This video teaches you how to fix a very common problem: large holes in your walls. Taerra Chiba, owner of The Practical Diva, takes you step-by-step through this DIY project, using a hole behind a door as an example. Wall repair isn’t difficult for homeowners to do themselves.
Here are the steps:
1. Clean the edges of the hole with a putty knife. By the time you’re done, you don’t want any flakes coming off the damaged area.
2. Grab a mesh self-adhesive drywall patch and remove the backing. Put it in place ensuring the edges of the patch cover the drywall hole.
3. Apply spackle. A professional would use drywall mud, also known as joint compound or drywall compound. But many of us already have spackle, which works well. A drywall patch kit will also contain everything you need. Make your layer of joint compound bigger than your repair patch. It will look like the surface of the drywall is flat. Let the drywall compound dry.
4. After your spackle dries, sand it down with sandpaper or a sanding sponge. Many wear a dust mask during this part of the process. Once it’s nice and smooth, you’re ready to paint the patched area.
That’s all it takes to complete your drywall repair. This will work on anything from nail holes to larger holes. If you don’t want to DIY this home improvement project, a handyperson can easily patch drywall for you. Repairing damaged drywall will save you money on your security deposit when you decide to move out. The cost is approximately $225 for a handful of small holes or one large dent.
