Took inspiration from the first part of the video to open the back of the watch. Instead of the stress ball, used one of the 3M picture hanging tapes (the adhesive end). Worked like a charm, and no scratches.

Thank you. I've finally been able to to remove the back. I wore thick leather gloves and finally had to resort to using a pair of vice grips on the needle nose pliers to exert the torque necessary to loosen the back. It had been secured by a watchsmith ; a very strong one! Finding one these days is like looking for super 8 tapes.

Well I owe YOU an apology - I thought this was dumb as hell... but it actually worked! I used the rubber ball, and previously NOTHING worked. I even soaked the watch overnight in liquid wrench (for removing old/tight/rusted parts), and still nothing. Rubber ball? Well, I had to really crank on it, but it actually came right off. Kudos. So yeah, before I put a negative review or a thumbs down, I'll at least TRY it, and lo and behold, it worked fantastic. KUDOS TO YOU!

Thank you for this! I was just able to open mine with pliers and have something to add: cover the plate with masking tape first to avoid scratches. Works like a charm. Also, placing it facedown on a non-slip mat (like a silicone kitchen trivet or silicone baking mat) makes it easier. Unfortunately, my watch is still broken but at least I didn't waste any money on a tool to open it :)

The needle-nosed pliers did the trick for me. Just be careful not to let them slip and scratch the back of your watch. I looked at using some dull-pointed scissors, but they seemed more likely to scratch the back. In my case, the nubby ends of the needle-nose pliers fit the notches on my watch nearly perfectly. I wouldn't have used this method on an expensive or heirloom watch, of course.

I opened mine with a Micrometer, the straight kind - not the circular kind. It's screwed on very tight but there are a lot of common tools you can use to open these. I would just put some silly putty on the watch, or plastic on the tips of the tool otherwise it might get scratched if you are using metal.
@LouisWinthorpe622
Жыл бұрын
Think you meant Vernier guage as they do a similar job to a micrometer but a micrometer's a different design and you would have one helluva hard time trying to take a watch caseback off with one. You'd probably have an easier time of it with a claw hammer or Wellington boot than you would with a micrometer. Whereas: a Vernier caliper; I can pretty much see where you're coming from. Way to fuck up a Vernier, though.

Have an old watch with a stainless steel back and no notches. I super glued a plastic bottle cap to the back, let it dry, and twisted it off. I pryed the cap off and used paint thinner based goof off to polish the glue off. I wouldn't risk doing this to a pricey watch, but if you have a pricey watch you probably have a tool.

Thanks a lot for this very useful hack! I have a question. The front of Fossil fs-4631 has a few parts that represent the hours and the stopwatch hands have come off. How can they be put back? I opened the back cover, removed the crown, but the blue metal board to which the parts showing the watches are attached looks wider than the sidewall of the watch, I couldn't remove it. Does the glass in front of the watch have to come off for this? In short, what is the way to do this?
