I tried this and I'm so proud of the result!! I love that you do such a detailed running commentary on what you're doing, I think a lot of proficient artists forget that things like soaking up excess paint with your brush aren't obvious to beginners like me. You're a born teacher, and your cheeriness is infectious!

I'm a young architectural illustrator and as someone who was never formally taught clouds, this will help my skyline paintings immensely! (I also loved your commentary, so don't quit that!) I followed step by step and after one practice round was able to incorporate it into my current piece: the UT tower in Austin against a beautiful sky! Thanks!!!!

As long as you had fun, that's the most important thing. Maybe you got a couple of complimentary colors mixed together and wound up with a little "mud." You'll learn after a while. Remember to not dip one color into another unless you're intentionally making a new color out of others. It's all just a learning process.

I was trying a watercolor technique on a card for the very first time yesterday. I used three colors of re-inkers (Stampin' Up) and when I was done, I was so excited about how well it turned out that I ran down to the store and bought some watercolor paints! Thanks for all the encouragement with watercoloring! I was using the ink over a black embossed tree and it was so fun to see the small design develop with the inks! Question: Should you always completely wet your surface before applying any color?

Thank you, thank you, thank you.....I could watch you all day long. You are so enjoyable and a great teacher. What was the mix you used for the gray....ultra marine blue for the top of the sky and then you touched your brush into perhaps a sienna brown? you also mentioned that if the paper being used was heavier weight - I use 140 cold press, that it wasn't necessary to always wet and stretch prior? I find I tend to not know how much stretching I should do and I leave the imprints of my fingers along the edges.....too much stretch??? It doesn't seem to help NOT make the paper wavey when doing a wash for the sky etc.

Hi, great tutorial, thanks. I tried it (my first watercolor). When you made the grey I didn't see you show how? I researched it and it seemed, blue, red, and yellow, but mine came out brownish. Also, my 90lb paper was stretched (I didn't do a wonderful job) but still buckled, should I leave it taped so that it will flatten, or is that not going to happen? Love you videos, thanks.

I've watched a few of your video's and as an aspiring watercolourist I coulden't be more greatful! If I could ask a few questions, maybe where you got the watercolor case? And I believe I heard you say you put in tube paint, and let it dry into a sort of pan? Is there anything special to doing that? Or just squeeze the paint in, and wait till it's solid? Thank you so much! Also! I just noticed you had a brush just like mine in your pan case! Same color and everything from R&L! I can't do any of my painting without it, it was the first brush I actually attempted to paint with a few years back, and it's just a wonderful detail brush that can do so much. How do you get the bristles to stay clean though? Originally they were white just like yours, but they seem to change color depending on what I last used. I mean they feel clean as in no more paint is on them, and nothing happens when I put them in clear water, but when I scrub a little into my yellow it leaves a muddy tone in it, indicating it really does retain some color.
@thefrugalcrafter
9 жыл бұрын
AntiFormKeyblade try Master's Brush Cleaner, it will get the paint out. Some colors stain but they should not deposit color on another pan. I just squeeze the paint in and let it dry, nothing fancy;) I get my palettes at Blick or Cheap joes, some I have had a while and they may not still have them but they have many options:)
@02lensman

AntiFormKeyblade you answered your own question :-) Just put the paint into a section of your palette and let it dry. Then just reactivate it with clear water when you are ready to paint.

@thefrugalcrafter

it depends on what you are painting, I usually do wet-in-wet backgrounds to avoid hard lines but there is no hard and fast rule. Wet paper=blending and solt edges and dry paper =scrisp edges and lines. experiment;)

My 1st several attempts at clouds resulted in pilling - as a beginner I didn't know that everything labelled 'watercolour pad' at my local craft stores was cellulose paper & not cotton. As a result I have many paper pads I still need to use up, so I've been practising lifting with different things to see what pills least on cellulose paper - my favourite so far is those round, dry cotton disks for removing make-up. They're absorbent, v gentle on the paper & super-cheap & they'll help me progress thru my pile of "watercolour pads". (I've also treated myself to a tiny Arches cotton pad from the city art store, to treat myself occasionally).

Hi Lindsay, I'm a beginner in water colour painting and I can't describe how much I love water colour in words. I really like your videos as they are easy to follow and great for beginners like me!!! I have some questions for you, I'm currently using Daler Rowney travel kit with a mix of Pental (Japanese brand) water colours in tube and using Sakura Koi water brush... Will that be good enough for most paintings? As good brushes are pretty expensive to get... Also do you have any recommendations for water colour pads? I'm using Daler Rowney water colour pad, 140lb, as it was the cheapest pad I could get at the art store in my country.
@thefrugalcrafter
9 жыл бұрын
LaConfessional start with that and see what you think, it should be sufficient:) Canson, Strathmore and Fabriano all make less expensive paper too but use up what you have first. The paint will be fine on all papers:)

Beautiful tutorial and clouds. No one else remarked that they get nervous when they see clouds like that. To me they look like the kind of clouds that mean turbulent winds are above them. In Tornado Alley that usually means trouble and I start checking the weather channel. I would have to do the horse tail ones--cirrus clouds, they are nice and safe.
