detergent👍 Science this stuff! Temperature and weather obsessives rejoice! Yup, gonna have to get one (or more) of these little gadgets. I only wish they sold them in multipacks...

Good stuff. At the start I was going to comment by saying I have a SensorPush, but then I spotted the wee blue cube. I actually have two, one positioned under the bench in the greenhouse and another wrapped in a ziplock bag hiding inside an old but quite open birdhouse. I can therefore compare inside and outside temperatures very accurately. The annoying thing with the app though, is that you can’t see two sets of data side by side. One added bonus that you didn’t mention was that you can set high and low alarms, so that you will get a warning if the temps go below or above your setting. I’m planning on Using a big heater this year in the greenhouse, and I have used the data to accurately set the thermostat on the heater. Great channel, btw!

hmm 'Actual temperature' of air in a glass box and a moving power bulb could be expressed as a 3d gradient. Maybe several infrared cameras and software to sort out all the areas would do it? :) I think you made me realize the best way to measure my new greenhouse temp, is to walk in and see if I feel happy! Good perception. Thankyou for the thoughts.

There is an easy way to calibrate them, you fill a glass with ice cubes then add water up to the level of the top of the ice, put the thermometer into the middle of the glass making sure the bulb is submerged about 1 inch below the ice. The alcohol/mercury inside the tube should fall to ZERO degrees (not below, or above zero, it has to be resting at zero) so if it's not reading zero then you have to adjust the glass tube either up or down, so the next time you test it in the ice water, it should read zero degrees every single time.

Man, I setup a temporary greenhouse this past spring and the thermometers drove me nuts because I had to manually open it up to vent when it started getting to warm, problem was that I couldn't reliably tell what the temp was. Drove me crazy. Anyway, I like the idea of have a few a few in there in different areas to average them but your fancy graphing bluetooth option looks really 😎. BTW, I found you from the KZitem gardeners group on FB this morning, im glad you posted there ill be watching more of your stuff for sure!

Good teaching, as always, Eli. I just can’t find a shady spot in my greenhouse for a thermometer. Not that I’m going to use the greenhouse except for potting, until October. Still, before then, I’m going to go for the old-fashioned kind to compete with my round-dial.

You may be better taking an average of multiple values inside the greenhouse. As even your smart sensor could be affected by direct sun light or hotspots/cold spots. An average would give you a better ball park, the closer to the average all the reading values, means the sensors are more accurate or you have a good consistent temperature in the greenhouse.
@eliandkate

Yup exactly There is no way to get THE temperature. You need to know what you are needing a temperature for and working accordingly, including being aware of variances

Great video. I have an electronic one like you and noticed all the different readings depending on where I placed it. Great video, I’ll look for a soil thermometer next. I know you’re greenhouse isn’t heated, but do you have any tips on overwintering plants in the greenhouse like potted perennials? I got some on clearance this week but want to overwinter them until spring. I think they will do fine inside the greenhouse but any tips?
@eliandkate
4 жыл бұрын
I suppose it depends on the weather you guys have and how cold it gets over winter. Basically for me it’s going to be a bout avoiding the real drops to below freezing. I’ve seen plants get badly frost damaged even in the greenhouse so this year I plan to try bubble wrap as a way of insulating the greenhouse (I’ve heard it can make 5C difference - we’ll test that out), and fleece over the plants on the colder nights (and days). I haven’t really done much in winter yet as my last greenhouse was useless over winter and I’ve only had the Rhino for a couple of years. This year will be my first proper tester :)

I guess it's about working out what you need... is it accurate or is it consistent? For me, I realised it was more about working out a way to get consistent and reliable readings that I would work with over time.

Is the SensorPush reacting to direct sunlight on the sensor like other thermometer modes? Our greenhouse is reading 100*F already and I'm hoping our thermometer is either in the wrong place (attempting location 4 now) or calibrated improperly. If not we will only enjoy a couple months of the year with the greenhouse which would suck, construction was more a relationship test than marriage counseling would be 😆😆
@eliandkate
3 жыл бұрын
Yeah all thermometers (and even window autovents) will react to direct sunlight as it raises the temperature of anything it lights. Best bet is to keep thermometers in a shaded area. Mine is under a shelf so that it is out of the direct sun.

my greenhouse was built yesterday. I have 2 themometers (one wireless remote I can read in the house) In a foil covered polystyrene box with the north facing side completely open. A small usb fan blows ambient air into the box. even with both doors, 6 roof windows and 3 louvres fully open, they both read 30 degrees C. The full south roof is covered by sunshades. Too hot for me to go in there for more than a minute.

@eliandkate
11 күн бұрын
@@gemmaangelbarker6313 it depends on what yours growing Gemma. So you either ventilate more to cool it down or shut vents and windows to warm up. Have a look at what you are using it for and see what temperatures they like, then aim for that range. For example, between 20c and 25c for peppers ….
