Great stuff as always from CoP. Concise and full of helpful information. I really appreciate theses short, but start to finish models. It's a good reminder of all the small things I may be forgetting, in this case it was your use of pin washing. I'm well aware of pin washing, I've seen your video on it multiple times, but seeing it here again triggers and "Ah right!" moment for me.

I really loved the vid a learned a great deal, but have one hopefully useful critique. When painting your marine hes a little low on camera, which is fine, but the graphics that pop up obscure him and your paint strokes on occassions. Maybe you could place them top left... Just a thought.. I will certainly use a few of these techniques on my stormcast as my kids much prefer aos lol

Great tutorial as always! I bought some W&N Oils/Sansodor after your pinwashing video, how long does it normally take to dry? It's been 2 days and still slightly wet in recesses!
@cultofpaint
4 жыл бұрын
It depends how heavily you have washed it on. Typically if i was in a hurry I would wash it on, leave for maybe 30 mins and then use a hairdryer to evaporate thinner. If you have time then I leave it overnight and then hairdryer. The main problem you will run into is if you wish to paint over it with acrylics. You need it too be fully dry or ideally sealed with varnish.

@@cultofpaint two more quick things sorry! Would I still thin the airbrush GW paint or no? Also I cannot find anywhere to purchase the Sansodor thinner here in Canada... any good alternative that you can recommend?
@cultofpaint
3 жыл бұрын
You might need to thin the air paint. Depends how it sprays at the pressure you use. Sansodor is odourless mineral spirits, artist grade. You can use any mineral spirits. ( sometimes called enamel thinners, thinners etc from some Hobby brands). But all the major art supply brand will make their own version of an odourless thinner

I've been trying the technique of glossing and then pin washing with sansodor and W&N oil paint as per the guide, but am running into a couple of problems. On some parts of the model, the pin wash seems to bleed outside of the recess and slowly creep over flat panels. The other issue is that I seem to get tide marks, particularly if the recess is not sharp enough like the bit on the top of the SM's head. Please help - I'm clearly doing something wrong but can't figure it out!
@cultofpaint
3 жыл бұрын
You've answered your own question in a way. It's often caused by the recesses not actually being deep/lower than around them. You can try reducing the amount of wash you use, and also when dry apply a second one. You can clean the tide marks easily with a Q tip.

It doesn’t work quite as well as oil, but still usable. Take a look at this video we did on pin washing. ( a gloss surface makes it easier for paint to flow into the cracks) m.kzitem.info/news/bejne/km-em6ujrWqhgYo

If i didn't know anything about Night Lords, this would suffice. However, i know too much, and that armor is DEFINITELY not dark enough. Nice try, but the process is more complicated that it needed to be, and the result was way too bright to fit the subject material.

Keep in mind that this is under a painting lamp. In a game setting I'm sure it looks darker. Also, painting NL in only dark blue makes them look bad on the tabletop imo, you need brighter highlights or it looks flat and boring.
