Is it possible the mixture caught fire or explode some how? I heard the smoke is toxic to inhale,is it seriously dangerous?

No way it will catch fire, it may explode if cold water added when mixture is hot, fumes are corrosive and dangerous. Regards

*I do not recommend oxidizing a knife. Although it looks nice after making it, it is not practical. Every scratch and scuff is visible. It is much better to polish the blade. Although scratches may also be visible, but definitely less. In addition, it is easier and simpler to remove them. Oxidizing does not protect against rust.*

FYI for anyone trying this…it is not very durable. I followed the vid’s instructions to the letter. I comes out beautiful…don’t sand it or even polish it because it comes right off.

I gt the exact same results with Muratic acid from the hardware store and I don't have to boil it. Just soak for 4 hours, rinse, wipe and oil. Two Feathers

I think it does have to be to activate the chemicals. Tho I'd be more concerned with proper disposal of potasium nitrate and caustic soda. Neurtalizing the ph in the latter, from what I've looked up

This came out great! I’ve been doing some tests on my own with some common household solutions and got some good results. You should give orange juice a try. It took a couple of hours but the result was a nice dark patina.

Yeah, just add some water from time to time to keep level of liquid the same. Important is to add water only to cold solution.

ACV is an acid and caustic soda is a base or alkaline solution - so not the same - plus the heat means better penetration, as far as I've heard.

Yeah I uss 650 NaOH and 325 KNO3 or 2/1 ratio of NaOH and KNO3 in 1 litre water.... I think if we use more potassium nitrate,we have darker oxidized layer....

I got them from construction supply store. Drain cleaners contain caustic soda too if you will have trouble finding it. Regards

Ferric chloride finish is easy to scratch, finish shown on video is longer lasting. Caustic soda aka Sodium hydroxide can be found in drain cleaners, Potassium nitrate You can find in stump removers. Regards

Mark level of liquid on the container and cover it to store, when u want to use it again look at previously marked level of liquid, if its lower then add water untill it reach the line and mix slightly. VERY important is to add water when its cool otherwise it will splash everywhere. Regards and be carefull!
