One of the most common question i see on the 3d printing forums is "how do i modify my 3d printers nozzle?" in this video i show how to shorten the length of a nozzle for my MonoPrice Select Mini and how to drill it for a larger 1mm nozzle size, along with a test print.
the OEM nozzles for my Monoprice select mini are $15 ea but i am too "thrifty" to spend $75 on this experiment... that is why i purchased 5 nozzles on amazon for about $10 ($2 ea) for this project and as far as i could tell the nozzles i purchased were very Well made! after cutting on them i could tell they were made from Half Hard brass (yes that is a thing).
The most important aspect of modifying 3d printer nozzles is making sure you maintain the squareness of the end and re-cut the guide chamfer to prevent clogging.
the only real problem i had in this modification is finding a way to hold the tiny little nozzles. using a lathe would have made the part more exact and square but i don't have a lathe small enough in my shop. so the next best approach is to set it up in the milling machine.
the first part is to make a fixture plate to actually hold the nozzle , then the modifications could begin. at the end of the video i show one of the modified nozzles on my monoprice select mini printing a single wall vase with a 1mm nozzle.... It worked perfectly!
I know there will be a few who complain about the fact that i was using a $25k machine for the modification of a $2 nozzle.... these modifications are not in the realm of everyone means but for those who are equipped (of have access) it is perfectly easy enough.
i am relatively new to 3d printing but i am learning quickly! here is a list to my growing 3d printing playlist:
