This was more the case on the old discussion forums. As someone who has struggled socially my entire life, the Internet was once a lifeline. Sadly, that is no longer the case. On Reddit today, it's all about the upvotes and downvotes and going into it expecting any kind of support is just going to end in trauma. Trauma subreddits are basically "trauma olympics" and they are about who can be dramatic enough to get the most upvotes. And if you're really, genuinely struggling, your likely to be downvoted.

It's interesting to hear this take on "selling your soul". Oversharing has never been a problem for me in my life and I never really view others sharing (what others might call) an excessive amount of information as "oversharing". I always just see it as them sharing the level of information at which they are most comfortable sharing with others. Like how we all like the thermostat at a certain temperature. We all have varying degrees of openness and how willing we are to share information with others. Not to mention it's (what we share online) all ENTIRELY optional. So whatever that person shares, they 100% decided to do it themselves. Their hand wasn't forced at all. Even for the biggest celebrities, nobody is REALLY demanding them to tell everyone how they decide which loaf of bread to buy on Saturday or expecting them to release an essay on why they broke up with so and so. Their followers aren't saying "tell me or I'm never going to support you again." I view individuals "selling their soul" as people who give up their individuality for the sake of attention, fame, money etc. Doing things like: regularly following trends, saying controversial things simply for a reaction, promoting products they don't care for, treating their supporters as being beneath them, making obnoxious Mr. Beast style thumbnails, lying/exaggerating to spur engagement, doing things they don't like just for attention, not even knowing what it is they like themselves etc. (assuming they did not regularly do these things before).
@Yoyoadventure

I agree that nobody is literally forcing another to “sell their soul.” While I agree there is no physical force acting upon people to sell their soul to the internet, there is plenty of evidence that supports the addictive nature of many social media platforms. A great book to read more about this is called “Outrage Machine” by Tobias Rose-Stockwell. The premise of the book highlights how the internet has altered the way we think and interact. To break away from this alteration is very difficult. Internet usage is addictive. Similar to other addictive substances, nobody forces the hand of those who use them; however, once the addictive thing is used often (to some degree) it takes more than just deciding, “Hey. I will no longer her use this.” Stopping the “selling” of our souls to the internet comes with side effects and takes hard work for many. For celebrities, social relevance is how they make money. Posting more and being outrageous will bring more attention. I only have a KZitem, and I understand how additive the other platforms are/can be. Although I don’t share the same experiences online as those using other highly additive platforms, I can empathize with the struggle to remove yourself from it. People experience FOMO, come to realize plenty about some of their online friendships, lose income, have to sit with their own thoughts, etc.

Very interesting. It reminds me of Harry potter for some reason. When Tom says that Ginny gave so much of her soul by writing in a diary (and overstating personal details about her life) that he was able to consume it and emerge in a physical form. It also reminds me of another KZitem who had been posting for around 5 years. She shared too much about herself imo, and was never careful about concealing her surroundings near her home. She apparently got stalked due to a fan finding out her address and showing up at her apartment and left KZitem

For some time, I started feeling like I was oversharing on my social media -- like even though my face isn't shown and I feel like it could be interesting for my audience, it started to feel "icky" when people would reply to things I felt that they had "no right to" (and I put quotation marks because I myself put it out there which gives them permission to comment). I signed out of my account on my phone for a while to wean myself off from the impulse to overshare. So now, I'm more mindful about the things I share out there.

Your personality is so just nice and comforting. Also I love that more people are pushing explicitly for not over sharing. I feel like some creators do that and it takes away from the video, especially when the title seems like a valuable enough topic to click on. It feels like some creators are trying to bring celebrity/stan culture onto KZitem and it’s going to make it hard to have conversations around actual content over personalities in the future if it continues. This video gave me some peace with that- I'm seeing I can get that the medium I'm communicating in is a finalized piece of art and that I can keep the ongoing struggles to myself as I continue to work through them and then speak on behalf of the things that I've processed. This video made a difference for me and I appreciate you greatly for it

Hi Lauren! It's been wonderful watching your videos trickle through my recommended these past few months. You definitely give me a lot to think about as I consider whether or not uploading youtube videos is something that aligns with my life thesis. You honestly perfectly addressed my fears in this video. I was worried the me who presents online and the me who presents to in person contacts would blend to a point where they are indistinguishable, and I wouldn't know who I was anymore. By treating the audience online as a separate acquaintance who you set boundaries with, like a normal relationship, one can begin to decide what is and isn't appropriate for what they reveal online. Can't say enough how much I've listening to your videos while gaming, and rewinding and watching when you start dropping knowledge bombs. You are truly a blessing.

It is crucial to understand the importance of not oversharing or perhaps being balanced and doing shadow work before making any video. I have seen people taking KZitem or other social media platforms to use their personal feelings as part of the content where they are being open to the world, but what they might get into is a total portal to unnecessary opinions they didn't even ask for in the first place. I remember doing it, not here but on other platforms, and I ended up feeling lost, alone, and confused after certain sharing that led me to a new type of problem I wasn't ready for. As I started doing more personal journalism, I understood the importance of keeping the balance between what is worth sharing and how to structure my ideas before even thinking of it. Thank you so much, Lauren, this video was excellent. I agree with you on everything, especially for the journals, keeping things separated so we can focus on what we really want to share and what we don't want to.

I liked how you presented this, I was listening closely throughout. I don’t vocalize myself online or offline often (I’ve been making an effort to speak up more for a year now, least online), but when I do, I sometimes overshare as an attempt to convey information or make friends/connections. Nothing deeply personal, but just putting “skin” in a conversation. That said, I have felt that I’ve “sold my soul” revealing maybe too personal of info to a good friend, even when they didn’t react badly to it. But I did regret telling them because crossing that boundary made me feel too transparent to the wrong person. And I don’t think it enriched our friendship either, it’s just that sharing it should have been saved for someone else. Besides that, having a small audience to me would be just that, like public speaking and to be about providing something to that audience firstly, that’s how I treat my (small) public audiences. It was a captivating video topic, thank you for sharing really.

There's this weird feeling of guilt about staying consistent with something you said in the past, like that idea of knowing yourself you talk about in problem with oversharing part. Which is a weird because opinions naturally grow and change as time goes on. Yet if someone's watching your stuff for the first time, that's the first impression of you. I know that's kind of vague for anyone reading this but just please know that's a normal feeling when making stuff or sharing you opinion on the internet to experience that dissonance for previous statements, that means your growing. Awesome video, there were some great points I didn't consider before, thanks for making it!

It's really helpful, it's always complicated to juggle between not wanting to disclose personal stuff while also being aware that being on social media is important for my career.

@AudeKonan, I can relate. It's important for the career. Urgh. But also, @lrnjulie has made me aware of my desire to use it as a means for fighting loneliness and a space for ranting. It's so helpful to be confronted with these truths in such a caring and intelligent way. Thanks Julie! ❤

i’ve always been private about my life, i usually talk about life stuff with good friends online in group chats, but i son’t overshare personal stuff, especially with random people never showed my face online either, was never a fan doing that. i prefer creating content in a way that utilizes my words and actions rather than body and face. this video feels reassuring since i’ve never overshared like that before

I was already sold with Calcifer as wallpaper and the maximalist decor in the back, but then you pulled out your notebook with the handwritten information and I immediately subscribed lol

I NEVER comment on videos but I just want to say thank you for the thought and effort put into this!! I have been wanting to start a channel for years, but am a very private person (don’t post on other social media sites like Twitter, etc). A way this video gave me a lot to think about when it comes to the purpose my channel would serve and what I’m willing or not willing to share. Thank you 😊

Thank you for your service. Lovely breakdown and the steps are very helpful. You said everything I’ve been saying to myself about oversharing and privacy on the internet. People don’t care about our issues. Only show the best and if you want to be vulnerable only tell minimal info and use it to connect with others.

This was really well done and was so informative. Seeing YT as a public speaking forum is just the understanding that I needed. Thank you!

That study measuring teenagers' Facebook posting regret- if my feedback was in the data, the results would be incredibly skewed. I'm straight up traumatized from the consequences of sharing too much on the internet.

Solid information, well-presented. In the early days of social media, I think I tended to overshare quite a bit; mostly because I didn't think about who my audience was.
