A trick I picked up from watching a mix tutorial from Jaquire King (Kings of Leon, James Bay) is what I'm calling Kick/Snare/Glue.
It's basically parallel compression on a aux track that has the kick, snare, and bass sent to it.
You get the balance you want with the send faders and dial in some "gluing" compression, and then blend to taste with the original balance of the kick, snare, and bass guitar.
As you see in this series, I've added slight compression in little chunks as we built the mix. This technique helps you get to that pro sounding rhythm section a little bit easier.
The key is not to go crazy, but to just add a little magic to the drums and bass sound in the center of your stereo field.
Try it on your next mix and let me know in the comments below how it worked out!
