Make sure EVERYTHING is on, camera, monitor, all AKS, etc., before plugging in any SDI BNC cables. If you’re using a Teradek make sure the Teradek is powered as well before implementing any SDI cables. When powering down, I usually unplug the BNC first, then power down monitor/Cam/AKS etc. I may be wrong on the power down, but I’m pretty sure that’s how everyone I know does it. Cheers.

@@danielkelaart The actual real problem is the grounding . Eitherway when a Dtap is pluged wrong way or when hotswapped battery . One pin touches befor the otherone . that is what grills the SDI. But still unplugging everytime is safer :) Cheers mate !

This whole problem only applies if you power both the accessories and camera off the same battery. If you power the monitor from separate batteries it literally doesn't matter when you plug in the SDI or any other cable or turn on and off stuff because there is no way to complete the circuit through the SDI.

Wrong again. If your SDI accessory is using batteries that don't have any grounding and you don't follow the procedure outlined by RED, then you may eventually find yourself with a major issue on-set. P-Tap/D-Tap connectors also don't use grounding and should be avoided at all costs. From RED: Make sure power is connected to the SDI accessory at all times before you connect the BNC to the camera. Ungrounded power from SDI accessories can damage the camera’s SDI port. To avoid this possible damage, attach the power source to the accessory before attaching it to the BNC cable. Also from RED: When possible, avoid using P-Tap (also known as D-Tap) cables to power accessories. To avoid damage when using P-Tap/D-Tap, it’s imperative that the connect/disconnect sequence is used.

The problem can only occur if the same V-mount battery is used to power both the camera and the monitor. If you use different batteries the order in which the devices are connected and turned On/Off does not matter at all.

If you have empty batteries nothing it's going to happen. Now, you have this possible scenario: 1. You're recording and the battery (Komodo or monitor) dies. According to a few KZitemrs this could be something to worry about (I really don't know). According to RED inside their page you can check the article called: "Preventing Damage to SDI Outputs". Which may be a bit confusing since they only refer the issue if the MONITOR loses power But it's a simple process called LIFO: Last In - First Out. You place the battery on the Komodo and your monitor (whatever order) and only then you can connect the SDI cable (no need to turn on the camera, is up to you. Regarding the monitor although it's not needed to do it, they advice to turn it on since there're a few monitor where you don't have a power status and you may plug there an empty battery). Then let's say you need to take a break... According to ARRI after you followed the LI (LAST IN) protocol, you don't need to worry about POWER IN or OFF your devices (Komodo, monitor or whatever accessory). NOW the problem that can happen here is that if the battery dies (discharged or something) you're not following the protocol. Since that's interpretated as the camera was disconnected from the power supply or viceversa. So, most people when they turn off the camera for a while they decide to power everything off (or at least the camera) and they unplug either the camera sdi port or the monitor (no need to disconnect both unless you finish your shooting day). This is basically what I got by watching multiple videos and reading PDFs haha

I use a regular 4K SDI and I'm totally fine. I heard it's even safer than using the 12G one. I only use canon batteries though and the monitor has its own battery too obviously. I'm not certain so correct me if this is a mistake.

The power on and off sequence is about grounding, if your monitor was connected via DTap, you would have blown your SDI as there is a power circuiting through one source and outputting to multiple devices. In this case you have wouldn’t have a grounding issues as there’s no unregulated power out coming from your camera battery.
