Thank you for this video. I bought this Abus lock on Amazon. It is like the one in your video except it doesn't have the holes for the bottle cage screws. I am thinking that I can drill my own holes because I would like to utilize both the strap and bolts. Very good video was helpful to help me understand cinching the strap with the included screws.

Thank you VERY MUCH for providing this instructional video. The video was excellent quality with clear, steady video enabling the viewer to see exactly what you are doing. There was no way in Hades that I would have been able to successfully install this holder onto the frame of my RadPower bike as the instructions included in the package were too small to see the detail necessary, and there is no text accompanying the line drawings to explain. Thank you!!!

Thank you for being analytical and explaining tour every step (it holds for all your videos :)). Although i have a question i can't find information anywhere. Where is the best mounting position? Where you placed it on your bike or in the vertical position where there is also a set of mounting screws? And by best i mean where there is less stress and fewer shocks for the whole system.

Thanks. :) That's a good question. On all my bikes, including my "gravel" (off-road) bike, I mounted it on the down tube. My lock is now about 15 years old and it works fine - and so do my bicycles. Would the seat tube be even better in terms of shocks to the lock? I'm not sure. But the down tube is perfectly fine in my experience. Relja

thanks so much for this video. Well done! Question for you? Is your lock the 6500/110 or the 6500/85? I'm trying to put my 6500/110 on my tube without using any holes for water bottle cage. The directions say not to tighten the Allen screws on the mount to the straps if you have the 110. If I don't tighten those Allen screws it doesn't seem to be holding good enough. Thanks again!

I wonder why my mount doesnt have any holes for the water bottle bosses? I can see the model number on your mount is same as mine.... D58292 wetter but I cant mount mine to the frames with bolts.... I dont think just the straps are sufficient for the weight of the 110, plus I put 3m paint protection film on the frames under where the straps wrap around to prevent friction rubbing in paint on frame

I got a bracket with the lock. But the bracket shown in this video was ordered separately - so I could conveniently use the same lock on the other bike. The original bracket was made of rubber and it had straps that are much more sturdy (rubber+nylon, very thick and wide). But it too came with bolt mounting holes. The good thing about straps is there are two - so you can notice one cracking and react in time to prevent loosing the lock. To sleep better, I would drill holes, place some wide M5 washers (to distribute the force and prevent causing any cracks on the bracket), and use some cut washers (like small springs) to prevent bolts from unscrewing under vibrations, without having to tighten them to some crazy torque. I'd do that primarily in order to make it more difficult to steal the bracket off the bike, but also to make the straps work less hard (and I suppose that would reduce any frame scratching by the straps). As I've shown in this video: kzitem.info/news/bejne/2Jut03xrcWqGo2k I don't shy away from "improving" stuff, in spite of any manufacturer recommendations. But everyone should use their own judgement, common sense, and do such stuff with full personal responsibility, of course. EDIT: the correct English name is probably a "split lock washer" - this is what I mean, what it looks like: i.ibb.co/GcDQwCx/split-lock-washer.jpg

Thank you very much friend... I bought an Abus 6500 and thanks to your video the installation was easy for me and I just wanted to ask you a question. In the care of the lock, is it recommended or for no reason to use wd40 in the links? I appreciate any help. Greetings from Chile. ✌🙂
@BikeGremlinUS
Жыл бұрын
Hi Carlos, Any light (not very thick, very viscous) oil seems to do a good job on the links. Liquid silicone spray works very nicely, as well as Motip PTFE spay. WD40 is a very light lubricant - and it doesn't keep things lubricated for a very long time. But it too should get the job done - you just need to apply it a bit more often than the "normal" lubes. It holds up very well for now. I ride the road bike anywhere, including the "gravel" roads, and haven't had any problems. Still, only after a few years can I really say if it's good and durable, or not. I've got a rubber bracket on my commuter bike, and it's been on the bike for almost a decade now - with no problems. We'll see about this one in the years to come.

It's the "standard" ("coarse pitch") thread - M5 x 0.8 mm. But that's frame dependent - not lock dependent. Here's my article on the most common bicycle thread sizes: bike.bikegremlin.com/2920/standard-bicycle-thread-sizes/

That's good however for those mounting it on a rear bike rack this wont work. The clamps that hold the lock in place on the mount pop open easily when riding on rocky terrain and the lock will fall out on the trail, never to be found. I recommend additional strap like a bungee.

A good question. :) I haven't tried it. Don't like the idea of having that weight on one fork leg (for ballance reasons, not for any big safety concerns). That aside, I suppose it would hold.

Yes. You can use straps only, or the bolts only. I used both to make stealing the lock holder more difficult (more time-consuming and confusing for any "borrowers").

While certainly durable, this install method is needlessly complicated. It’s like using a belt and suspenders. If you install the lock using the bottle cage bolts, you don’t need the straps. Simply pull the rubber base with the little flaps away from the lock holder and store with the straps for possible future use. The holder will attach fine just using the bolts that go into the bottle cage threads in the frame.
@BikeGremlinUS

I wanted to show two mounting methods. And I'm all for overengineering and having a backup of a backup in case a bolt, or a strap fails when I'm in the middle of nowhere (and run out of zip ties :) ). Also, for my use case, it makes stealing of the lock holder a more difficult job. Thought I had explained that in the video.
