I was given an Ayam Cemani Roo when I first got chickens last year. Gideon the handsome rooster, as I call him, is the best roostser ever. He takes such good care of his original six silver-laced wyandotte hens I got for him. Then I let a broody hen hatch five eggs. There were two roos out of that hatch. Zeke and Moses. Gideon has taken them under his supervision and is teaching them everything. They all crow together now. Gideon is in the process of teaching the two roos the mating dance. As they mature, if they go after a hen and just jump on her, he pushes them off and chases them away. If they do the dance and the hen lets them, Gideon the handsome rooster just stays calm. It is a remarkable thing. I love my roos. The youger ones are Cemani/Silver Laced Wyandotte, and SO beautiful. Just have to get them fully mature. We also brought home 12 new red hens to take stress off the old ladies. Love your videos.

When we had out little serama rooster (brody boy) i loved watching him with the girls 😊 when our brahma first started laying, brody would call all the girls to the coop so they could watch big mama lay her egg and i guess he was trying to show the younger girls how its suposed to be done. It was so incredibly sweet 🤗. He would also stand around watching over them while they would eat and i always would feel bad that he was missing out on the snacks so i would pick him up and give him his own snacks. He was the cutest thing!!! He also liked me rocking him to sleep 😂

He does bite me when he first sees me but I like to think its him saying "You've been away too long mom! Get me out & cuddle me!" Lol. Btw. I have 3 Roosters. My main Roo is Indiana Crows. Hes the dad to the 2 younger Roos 'Tom' &'Jerry' I let a hen go broody last year and she had 5eggs hatch but 3 died right after hatching & the 2 remaining chicks were Roosters (just my luck) lol. The 7 month old araucana cross rooster we have now is so sweet once you pick it up, but runs away like the wind before you catch it. Funny thing is that we've already had 2 other roosters this year that we rehomed - a silkie that didn't mate with anything and was super loud, and a brahma cross that was good breeder and cuddly to me but absolutely useless at protecting the flock and attacked my mum till she bled. The current rooster also attacked at my mum lol but at least this time didnt make contact and gash her. I don't know why but roosters hate her. And I have also yet to see the courtship dance, but perhaps I missed it - my hens never have any bald spots. I guess you win some you lose some

Great video. I love my rooster named Woody but I've had to find him a new home recently due to him being over aggressive with humans and his girls. One in particular. It saddens me but i think hes going to go to a good home. He constantly challenges me and i just cant risk some of my small ones getring hurt. Ive tried so many things with him but nothing seems to work. He is a bully and it ruined the peacefulness of my flock recently. Hes over a yr old and i raised him from a baby chick, so its disappointing. He definitely does this to my hens, they dont want to breed with him and theyre stressed, he just mounts them anyway, he started pulling feathers out and Its a nightmare. Thanks for the great info. Im raising new chicks I hatched and I'm going to try to pick a good one. . Thank you so much!

I had a beautiful Buff Orphington rooster that my kids loved because he would follow them and want to be held. They named him Butterscotch, and everyone just loved him. He was a favorite around the yard. He started aggressively mating with the hens and then about a week later he attacked me. Our German Shepherd, Heidi, was near by and she came to my rescue, handling the situation swiftly and efficiently. After that she was always near by and she gave him a hard time, keeping him occupied and out of my way so I could tend to the feeding, watering, cleaning, and egg collecting. We ended up sending him to another farm because the day he attacked me, he really hurt me.

He’s the most pathetic little thing and used to get bullied in my friend’s coop but I rescued him because he’s so funny to watch. He’s too short to mate and can’t even preen himself. To say the dance is genetics is ridiculous,it’s a learned behavior ,they’re instinct is to mate no matter what ,a rooster that feels threatened(either by hens or other roosters) will mount hen with no warning because if he dances other birds would interfere before he gets a chance ,confident, often solo birds will do the dance

Wow! Amazing video, thankyou…..a great revelation to me as I am on the look out for a rooster and this has been a great help. Is it unusual for a rooster to be non aggressive with humans and hens? I’ve had no luck at all.. I think it’s because I’ve raised them myself and I’ve had a close bond with all of them…..and I am thinking that because of that, the roosters will see me as a threat…. Is that right? Do I have to keep away from the hens so the rooster doesn’t see me as a threat? Do you know much about the speckled Sussex as I have been offered one close by…he’s pretty young and my Cornish cross hens are very large and are over 19 weeks old… Any advice would be much appreciated. 3 out of my 6 girls have open wounds where the Cornish cross roosters were mounting them so they probably need a break for atleast 2 months I think.

Hi Becky, I'm new to chickens and have a pair of RIR's about 8months old that have never been out of their chook yard. I would like to let them out like you do to graze but if I do then will they go back at night? I'm 71 and don't fancy the idea of chasing them around the yard. They are both very calm and I don't want to spoil that by chasing them. They are both the same age and she's backed out an egg every day since the 2nd of August. If they won't go back do you have any tips other than chasing them. Waiting for your advice. Douglas
