Thank YOU Ginger!!! This technique is just what I needed to know! It's so counter-intuitive to use the brush that way, but it produces the exact effect that I wanted/needed ... I wish they had taught that (& so many other techniques) in my university art classes (grrrr). What a blessing youtube is!

OMG Ginger, Despite the fact that this video is from 10 years ago I must tell you how much I love, love, love both of these backgrounds. And hopefully you will actually receive this message. I am retired, and finally eliminating other things that have created a super-busy, but unfulfilling lifestyle. I am getting back into art and dedicating more time to it. Although I am self-taught, and have actually managed to sell a few things, I have ALWAYS been stumped with regard to good backgrounds. I have managed to be extremely dissatisfied with many that I have attempted. I cannot wait to try this, and practice with different colors. I am so interested in seeintg what colors will go together well, and that actually enhance subject matter. Thank you so much for sharing this. I'm off to practicing right now, and am simply giddy!!

I am happy that other artist find this useful. When I started painting with acrylics in the mid 1960s it was a journey of discovery as acrylics were such a new medium. My goal was always to get oil painting effects with acrylics, which I discovered was possible but needed to be approached differently than the way oils are used. What makes acrylic paint for me to be so terrific is that they dry fast which is what oil painters hate about them,

If you are doing portraits google old portrait paintings of the past. you will want to use those as a guide to what colors work well as background colors. As an example a color for a young child would be more pastel than a darker color for an adult.

I love this because I suppose it's kind of an "oil--painters" looking background and I'm just starting in Acrylic even though all my inspirations and influencers are oil painters.. and there seems to be a lot of tutorials out there on oil, but less so for Acrylic which is sad because I feel acrylic has been cast aside as a sort of "not-as-capable-medium" which is unfortunate and probably untrue. So thank you for this. It looks just as good as an oil :D and would be amazing for portraits which one day I am eager to paint!
