I actually came across this video because I'm painting a foggy landscape in acrylic paint, and I was looking for techniques others have used. I saw this pastel drawing (painting?) on Google Images and LOVED the colors. It captures a subtle brightness against gloom that I've always had trouble capturing. I followed the link to your blog about it, and then from there to this video. Excellent work! I've hardly ever messed with chalk pastels, but now I'm actually tempted to give them a shot.

I love the feel of this painting. There was so much to learn from it, for me: use of colour; shouty marks; and the scratching technique! Thank you so much for your generosity in sharing them 🙏🏻

Absolutely beautiful. From one teacher to another, I'd never spray fixative in an enclosed space. It's absolutely toxic.

I have no idea how you do what you do. You’re a magician. You work, and I follow you. I see the marks you make, and they look like marks. Then, without me having blinked, the marks go away and all I see is, texture, light, weight and weather. HOW? No, really, HOW?!!!!!!!!

Why doesn’t your fixative eat the white pastel? I have had trouble with workable fixatives…even Blair. Your instructions are clear and informative. Your work is bright and beautiful.

Thanks! I am not sure. I have not had this problem with fixative. I do wait for it to be competed dry before adding more pastel.

Do you know how many times workable fixative can be used on a painting? Does the paper get affected after being sprayed with workable fixative, if sprayed 4-5 times for example? (Daniel)
@KarenMargulis

It depends on the type of paper. I have had unsanded paper start to buckle with multiple layers of fixative. Sanded papers tend to do just fine with multiple layers. I have not ever counted but I never had a problem with light layers of workable fixative.
