Great tips for DIY homeowners. As a professional painter I can cut a straight line left and right handed. Taping for me is a waste of time. For baseboards on carpet, wood, vinyl, etc I use 12" drywall mud knive as a shield. Brush not too wet. The only thing I tape off is door hinges/plates. Now, for my big secret. For top of baseboads, sinks, door frames etc. Run a thin bead of matching caulk at seam and wipe with a sponge. Time is money on a firm bid.

I use the aluminum blades from an old fashioned venetian blinds, put the blue tape on the blind strip and push under the baseboard, paint, remove after 10 minutes and reuse. The old fashioned aluminum blinds that have wide blades are hard to find, so the next time someone is renovating and you see that they have thrown them away, pick up and add them to your painting kit

I did this at my old house with my vinyl flooring downstairs and carpet upstairs. Except instead of tape, it was plastic drop cloth. Covered the entire floor with it and then put canvas drop cloth over it. Now this wasn't an excuse to be messy, but definitely protected the floor. Areas that I did get messy, I wiped away the paint so when I removed everything, it wouldn't tear. Unfortunately at my new house, carpet does not go under baseboard cuz they carpeted over wood floors.. baseboard is original...so I use a trim protector , go straight down along baseboard and push back carpet, holding that with one hand and painting with the other. Then I wipe off the tool between each pass. I try to avoid using painters tape as much as I can, but this waymay be easier.

As a painting contractor I paint all my trim first. We mask the whole house, prep/spray trim. Mask trim, spray and backroll walls. Then mask walls to paint ceilings. As for carpet, we roll the tape under the base as best as possible just by pushing down with a 2 or 3 fingers pushing down semi hard.

I take a putty knife to push down the carpet around the trim a little and to use as a shield and then just cut in free hand with either a brush or even an edger with wheels works and just ride it along with the putty knife. That works really well and is really fast and clean. Just doesn't work with thicker, nylon carpets in which case it's best to use carpet shields that you can get at any big box store. It takes too much extra time to tape and you still get bleed through if you're not careful.

If I may suggest a similar tip- when I'm installing baseboard over vinyl or wood floors, I place a #4 finish nail on floor and then push new baseboard onto the nail. It leaves such a tiny gap that it isn't noticeable to the eye, but the gap is great later "on down the road" when it's time to paint baseboard. A newspaper or thin dropcloth fits right under to protect floor.

Something similar I would like to know if possible. 10 years ago I repainted some rooms and when it came to door frames and architraves, I tried the tape method to define and delineate edges between the two. Apart from the bleed under the tape, which maybe due to the type I used, the main problem I couldn't resolve was after painting over the tape along the wall up to the edge of the architrave and then removing it. Do it too late and the paint has skinned and semi dried so pulling it off you run the risk of tearing out chunks and sections of the paint on the architrave. That also applies the other way around. Do it too soon when the paint isn't sufficiently dry has other problems. I didn't know how to get around those problems with tape and my ultimate solution was to either get a very good small brush and _very_ carefully paint the lines running along the other piece, whether it was the architrave or the wall. Another, was to get a stiff piece of metal, flashing or some other thin yet stiff flat piece, even a square trowel that you can press into the corner, paint, then move along and repeat. Reusable and easily cleaned. But it is labor intensive and I would rather use tape which I can just peel and throw away when finished. Any thoughts with the 'when to pull off' dilemma?
@justinparkman3585
2 жыл бұрын
You paint the woodwork last do the walls first then use a very low tac tape on the walls up to the Architrave then run a small thin Cork on the tape where its up against the Architrave thats yiir seal to stop it leaking under the tape .leave the Cork to dry 30 mins then paint your Architrave then peel of your tape after 30 mins don't leave the tape on too long then repeat again for the next coat .
@tomstamford6837
2 жыл бұрын
@@justinparkman3585 Thanks for that. I must give that a try. I think that was part of my problem, that while I thought it wasn't, I did leave the tape on too long until the paint dried entirely and, naturally, the dried paint that was on the tape would pull up part of the paint. cheers

@@TheFunnyCarpenter only once I've had to actually create that lip, but we're talking maybe a 2mm lip of tape on the trim (very tight carpet). I do implore folks to change their trim, especially in bathrooms, because of mold factor, pending length that trim has been on. Yesterday is a great example, they wanted the same trim used, so that means removing the irritating silicone on overblown bathroom trim ( 3 bathrooms I'm doing currently in one home) and after I spent the time just on cleaning the 1st bathroom, I went and bought all new baseboard trim, at less cost to cut and install, instead of cleaning the moldy old stuff. Love my job, but folks...saving money truly is harder on us, and in the end it's your pocketbook. Another huge point is make sure that installer has good experience, because I redo a lot of horrible quick uncaring applications. Some guy bradnailed a cold water line, and it slowly leaked for 15yrs...till I pulled that baseboard, then it was a scramble from hell to find water shutoff. Needless to say, the 4 inch square patch wasn't a hard think. Watch where you're placing your brads. I started these gigs at 17, I'm very close to 50 now. Want me to start on proper caulking! I know The Funny Carpenter has a great video on this, but I'll make it once more... # 1- Small tip cut! # 2- Clean edge # 3- Wet cloth # 4- SMALL 6" SLIDES....less travel up the wall line. Watched a guy 2 weeks ago, after I asked him if he knew how to caulk....yup he said... In the first 4ft from the bottom of door trim, along baseboard, his caulking built up almost 3/4" along the wall. I screamed STOP... Ran to my truck, grabbed my tubes, rags and dap❤️🇨🇦🍻...and returned, and started a new fresh line from the other end of that baseboard, and layed a bead about 1/8-1/16" and made sure he watched. He did the rest of one wall, and now my job...I'm the foreman lmao. Cheers🍻🍻 To doing it right!! Always run a sharp blade on the bottom, right under the bottom of baseboard, and kinda cut tape downwards
