The handles we used at Maersk Container Industry (Denmark) back in the late 90's had a set of assisting rollers directly in them, as well as a dial to control the current/feed rate. Having a welder with the slope down feature helps immensely. If the pool gets too big or hot, you just release the trigger for a second an continue. One thing to note for the beginner aluminium welder, is that you need to move the handle much faster than when welding steel. Oh, and it is absolutely essential that the material is as clean as possible. You don't want to turn your welder into a plasma cutter...

Great video Tim. As always, you have no unnecessary BS, just the good info. One thing that would help me - you talk about what to do if you "feel" the metal is getting too hot towards the end of a run - but for us newbies, we have no "feel"! What are the signs that things are getting too hot towards the end of a bead, that lets you know you need to be turning the amps down?

Great video! I'm exploring getting my first welder for welding aluminum structures that need to go in seawater; so having it be able to take a hard coat anodize is *critical*. Aside from the good instruction on the basics that are so well broken out into the various factors you need to control , in all my previous reading and video-watching, nobody had brought up that issue of different fillers behaving differently re taking anodizing (and I need to have GREAT anodize). You've no doubt just saved me from a potentially HUGE expensive mistake -- cutting all the parts, welding them, sending them off to be anodized -- and having it come back completely useless for putting in a marine environment -- not to mention then a huge amount of time wondering what went wrong! Big thanks!

I am in the process of building a 1959 GMC Grumman, it's an all-aluminum body that has over the years been cut up badly. The smallest of 9 different cuts is 8" x 3" up to 3' x 4'. Having tried NAP gas welding, stick aluminum welding and spool gun (I am very right-handed with a bad wrist, elbow and shoulder the spool gun couldn't work for me.) Talking about weld properties, I’ve found that a number of guys here on KZitem are using 5356 for automobile engine use. “It looks nicer than 4340”. Yes, it can, but you can’t really use it in places where temperatures run higher than about 150 degrees F. If it is, then at some point, the weld will fall apart.
@TimWelds
2 жыл бұрын
Definitely an important consideration. At temperature, reactions occur in that alloy that lead to really long precipitates which corrode like crazy and weaken the joint. Thanks Mel!

@@michaelchadwick3497 @Ian Kidd Definitely when welding aluminum You should always clean with Acetone and use a STAINLESS STEEL wire brush. Also you only want to brush in one direction when cleaning with your SS wire brush so you don't push or pull contaminants back into the aluminum. When it comes to aluminum, clean, clean, clean! Contaminants can cause porosity which can equal weak broken welds.

How thin can you weld aluminum with a spool gun?
@tonyioannoni4951
10 ай бұрын
Tim I think you are the one with the most comprehensive approach to dial in the machine, but why you started at 350 inch per minute, how do you pick the first number, why 350 inch per minute (amperage=wire speed?), I am using a Yeswelder 250-PRO, and 4043 filler material, to weld 1/8" thick 6061-T6 aluminum in a format of square tubing 2 inches, how do I pick the wire speed? Then I will be moving to 3/16" same alloy and format, then to 1/4" of thickness of 3 inch square tubing... Do I always start with selecting the wire speed, and is the wire speed correlation directly attributable to metal thickness or the type of alloy is also to take into consideration??
