Yes, that always baffled me and still does. They know that lack of sleep is dangerous, and we aren't supposed to drive a car while tired, but surgeons and ER staff are scheduled for 48 to 72 hours shifts like it's some hazing or rite of passage. It needs to stop. There should also be a federally mandated 12 hour turnaround for all employees. Entertainment unions did this ages ago and without it, way too many companies schedule emolyess for what they call a "clopen" shift, where they close and open the next day, usually resulting in a max sleep time of 4 hours. Those people are often driving to and from work and the early morning hours are riddled with sleep deprivation induced car crashes on freeways. It's long overdue to allow people the time to go home, eat, sleep, shower, eat again and then head to work.

I am no longer waking up in the middle of the night. I slept until 6 AM today, getting up to pee is nonexistent. The edema in my left ankle is almost gone. This does nothing to help the insomniac who can't get to sleep because of fear and anxiety of being awake and the hyperarousal from the brain that keeps someone mentally alert at night despite being physically exhausted. You can do these sleep hygiene habits to facilitate a better sleep environment and prime you to sleep but you cannot force/will yourself to sleep if you do not have this underlying fear of being awake and desperation for sleep. The more effort you exert with the intention to fall asleep is counterproductive for the true insomnia where it is a matter of fear, panic and anxiety.

Solid video on sleep optimization. Here’s the quick recap of what Paul said you should (and shouldn’t) do to sleep better: - Cut back on coffee, weed, and alcohol. - Stay away from blue light before bed. - Stick to a consistent sleep schedule - same time to bed, same time up. - Get morning sunlight in your eyes. - Ground yourself - morning, throughout the day, and maybe even grab a grounding mat. - Shut off your wifi at night. - Eat clean, but avoid eating too close to bedtime. - Skip the heavy conversations, TV, social media, and your phone before bed. Do this consistently, and you’re going to sleep way better.

Hey Paul! Do you consume any fruits with dinner to help with your sleep? Like you said with keto people incorporating some carbs, I heard that loading most of your carbs towards dinner can help with the shuttling of tryptophan into the brain allowing more serotonin and melatonin to be produced. But then there’s also conflicting evidence showing that consuming too many carbs before bed can cause disruptions with sleep cycles and cause midnight disturbances.

@@-whackd when you don't drink or take drugs, you see how insidious and cult-like the push to do it really is, and I see that with coffee and caffeinated drinks too. It's so rare for us to encounter others who don't partake of booze, weed or coffee, it blows my mind. It does seem like almost everyone needs caffeine to wake up and function, and booze or weed to "unwind" from that, which all leads to crappy sleep. But when I was a kid, adults would have coffee after dinner and sleep just fine, which makes me wonder. Before I gave up coffee, if I had even one cup and it was after noon, it ruined my sleep. I wonder what changed.

I follow a regimented body weight workout routine and either walk/run/or ruck regularly. I began eating liver again and now I have much more energy during the day with no bouts of lightheadedness. However, Im having a hard time falling asleep, and my dreams are a little harder to remember. I usually remember 3-4 dreams a night and sometimes I have lucid dreams. But the liver has stopped that, maybe due to just having trouble falling asleep. Anyone able to help me?

So observant of you - thank you for sharing - my experience with beef liver is confusing (I am able to buy what they call ancestral beef with the organs blended in 30%), and about once a month that seems to be ok - I have the odd light headedness that you mention, BUT mine has come when I consumed the liver, in that blended way, more frequently - In the past I was consuming chicken liver with bacon, onion and mushrooms (which I seem to be able to eat, but I am still closely monitoring); the chicken liver did Not have the same affect. Not scientific, I need to make a journal and pin this all down. fwiw

As an anesthesiologist, I work in shifts (doing a lot of night shifts, too), most of the time in the hospital and operating room in arteficial light, surrounded by EMF... I've been suffering from sleep disturbances for quite a long time now... I do my best that I can, doing almost everything that you mention (I also have a grounding sheet at home, blue light blockers, candles, I wear orange glasses in the evening, I even use a wearable Nervus vagus stimulator at night etc). Do you have any other specific recommendations for people like me, working in shifts a lot of times?

Hi! I am doctor also and after 4 years with sleep problems, wakening to early, there was one thing that worked for me i take 300 mg of magnesium chloride 2 times a Day and sometimes 3 times. See also the amount of carbs that you eat.

I think magnesium chloride can be hard on the kidneys? I usually see Magnesium glycinate being recommended.

Kefir has done wonders for my sleep, especially the quality of sleep. I’ve been dreaming much more vividly after drinking a glass before bed. That’s not the only thing of course but I feel like in general healing your gut helps you sleep more soundly

GABA!!! After years of bad sleep quality I discovered it recently and supplementing it makes wonders. I'm pretty sure I had a neurotransmitter imbalance in my brain due to chronic stress (like I guess a lot of other people, too)

Interesting, although most will say you can only survive 3 days without water the world record seems to be 18 days versus 11 days (again world record) without sleep. I don't know about average numbers though. You can certainly feel side effects of a 24h sleep deprivation, I have no idea how it would compare to a day without water (starting hydrated). both seems quite dangerous that's for sure ^^

Unfortunately, my dad, when he was alive, had a lot of health problems, so I know what it’s like to interact with medical staff, be at hospitals, emergency rooms, doctors offices, year after year. They all look like they’re dragging themselves around forcing themselves to be there. That affects the quality of care and I’ve witnessed it for myself. I had an opportunity to become a nurse years ago. I passed several tests, so it would mostly be paid for. Emotionally, I couldn’t put myself in that environment. It’s also very political and there’s some corruption too. Getting to know your story, reassures me that I made the right decision. Medicine is important, but the system is not paying attention to the warning signals. When I first heard about you, I think it was on Thomas DeLauer’s channel, I had no idea about your background. The conversation was kind of on the hyper side, and I may have even tuned out. I didn’t realize, how knowledgeable you are although, I don’t agree with some of your perspective of evolution and the basis for a particular diet but whole foods and the chemicals within foods are important to know about, along with an individuals genetic make up. So anyway, I made the right decision.

I do not smoke, nor do I drink, coffee or tea or sodas. I am just a natural hyper insomniac! I certainly hope it’s true that not everyone needs eight hours of sleep because I doubt if I get that in a couple of days - maybe three days. I’m doing fine though and I love your videos. Blessings.

Dr. Paul, you mentioned essential oils in candles. I’m interested in your opinions on using essential oils aromatically, topically, and/or internally. I use a high quality lavender for relaxing and sleep and a citrus possibly mixed with earthy blends during the day to give me a perk. My son swears that putting a drop or two of wild orange e.o. in his palm and inhaling works as well as a cup of coffee to help him work through the afternoon slump.

I suffer from insomnia due to years of prednisone. I have spent the last year on and off trying to fix that but most of the time I take delta 8 to sleep. I have a 3 year old and having lots of days with no sleep makes me short and not an attentive mother. It’s a hard balance.

Dr. Saladino, what are your thoughts around mega dosing Fish Oils as a supplements for insomnia? I saw a recent video from Thomas DeLauer about keto and insomnia. He speaks to two directions on insomnia depending the culprits: a) stress or b) tryptophan equation (less serotonin and Melatonin). He states to start with tryptophan supplement and if it doesn't solve the problem, then either mega dosing Fish oil. Would love your thoughts on this? 115,771 views Jan 20, 2020

Almost recovered but you are saying that i dont have to worry about my deep sleep? Rem sleep more important? My sleep: Almost 2 hours rem sleep 1.2 hours deep sleep 4 hours light sleep So i sleep like 7 hours a night. Feel like i need more tho but i just cant. I do all the sleep hygienes and shit. Any advice anyone? Or opinions
