Loving your tutorials @8020BIM. Just a quick note in case you haven't found it already, you can mirror the purlins(beam system) onto the opposite side without losing parameters by switching to one of the horizontal planes first.

Hi there, thanks for the kind feedback - glad you are finding the turtorials enjoyable / informative. Yes, I am aware of the ability to mirror the purlins across the roof, but it can be a little tricky at times as the orientation of the purlins mostly need to be manually altered after the fact so they remain in the structural strong configuration. Didn't include it as I didn't want to confuse users within the tutorial. Thanks for flagging it all the same, appreciate it. All the best, Niall

I have found in previous experience that the purlins should not reference a separate reference plane, they should be on the same plane as the steelwork they are fixing to. this allows for structural nodes to properly align and snap and also helps when exporting to analysis software and for cutbacks to work nicely on drawings. this also applies to any bracing, keep the roof structure on a single reference plane and make use of z offsets for geometry alignment. we also generally model the first and last purlin separate from the beam system and create the beam system within that. this makes it easy to adjust end spacings.

Hi Nicholas, thanks for sharing your insights. I absolutely agree with all of the points listed above. Ideally I like to have the Underside of the Purlins placed directly onto the Top side of the primary steels as you have mentioned -The only caveat is from the setting out perspective should you need to make an allowance for cleat lengths, but for the sake of preservation of nodal connections in the design models that is a mere footnote. everything else is spot on, and in practice for a real building design beyond the tutorial example I have also found that manually placing the first and last purlin a necessity, not to mention any allowance for gutter depth to the inside of parapets etc.

This quickly cleared up several issues I've been having with beam systems. Really wish the initial and final beams could be added as an instance parameter of the systems. Sub'ed.

I agree, it is a nuisance to manually add them but a little extra control isn't necessarily a bad thing - a yes/no parameter with setout dimensions would be ideal. Thanks for the sub, glad you found value in the video, appreciate the feedback. Regards Niall

How would you suggest to deal with lapped purlins? Often we draw multiple beam systems for each span between supports but maybe you have a more efficient approach?

Hi Carepoint. Apologies, I did not see this comment until now. I do have a download portal in development for all tutorial models (apologies, small paywall in place to justfiy so many late nights to the wife!) www.buymeacoffee.com/8020BIM/e/23263 Let me know if you have any additional questions. Hi Ishan, There is a steel connections tab within Revit (2017 and above I believe) - I will be creating a detailed video on this topic in the near future, keep an eye out for it. Thanks for gettign in touch, Niall

Bit late to the party here,but is there a way to get the base file of this with the structural steel model so I can then progress along with the video?? or better again is there a tutorial on that...sorry but structural element of revit is something I never really explored much as all my projects were domestic so tend to only use masonry walls up until now.. really need to get to grips with it though as surely as I will have to trow up a kingspan shed sooner or later :P

Hi again Steo, I'll see if I can sort you out with the base file mate. Go to 8020bim.com and hit me up on the contacts page (quote your KZitem username) and I'll try get it over to you when I have a minute. I'm actually in the process of putting together a structural modelling course. Keep an eye out for it, will be resource and template heavy so plenty to get the teeth stuck into. Anyway, send me a message via the contact page on the website and I'll get you the file. Cheers, Niall

Can you please show how to model purlin over curved steel roof. Thanks in advance
@8020BIM
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ahmed. If it is a single curve on the roof (old barn style half cylinder) then the best thing to do would be place a single purlin as a beam at the centerline of the roof and use a Radial array for one half of the roof. Repeat on the opposite side. Hope this helps. Niall
