I had 3 young grandsons come live with me one evening almost 5 years ago. Everything of mine had to be shoved aside while we created space and beds in one evening. I now have many pairs of school uniform pants to hem. I purchased a couple of sewing machines and sewing supplies. I looked around, and the clutter is so bad I had nowhere to sew. I looked out the window at the camping trailer that was sitting idle, and voila I have a sewing room. It's the one space that is clutter free.

Yes! I am overwhelmed by my scraps. I save everything thinking I might use it and then when I try to look for a scrap instead of pulling a new sheet of paper, I can' t find what I'm looking for. My scrap piles are literally from the Cricut mat to the pile. When I try to cut off the small pieces, I can't decide what is too small to save. The binder and page protectors idea feels overwhelming because I could potentially have a binder for each color (shades of pink, shades of blue, etc). I know there are other people who have been crafting for years. What do you do with scraps!

I would love a video of when your craft space also serves another purpose. Such as a bedroom. I do mixed media projects so there's cardboard, card stock, fabric, metal fittings, wooden things, miniature stuff, polymer clay, ribbons, tools, I want it to be easy to access but also aesthetically pleasing. Each project demands the use of various materials. I'm single, so I went to a twin bed that I fashioned into a daybed look-- but even THAT takes up more room than is ideal. I love your videos and your delivery s relaxing and the tips are really helpful.

Hi there! I'm in UK and we have smaller rooms on average to US, no basements! I used our smallest bedroom and a large IKEA unit, and I painted an old dresser. I make cards, and sew/embroider/ quilt so I am constantly tidying my space. Cards on one side, in the dresser and boxes stacked beside it, and sewing on the other. I like visual too, so I hang my rulers and have pretty little shelves for jars of threads and various things. I teach my 3 granddaughters to sew too, so I have to decide what craft goes on my IKEA craft table...And tidy away when finished. It's fun, I love just sitting there sometimes. I love Pinterest too, and get ideas. Paper and cards stock is hard for me as I prefer fabrics on display and need tools, books, ribbons and buttons all stored for easy grabbing. Those big rooms are my dream! Thanks for your tips, Elizabeth

Hey Noreen (I hope I spelled it correctly). Just happened upon this video and it was the thumbnail that caught my attention. I am an elderly crafter who is challenged with physical issues. My craft room has gotten out of control to the point where it is taking away from my creativity, and that makes me so sad because for me, I am basically homebound and crafting is my only therapeutic relief. In fact, I have already been 'feeling' the effects of not crafting. Because of my physical issues, I do find that it doesn't take much for my room to get out of control; when I do craft, I do it in stages as I can't sit/stand for too long or fatigue hits me like a 'ton of bricks'. I've finally realized that I need to do something about this as I'm tired of wasting my valuable energy just to find something and/or things falling over every time I grab something. The old saying 'take it one day at a time' is so true for anything difficult that needs to be tackled and so I will remind myself of that when I begin my 'organizational journey'. Let's face it, if I look at the enormous organizational job ahead of me, I know it will overwhelm me and I won't start. By taking baby steps I will be more able to tackle it one category at a time and be more successful at getting organized. Thank you for all your advice. I would like to see more information on handling the scrap papers in the binder. If anyone else is interested, please 'thumbs up' this comment so that Noreen knows that there is interest in this topic. This blessed Nana of 8 would so appreciate it. Happy crafting everyone! PS: New subbie now, Noreen

Y’all are sounding like me! We have fibromyalgia, I never have energy to finish ANYTHING, the fibro-fog keeps from remembering what the hell I was working on! I have a nice big room, lots of shelves, a great futon for resting, and SUCH A FEAR THAT I VOMIT WHEN I GO IN AND SIT DOWN. I have projects in containers to keep all the parts together...paints, brushes, ephemera and canvas to work on a collage. Beads and tools, string and scissors to make a wind chime, many things to make terrariums with...y’all get the idea. I’m so depressed in my mind that I can’t imagine any goodness coming from that room or my hands. Sculpting is a no, also. Mosaics? Wow. So many tiny pieces...so many naps to take!! I would love to have a medication that would take away my pain, and somehow make me think that “you can do, young girl...go to the Light!” (You know. Something deep and meaningful like that.) But I’m loaded with enough crafts to make any craft ...decoupage, mosaics, crochet, I have a sewing machine, fully lined cabinets FULL of boxes...clay, stones, pens, paints, beads, findings, tools, and molds. I can do assemblages and miniatures, dioramas, paint...just everything! But I’m so terrified that it’s all just sitting in there! I’m sure that many of you would say ‘get over it!!’ But I’d really love some help! I spend so much time crying and moving my stuff around I don’t know what else to do!

@@pointyblackhat9045 Try to not loose faith in yourself hun!! Even Breathing is overwhelming at times, I know. Can you get a few boxes or totes of some kind? If totes temporarily label them. Decide on how much time you can spend towards organization a day. Whether it be 20 minutes or an hour. Don't stress at setting an exact time of day or how long. Except at least 10 minutes a day. Maybe perhaps after a nap! On your 1st day make space to set these containers of your choosing. Day 2, sit down in a comfortable chair or on the floor next to a pile. And just start putting the supplies in it's chosen container. Example, mixed media box, diorama box, etc. If one box gets full close it, stack the next 1 on top or put in it's place. Remembering to have a box for donate ready as well. If you can't see yourself using it, just put it in donate. Don't think on it to long or you will still have a room full of maybe I will use it someday supplies. Taking up valuable space. Once these boxes are full and your room is cluttered free. The next set of goals is to begin with your most favorite craft. Grab that box and you can begin to organize each boxed category 1 at a time. Again for example Mixed Media has become 1 of my favorite things to work on. The more I enjoy a specific craft the easier it was to organize each big box. If you skip a day, don't beat yourself up about it. Rest and try to get back to it if you can even its for a few minutes. It takes a bit of time. Be patient with yourself and remember it is possible to get back to crafting. Oh another key to organization is don't buy a bunch of organizing containers no matter how cute or how much you think you will use it. Until your going through each box, decide only than, to get containers that would suite your needs best and fit in your space. Otherwise if you buy a bunch of anything to just organize chances are it ends up in the donate box because it just doesn't work. Good Luck and be strong through your adventure to a clutter free craft room. Because you can do it, 1 day at a time. I hope this helps and makes sense! Sorry Clutter Fairy. I spend everyday with my friend of misery named Pain. And it took some time for me to organize my craft room. I never knew if I could get out of bed that day or not but I was determined. Because Like you Black Hat. Crafting is my only, therapeutic escape. Again Good Luck and Take Care!! You can do it!! 💖 💗💖💗

Great video! Very helpful! I know I need to gift some items. my problem is I have so different crafts that I love. For a few months I will be focused on beading/jewelry, then I will switch to knitting, then I will switch to sewing & sometimes I even switch to canvas & upholstery for boats. Almost 2 years ago I started baking & decorating cookies. Then a few months ago drum roll....wait for it....BAM. I bought my first cutting machine. Any way I really appreciate your great video & all the great comments from your viewers. I would definitely be interested in seeing the video about organizing the 12x12 scraps. Kind Regards, Pamela

Pamela, glad to know it's not just me. Even though I still work FT, my second job starts when I get home and I too do a little of everything and I sell my crafts at markets. But having so many different crafts, that means you also have a lot of different supplies. I use my kids old bedrooms but I still need help organizing. I try to put the likes together, but there is so much and I really don't have organizational skills. It can be very frustrating at times looking for things and yet I've managed to let the dysfunction work. I would like to one day get it together. De'

I agree, I must always be able to see my goodies. I have the 3 shelf Origami folding shelves with casters. I keep fabric in faux leather bins and some are folded, stored on the shelves neatly. Also, I keep one of my sewing machines on one of the shelves. Whenever I'm feeling crafty, I just roll the unit out of my small walk in closet. Storage space is hard to come by in a NYC studio apartment so this works out well for me.

I love storing my fabrics, paints, papers and little doodads in glass front China cabinets so I can see what I have (arranged by color and category). I store machines and things that don't inspire me behind the solid lower doors and drawers. If I need more visual storage, I replace the solid doors with plexiglass or wire front doors. They can often be easily (if crudely) constructed from firring strips and chicken wire or hardware cloth and reuse the original hinges.

I really enjoyed your video so much. Thank you for sharing. I recently emptied my messy craft room and removed everything out to my large living room which allowed me the space to separate everything and I did exactly what you said ... put like things together. Most of my storage containers are from the dollar tree, also. For larger bins, I went to WalMart and was able to find many different sizes for my larger items at a reasonable price. It does take time and the mess seems to get worse before it gets better, but it is so worth taking the time! With all of this organization there is no reason why my room should ever get messy again because everything has a place and I put everything back in its proper place when I'm done with it. Now my craft room is a calming, fun environment instead of a stressful one. :)

Great video, but after 3 yrs of working at Joann’s, exclusively in their paper craft section at Joann’s for 3 yrs, I know that standing your paper on its edge promotes bending and creasing, so it’s best to have it lay flat....

Thank you so much for all your great ideas on organization. I just love all your ideas and colors. And yes, I would love to see a good video on how to better arrange your scraps. I have a ton and can't seem to get a really good organization idea for it. I've watched many on here and I do have a system but it's getting out of hand again and need something that perhaps would work better. I love that you're so realistic about things. Thank you for sharing. You have such a sweet spirit. God bless you.

The Ikea bag holders are also great for holding wrapping paper rolls upright mounted on a wall in a closet. I also use 1 for cleaning / dusting rags. The other one they market for trash is great for folded bags - grocery, gift, etc. or inside a cabinet door to hold supplies.

I think as "makers," we tend to collect those things that spark our imagination. And, in fact, we probably appear to be hoarders by those who don't find the same joy in creating. I love all my stuff--thousands of bits and bobs that someone else might call junk. As with many makers, I find happiness in exploring many kinds of crafts, and therein lies the challenge of organization. But the truth is, if you can't find it, it's the same as not having it. For the past year I've worked to organize much in way you suggest--like with like. I continue to go vertical, though, as my floor space is limited. Thank you for your suggestions. There are dozens of sub-categories that could be researched for organizational tips such as vintage paper and ephemera, polymer clay, mixed media, etc. One of my issues is that I work with reclaimed / recycled materials, making it hard to categorize many things. I have a box labeled "parts," because I'm not even sure what they are other than being interesting in themselves.

I suggest you work on breaking down the categories; If it's tiles, have a bin with tiles. If you have wood, get a separate bin for wood. Separate all materials by what they are - because chances are those materials cross over from craft to craft (at least it does with me.) If you have several small amounts of things keep it in one 'miscellaneous' container... but keep each medium in a separate baggie or smaller box clearly labeled. Again my example as I have one large box and it has leather scraps, feathers, beads, wire, etc., but I don't have enough for them to have their own separate boxes... so I keep them in storage bags and then inside that miscellaneous Box. Does that help?

I'm with you Lori. I have beads and ornament ideas and sewing projects and flower arrangement ideas. My craft room looks like a junk room and it is very difficult to even work in. I'm going to challenge myself and tackle this mess. Wish me luck. LOL

I agree with the difficulty of organizing if you are a multi craft crafter. I see scrapbookers or stampers who have a ton of a single item and it looks so great. When you have all sorts of odds and ends....not so much. I'm working on organizing the basics but haven't got a handle on the "other" stuff. Time to get seriously creative.

Needed this! We just bought our forever home and I am so excited about having a craft room. It has been a "catch all" room since the move but we are almost to where I can be able to set it up. I cant wait! The drawer used to hang ribbon will be used. 😊👍

Thank you - I did find your KZitem interesting and helpful. My whole HOUSE is my storage room except for my two bathrooms, hehehe, so I'm desperate to find a way to sort through and de-clutter. LOVE your room - my favourite colours are aquas and turquoises so am now going to see what I can find. I really want my ink pads stored in a way that you showed in the "ideal" craftroom that we all want, so am going to try to find storage solutions for them. Love your ideas and am keen to start getting organised. Thank yo so much.

I’m julie, I’ve read over all the posts and can relate to so many of them, especially the health issues. I’ve tried to simply manage my craft room/sewing etc. With CoVid we are all forced into isolation. I stopped by a neighbor’s house while walking my dog. It was a rare thing to be out with my dog. Her entry way had a king size headboard & footboard that had been there for over a year. She explained about it and the other projects looming over them that never got done. I’m determined to help her regain some sanity. I have my own rooms of insanity and perhaps I can get someone to help, but we need to somehow help each other in each other’s homes. This is the fastest way to clear areas we are STUCK. My craft supplies have been a wide variety and if you have a crafty gene, yours is probably as well. Sometimes the hard decision needs to be made to eliminate specific crafts and only keep those that bring sheer joy. I love to sew and haven’t done it for many years. Sewing blesses my home in many ways. I finally gave up acrylic paint and spray paints and wood projects. I’m getting closer to my machine and those sewing projects I’ve hung onto. Help each other if you are able. Thanks.

Julie - I am so moved by this comment! YES! If you can help her.... please do!!!! The joy you will get out of that will also help inspire you in your spaces. I find every time I get to go out and help someone get control of their space again.... I come home and see things in my space with a new eye and a new motivation. 💜 Thank you so much for doing this. xoxox

Hi, I really like your very practical advice on de-cluttering... Most of the time when I am looking for organizing craft rooms tutorials, I always end up with videos of craft rooms that looks like a store to me, although they're very organized and looks luxurious craft room but its so unrealistic to me. Like you, I believe too that we don't need to buy a lot of extra luxurious storage systems to put in lots of unneeded craft supplies. We only keep what we will be using always. So thank you so much for this video that shows us just that. Looking forward for more videos of practical advice on de-cluttering stuffs....from your new subscriber

Thank you for the video, I'm currently trying to turn a spare bedroom into my craft room and feeling over whelmed. I do almost every kind of craft/hobby and have a lot to fit. Yarn/kniting, material/sewing, upcycling, painting, paper crafts. I feel like I need a room for each sub category but that is not the space I have to work with. You gave me a lot to think about. Step one planning.
