My motivation for making this video was hearing over and over again throughout the years while educating others about working with chocolate is “I burned my chocolate in the microwave.”
It seems like melting chocolate in the microwave should be a simple task, and generally it is. But you do need an understanding of some important points about chocolate and how to best approach melting it in this way. Watch this video to increase your knowledge of some little-known facts about chocolate's components plus best practices so that no matter what chocolate you’re using, it never becomes a victim of the microwave!

Tips & Extras:
- The quantity I’m melting for demonstration is ½ cup (68 g) of couverture dark chocolate (other than the low-cocoa butter chocolate used in the side-by-side comparison).
- The microwave you see used in the video where the temperatures are taken for the specified lengths of time is a 1550-watt input/1000-watt output microwave. A microwave’s power is a factor in the lengths of time and frequency needed to heat the chocolate but the approach is the same.
