Now for the main event:
Thanks for bearing with me and my lack of vocal instruction while I recover from Covid.
This week we take a look at pet portraits. Specifically, a cat.
Do not feel intimidated by the aspect of trying to make something realistic like your pet. You will fid that it is much easier to wrap your head around it if you look at it from its fundamental properties: Shapes.
Start by using circles, squares, triangles, etc to just lay out your form.We are not looking for anything exact at this point. Just something that represents the form of your subject.
Once you have your form, start blocking in shapes for the shadows using the biggest brush that you can use for your task. The bigger brush will force you to keep your strokes loose and not allow you to get caught up in detail too early.
Start painting dark to light. If you try and put dark over light paint, you will end up raising the value of your darks and you will not have the results that you are looking for. So, save the whites and highlights to the end.
I put in a nice dark background with a very subtle value variation. This is to add some start contrast to the subject. The dark also helps to exaggerate the illumination of the subject. You need the dark to show the light.
For the whiskers, I scratched in some of the finer ones first and then used some diluted titanium white and a rigger brush to accentuate some of them.
I will post the final image to my instagram once I get it glazed to push the shadow a little. Go check it out and follow me there for my final versions.
I hope you enjoyed this. The holidays are coming and pet portraits make great gifts!
I'll see you next time.
