This video showed me how painting walls and trim is also art because it takes creativity and good technique to produce good results. I'm not sure I could survive all the dancing that seems to be required while paint is drying....

Hi Tony, We could have a long conversation about what “art” is! I chose these particular colors for the back hallway partly because it is a small space, and partly because there will be some very colorful elements added shortly. I wanted the walls to be neutral to provide a resting place for the eye. In other areas of the house, I’ll be exploring bold hues, patterns, and images, using techniques that are decidedly more art-like. I hope you’ll stay tuned. Thanks for being one of my long-standing Patrons. I really appreciate your support! Nancy (P.S. I like to keep a pogo stick handy for the rare occasions when I tire of dancing.)

If your using paint with a glossy sheen, like eg shell or anything more glossy, then in would be best to try to roll the wall while the cut ins are wet so that the sheen looks similar

How the hell do you paint so precisely.. I am the worst
@NancyGamon
2 жыл бұрын
Haha! It kind of looks like magic, doesn't it? Using an angled brush is a big help. Also, I try to not have too much paint on the brush, so that there aren't gloopy drips. I paint a few strokes in the center of the trim to get off the excess paint and then gradually move towards the outer edge of the trim, where I want things to be clean and crisp. Since there isn't as much paint on the brush at that point, it's much easier to get a precise line. Hope that helps! Nancy

I definitely would have put some kind of tape down on the floor next to the trim unless you plan on getting paint on that and painting the floor. Also the room I'm going to be painting doesn't have any base molding at the moment so I can paint it and then install it. Not everybody has painting skills like you and I have seen the nightmare of people not using painter's tape near trim and getting paint on the wall next to the trim Etc. It is advisable to use paint tape especially if a person is just a novice. Not everyone is going to be as neat and tidy as you.
@NancyGamon
3 жыл бұрын
Hi ByGraceIGo, You're right - I definitely got lucky with these floors. I was able to skip the painter's tape because it was so easy to wipe up the occasional error with a damp cloth. I used to have trouble with paint going everywhere until I learned the trick of using an angled brush. It makes it sooo much easier to create smooth lines with fewer mistakes. When I'm painting near an edge, I also try to have very little paint on the brush, and that helps keep things tidy, too. That's awesome that you'll be able to paint your trim before installing it. You'll have such a nice neat finish! I hope you enjoy your new space. :) Nancy

I like your video. I see you didn’t primed nor sanded the trim. Why is that? And what paint from SW did you use?
@NancyGamon
3 жыл бұрын
That's a really great point that some trim may need a little attention with wood filler and/or sandpaper before painting. This trim was new(ish) and just didn't have the kind of noticeable dings or rough areas that warranted pre-treatment. I didn't prime my trim because... it didn't even occur to me! The Sherwin-Williams colors I used were Iron Ore (for the trim) and Repose Gray (for the walls). Thanks for watching! Nancy

Hi, question did you have to sand your trim before start painting it?
@NancyGamon
Жыл бұрын
Hi Cathleen, that's a great question. If the trim is rough, cracked, dented or split, you may want to make use of some wood filler and give it a sanding. If you're painting the trim a light color, laying down that first coat of paint will quickly illuminate areas that need touching up! If you're painting the trim a dark color, the situation may be more forgiving visually. Nancy

@@NancyGamon Looks like it saves touch up as the paint tends to drip or drop down.
@NancyGamon
3 жыл бұрын
It does seem like that would be the case. What I've found is that it's much easier to neatly wipe off wall paint that has dripped down onto the baseboard, than it is to neatly wipe off trim paint that has accidentally gotten onto the walls.
@xxvodanhxx
3 жыл бұрын
@@NancyGamon It's a lot easier to get paint dripping for novice painters from the wall due to the volume of paint they're putting on vs the trim. However, I kind of agree with you on this one that its easier to touch up trim, no one is on the floor looking at it that closely, but trying to touch up the wall is harder because its easy to accidently touch the top of the trim, whereas most trip will have a curve at the top and farther away from the wall and much less chance to accidently touch wall when touching up trim. Trim first it is then. I have base board, crown molding, and chair guard trim to do now!
