Some good tips. Depends on the smartphone you have. Zooming normally results in a less crisp image because it's interpolating the pixels.

It is best to take the photo and then crop, this way the photo captures all off the data, and then you remove what you don't need. It is best to not zoom when taking, crop when processing.

Yeah I usually prefer to take the picture close as possible while making sure I’m not casting any shadows over it and then cropping the image afterwards if necessary. It’s also a bit easier than trying to take a perfect picture o the first try

This is one of the best vids about this subject. - If you have one strong light source, probably you want it on the upper left, with the shadows going to the right and below. - you can play with the hight of the glass plate, it does not need to rest on the book. For instance you can use lego blocks to alter the hight.

Something I do for pages that don’t like to lie flat: use temporary adhesive. I’ve got a tape runner that’s just temporary and I run it between the page I want to take a picture of and the best one. Usually that’s enough to keep it flat - and if not, I just stick the next two pages together as well :D (you can just rub off the adhesive once you’re done ;) )
