bar placement is very important. I've learned to bring my shoulder blades together and rest the bar on the shelf formed by that meaty muscle. Keeping as narrow a grip as possible insures the back stays tight and maintains that shelf as well. If the bar is touching bone I can tell you from experience you're gonna regret it down the road.

Nice to see you can use the copy and paste function. Yes, a study in 1978 found that shearing forces are increased by moving the knees in front of the toes. But only by 28%. However, the forward lean required by the upper body to prevent this puts the hips and therefore spine, at a more vulnerable position.

@Pegasus177

+simon jones it's a theory but doesn't really matter. it may be beneficial it may not make a difference. it's unknown. if you are starting out then keeping your head up can encourage you to keep your chest out. while if you had been keeping you head up for the past few weeks altering the form could put it off again.
@batia0121
8 жыл бұрын
+simon jones It is, I learnt it the hard way. I always fixated on "Keeping my chest up and head up" but if you look at your posture from the side, doing so will create huge amount of pressure focused on your lower back. I now have a *mild* lower back problem due to this, and my Physio doctor showed me the correct form which is actually keeping your chin tucked in and eyes 45 degree downwards, and you can see this posture helps you maintain a neutral spine which is the ultimate posture to protect your spine. Go ask a real doctor and dont blindly follow these youtube meatheads, your spine is something you really shouldbt be messing with.

@blahplayhard4092

I don't think so. Make sure your chest is up (and tight). So your lower back should feel a bit "concave". If you don't maintain a firm torso and spine then you may have been leaning forward a bit, causing stress to your lower spine/back. Fix that before you increase weight.
@sebastian31337

As a result olympic weightlifting training evolves around keeping the trunk (torso) as vertical as possible, to initiate this movement, you break at the knees. This allows you to arrive at the desired position for the "catch phase of the clean and snatch", with knees slightly overlapped. It's not just about squatting (as most numpties believe) but there's also getting the weight above your head.

I was under the impression that your knees may never surpass your toes during a squat. Any thoughts on that?

I never go past my toes. A little trick I use is to place one barbell on the squat rack to the point my knees can't go past that point. If I bump the bar, I know my knees are going to far...it's helped me. Another thing that helps is to imagine a fixed plane that runs vertical in line with your knees. Emphasize mentally, to sit back....with no movement of your knees going further. If you notice when you sit back towards a chair...your knees are no where close to being on your toes. This approach has allowed me no pain in my knees...and a killer burn with all muscles in the legs with quads, hams, and calves. Hope this helps.

Would you kindly do some research on the topic before you blow your knees out.

I agree with Bryan. You'll also likely find that if your knees are over your toes your torso may be too far forward with too much of your weight on the front of your feet. This may sound a little strange but in addition to what Bryan said, something you'll find that will help keep you upright is to ensure your elbows are pointing straight to the ground. It actually helps you to sit back in the exercise a bit. You'll see most people with their arms at a 45 degree angle - the problem this may cause is you end up pushing forward as you move out of the bottom squat position making it harder to stay upright. Your shoulders and hips should move up and down at the same speed when you squat. If they're not then the form is off.

That's a myth. The reason it is advised against is because for MOST people, having the knees extend past the toes is coupled with the heels raising off the floor. I have long legs and flexible ankles, and my knees go beyond my toes with no pain.

+Zerpent I Instructor not really needed. Use lighter weights until you get the movement down, then work up. Technique is more important than weight when it comes to lifting.

+Zerpent I Just ask someone at the gym who is doing squats to help with your form. Save the money.

+Justin Loranger I really wouldn't want someone advice from someone doing them at the gym. At my gym most guys don't do squats, and the majority of those who try their ways with it have terrible form. Most of their shitty form is either poor RoM or squatting with almost no weight, due to using their toes instead of heels when pressing upwards.

Are squats supposed to hurt your knees or is it just me?
@HyperInvest210

My knees used to hurt particularly my left one when I squatted. I think it was because I wasn't warming up my legs and going straight to heavy squats. After about 2-3 months of not squatting at all, I started doing them again. Now I always do light & drop sets of leg extensions and hamstring curls to warm up my knees. And when I squat more than 225 lbs, I use a good-quality knee strap. I haven't had any problems since then but only the good kind of soreness. If that doesn't work, maybe u need to get them checked out by a doctor. Could be a partial torn or strained meniscus. Hope that helps.

From what i've learned by watching people such as Elliot Hulse, squats should not injure or cause pain in the knees. If anything, you could have a muscular imbalance. This could be due to improper squatting technique, or from other exercises. If the pain is rooted from performing squats with bad form, I would start by practicing the technique shown in the video, with just the bar. Then build your squat back up to build stronger knees. If the pain is being caused by something else I would see a professional.

Thanks for the suggestions everybody. I'll try to warm up before working out and see if that fixes it. Otherwise, I'll just ask a professional. Because now that I think of it, my knees have been causing me problems for quite some time. I can't even do air squats without pain.
