The water melts it, the alcohol lowers the freezing point, the soap (any will do) works as a surfactant. Once you remove the ice the cold air evaporates the moisture so there would not be any ice unless material was added to the area. Method I use on sidewalk and drive. Sweep/shovel off snow. Sweep surface and any bit of sun will warm surface sweep again-no more material to freeze. Sweep/shovel snow and let just a bit of sun warm ice, the bottom surface melts just a bit, use ice scraper and break ice, sweep. No matter the method the goal is the same. BTW that looked like about 1/2 cup of alcohol.

Simpler solution is “ luke warm water with a few drops of dish soap and Essential Oil of Peppermint “ i tried this and my front porch is dry, slip free and smells great lol.

@@Jay-dq6vu Yes even just hot water poured through ice to the surface will lift other ice. Why the essential oils? The idea is to change the freeze point, alcohol is much cheaper. Remove debris, sweep clean, cold air dries surface and problem solved. Hot water alone will even solve an ice damn issue on the roof or drive. I have to deal with a lot more than a set of front steps. The entire front walk in front of a building, an angled drive, a gated area and the roof of a building.

Alcohol is used in many defrosters especially the ones for locks.. the soap is just lowering the freezing point of the water which the isopropyl (rubbing alcohol) does also which is why it doesn’t refreeze unless the temp was to really drop low...

Not sure that the soap is much help but I do know the alcohol will definitely go a long way in helping out. Even a small amount of iso can reduce the freezing point of water to below freezing. Of course the hot water is doing the heavy lifting of removing the thick layer of ice already there but to give you an example I keep a spray bottle of iso in my car during the winter months to de-ice my windshield when it freezes and it works like a charm.

Thank you! I live in the mountains of southwestern Virginia and on the side of the road where the sun doesn't hit very much at all, on top of that I'm on a hill with a paved driveway. I shoveled it yesterday as good as I could for the heating oil truck to make delivery and even then it couldn't get up the driveway. Because it was rain, then ice then snow and the snow shovel got the snow off but not the ice.

Brilliant. The alcohol sticks to the soap. I feel dumb for not figuring this trick out on my own. You could use gasoline instead of alcohol if you wanted and it would work the same.
