I just boarded my shop up (or as my girl calls it, the "Garage") I put some in one way and rest flipped so I'll have a good comparison if I don't flip the rough sides hah. Good video man thanks for sharing

the side with rough surface faces out so when its used on roof you don't slide off roof years ago they didn't have that and people would slip and fall if it was a bit damp from dew or rain it was slippery and the lines make it easy to whack nails in to the studs with a nail gun fast without measuring using it on outside of house

Good video explanation for painting OSB. I just screwed the last board on the wall of my new detached 24x24 garage today! Glad it's done! Thinking about spraying or rolling it to make it brighter. Can't beat Kilz! 😎👍🏻

I'm a painting business owner. I'm fixin to paint some of this stuff and never had to go over any lettering like this. Could you not have used oil base primer so there is no bleed through? That's my plan. I wouldn't think it would bleed through after that but I guess we'll see. I would use oil primer anyway because of the wood yellowing
@MoreBear

I could have used an oil based primer however I had half a 5 gal pail of PVA on hand. Any primer would work. Thanks for the question and watching!

Omg! I had no idea that OSB had a smoother surface. My husband bought a home that was built by t/ previous owner who had, used OSB for all the walls… sadly, this guy used the “ rough “ side out &, I’m having hell repainting & filling all the gaps in it ( surface texture ). Not to mention removing old wallpaper border in all t/ rooms, without damaging the OSB in t/ process. 🤦🏼♀️

I'm here to learn about your roller experience as I plan to do the inside of my garage for the same reasons. Pegboard and wall mounting systems are expensive nonsense, weaker, and inflexible from a mounting perspective. It also adds greatly to the structural strength, and even more so if you mount it horizontally and stagger the seams. Wallboard IMO is dumber than a sack of hammers for a garage, but is required for attached garage walls that border the house for fire purposes and that is all. Wallboard dosages easily and can't handle moisture, and it's contribution to strength is small so you still need the sway braces. Its only redeeming value is it looks nice, like an inside walls of a house. I know what PVA is, it is Poly Vinyl Alcohol, but I don't know why it is in a primer because I used pure PVA as a mold release agent for fiberglass layups so the fiberglass wouldn't stick to the mold. It seems like it would be anathema to have anywhere near paint, but somehow it must be useful in that role. As far as which side goes where, Weyerhaeuser says, "There is no difference from structural standpoint and people use it both ways. The argument that could make for the rough side out, other than the nailing lines being on that side, is when working on a roof it gives you much better traction." From what I've read, which side is a religion for many. People use the argument that the shiny side handles the weather better. Weyerhaeuser didn't mention that. For a roof, aside from the traction thing, I would think the rough side might be a little better for gripping the underlayment before shingles too. I would think that for siding on an unfinished garage, it would put the finish side on the inside from an appearance and not attracting dirt. If it is going to used for the inside walls, then definitely forget the nailing lines and put the smooth side to the inside for the same reason plus it is the better side to varnish or paint. So if you leave the religion out of the equation, you can install it in whichever makes the most sense for your application.

I agree 100% about drywall in garages. OSB or Plywood gives more rigidity and you can mount shelves or hooks anywhere. Plywood would be a "nicer" finish, but very expensive. I am very pleased with the paint finish, and I would do to my shop and garage. Thanks for the comment and for watching!

Im just completing my OSB basement gym. I think OSB is a little bit of a nightmare. Your video should have shown subsequent coats. This is what i did. I first applied Zinnser white shellac to all printed markings on the osb. Guarantees no bleed through. Applied Kilz 2. Kilz pva is for dry wall. KILZ 2 is for wood. BUT after one coat - what looked like good white cover dried to almost clear - as if never painted. Second coat was better but you still saw all chip colour underneath. Also there was bleed through from would glue or something. Blotches here and there. Purchased more primer. This time an even better and more expensive primer. It in essence completed the job BUT still bleed through blotches. They will show through final coats IMHO. So im purchasing more white shellac to make sure its done right. Then final coats. Also. All little holes were evident until i figured out that instead of rolling straight up and down i would swirl the roller so the roller was actually going sideways. That pushed paint into the holes. Then i would roll up and down. But a lot of swirling was required. If i were to do again i would use zinnser white shellac as an exclusive primer. Very expensive BUT for my project for initial shellac cover plus 3 coats of primer to cover properly i spent $160. White shellac for max 2 coats (although one coat might do) would have cost me $280 - not quite double. But would save labour and would be bullet proof. But certainly eats into to the savings using OSB. So, painting OSB is a B. A big B.

OSB is not as good as plywood (or smooth) but at half the cost, I was willing to use it. It's in my shop and shelves cover most of it. The PVA worked like a charm! No bleed through. Check out my follow up video that shows the results. Don't waste your time with other primers or epoxy. Follow my directions and you WON'T be disappointed. Thanks for the comment and for watching!
