How to mic a drumkit (9 mic setup)
Each mic has a very specific purpose:
1. KICK IN - or attack mic placed inside the kick drum to get the click/attack sound of the drum
2. KICK OUT - to get the low note or the sub part of the kick. Sometimes we place it away from the hole to get more muffled sound
3. SNARE TOP - to record the hit/attack of the snare drum. Not always three fingers apart, if the mic is closer it’ll sound darker (more low end) and vice versa.
4. SNARE BOTTOM - placed underneath the drum to get the snare sound which adds snap and brightness.
5. HI-HATS - Closer to the edge gives thinner sound, moving closer to the centre you’ll get heavier sound.
6. RACK TOM - directed towards hit to get accurate sound
7. FLOOR TOM - directed towards the hit and away from the snare
8. OVERHEADS - These mics are placed to capture the cymbals and overall high end of the drum kit. They create the stereo field for most part of the drum kit sound.
There’s no right or wrong way to do it you just have a find a way that you like and what works for you.
