tysm for posting this! finals has been super hectic and i barely had to time to make my friends and family Christmas gifts. one of my projects for my friends completely went wrong and i'd been working on it for two weeks! I have to get my gifts done before Christmas break starts! I was feeling really discouraged, when i thought of another gift idea i'd had awhile ago. bleach painting a shirt. I mostly work with graphite or watercolor. with that said, im extremely use d to with working light to dark so i was intimidated by how bleach painting seems to work in reverse. I appreciated how calming and welcoming your approach was to teaching us how to use the medium. I feel way more confident in my self and more motivated to take it slow and to do the best I can! I hope to start on it tomorrow after school. tysm again!

@TheHollyDaisy

hi there! I don’t bother with washing before unless it feels dirty. Also, painting on dry fabric will leave you with a crisper image. Once the fabric is wet the bleach disperses for a different look that is more similar to water color.

Do these designs like fade out over time or is it fully permanent ? Sorry if this is a dumb question
@TheHollyDaisy
Жыл бұрын
No dumb questions ever! They won’t fade because you are permanently removing the dye from the fabric - however the corrosive process of bleach can cause fabric to decay more quickly over time (aka holes in your fabric). Which is why you want to avoid thin fabrics and wash the garment when you’re finished. I hope this made sense and helps!

I'm kinda confused with the bleaching process, like how do you prevent your clothes from getting holes? From looking stuff up online people said to spray hydrogen peroxide and others said to just paint for 2 hours and immediately wash the clothes. But what if I wanna work on the whole thing the same day? 🤧 Do I just keep spraying it with hydrogen peroxide every two hours if I'm still working on it?
@TheHollyDaisy
Жыл бұрын
Hmm thank you for the question! I have spent 10 hours with projects and only washed them on quick wash, didn’t add hydrogen peroxide. That being said I make sure I’m working with thick fabrics or denim. If you’re needing to work with a thin article then I would follow those guidelines of 2 hrs/ hydrogen peroxide. However if you’re choosing a solid fabric then I would work on it as long as you’d like just making sure not to leave it over night. I hope this helps

Because every garment is dyed differently, it makes it a little harder to predict how it will bleach. For example, I have had brown garments that bleach bright purple, pink, orange, beige etc.

@TheHollyDaisy

Bleach = corrosion and what is happening is that it breaks down the original dye, so technically adding any bleach is damaging it. You can help by 1. Using thick quality fabric 2. Not leaving the bleach on overnight 3. Spraying it with hydrogen peroxide before you throw it into the wash (it will foam up because it is breaking bleach down into salt water) Good luck!

Wash it alone on short cycle and you’re good to go forever - if you feel extra anxious just squirt some hydrogen peroxide on top of your design before you throw it into the wash. It will fizz and bubble but your design will be ok!! This is just the process of bleach and hydrogen peroxide converting into salt water which won’t corrode the fabric

how would i go about like neutralizing the bleach or stopping it from eating holes in the fabric without a washing machine? also, if i were to use thin fabrics, would i have to neutralize the bleach in between certain timespans?

Hmm, you can soak it in cold water! That should do it. You can also add a small amount of hydrogen peroxide to the mix. Also, it really depends on the thin fabric. Bleach painting can be such a mystery box. I really would try to avoid leaving the bleach on longer than two hours with thin fabric. You could work it in shifts over time and that could help. Ultimately everything in life is breaking down, so eventually no matter what you do with thin fabric it may get holes in the next couple years. I hope this helps!
